Whether you’re considering the purchase of a binocular or a spotting scope, you’ll want to know the optical device’s magnification. Magnification is a number indicating how much larger an object appears when viewing it through the optic versus the naked eye. Increased Magnification can affect the Stability. Watch this video to learn how!

We’re going to Big Bend in a couple of weeks ru-vid.comUgkxSt0aBrzyS1nxONvwm1e0u7ZDFD_eypAO so I bought these to use during the hikes, didn’t want to miss anything. As you can see by the photos I tested the phone adapter by taking a phone of a power pole on the next block and you can see the results. It took a couple of minutes to line the phone camera up to the eye piece, there’s a bit of a learning curve, but once it was longed up it stayed in place without any issues. So far I’m impressed with the feel and the weight, the neck strap is wide and soft so it feels good on my neck. I look forward to using it with my friend and grandson in Big Bend!

So if what I see with the naked eye through a piece of glass is measured at 5mm, then with 8x magnification, the diameter would be something like 40mm (4cm) ?

Good explanation. The explanation of image stability after 2:00 pretty well shows how it looks with image stabilisation, though. Slow movements are not a problem. The micro vibrations from the hands are much faster and above a certain magnification it's too much for the eyes to compensate.

This was an excellent video. Thank you! The one thing I would have liked to see is what the difference is between those binoculars of different sizes, and how that affects what you see when you look through them. Also, how does the second number, the diameter of the input light lens, affect what you see?

For those wondering why birders like a wide field of view when the bird is usually just in the center, one top reason is that birder's need to FIND the bird and a narrow field of view makes it hard to spot the bird. Just today I saw a bird on the end of the third branch of a tree about 100 feet away. I pulled my 7x binocular and had an easy time finding the third branch and then the end of the branch. Unfortunately, I could not make out the details of the bird. I pulled up my 10x binoculars to see more detail, but for about 30 seconds, I could not locate the bird. All I saw were little bits of tree branches and I had no idea exactly where the binoculars were pointing. The bird flew away before I could find it using the 10x pair. So, even though the 7x pair did not give me the detail I wanted, at least I saw the bird! I am looking to buy a new pair of binoculars, and this trade-off is challenging me. I just went online and saw the Dick's sporting goods has a model that is 10x50! It weighs more, but the 50mm objective lens is used to offer a wider field of view. On the other hand, and to my disappointment, the field of view is not as wide as one would expect for such a big lens. So, I am still not sure what to buy! :-b

You should have mentioned the angle of view - very important. It's the _third_ number (not mentioned in the video). One can have two 8x30 (say) binoculars, yet one will have a grand, _huge_ field of vision, like an IMAX screen, while the other will give the impression of tunnel vision. Unfortunately, these days the wide field of view is not something deemed important by most manufacturers, so for example binoculars with a 70 degrees apparent field of view (AFOV) are a rarity. Maybe that's why this was not mentioned in the video, binoculars with a wide AFOV are hard to find (easier to find in Japan, so search the Japanese Amazon and eBay).

The US, British, German, and Japanese Navies during WWII determined that on ships, lookouts scanning for ships on the horizon, could only view thru seven power binoculars even on the most stable of ships, because of their arms became fatigued very quickly. They chose 7x50 binoculars for the light gathering ability of the 50mm objectives. The Captains of German U-Boats were given 10x75 binoculars for target spotting at night on the surface with their elbows resting on the edge of the bridge. Advancements in design have made 8x42 extremely popular for birding, but for beginners, 6x40 may be a better choice until you become proficient at holding steady. HINT: Please don't get tiny "pocket size" binoculars! Hard to hold, hard to focus, hard to see thru.

My binoculars are 10 x 50 but when I turn the magnification wheel it doesn't seem to magnify. The focus wheel works great , though.
@bruzote
@bruzote 5 лет назад
Few binoculars have variable magnification. Are you sure yours have that? You did not mention a variable number, just the 10x magnification and the size of the objective lens (50 millimeters). If you have a second wheel besides a focus, maybe it's the diopter adjustment for one of the eyes (you focus for the first, typically left, eye [optionally closing your right eye] and then adjust the right diopter for the right eye [optionally closing the left eye]. When you're done with both adjustments, you should have the best focus.

@bruzote
@bruzote 5 лет назад
Twenty five describes how much the lens are used to bend the light for magnification. It's 25 times the width and 25 times the height. Technically, images magnified N times have N*N more area. If you are standing in a lot using a 6x binocular and it lets you see something just 24 feet wide from where you are standing (the edge of the image you see to the other edge just allows the 24 foot object to fit), then doubling the magnification to a 12-power setup would only let you see a 12 feet wide object. You would chop off the outer 6 feet on the left and right (and top and bottom) of the image. The size of the lens is what determines how much light you gather. If you a manufacturer wants to double the magnification without losing brightness, they can double the objective lens size. It gets more confusing when you into these details, including field of view. In the end, it's not just basic ratios that matter. It matters how much the manufacturer uses the lenses and prisms to gather and bend the light.

This video isn't exactly correct. I have a pair of porro 10X50 binoculars with a 6.8 degree field of view, its not the biggest but its huge for 10X. It feels like there is more freedom to navigate, no looking down a straw tube effect because of the wide field of view making movement less noticeable. I have used binoculars with less power where the movement was more noticeable because the field of view was narrower, around 4 to 5 degrees, these were roof design but using porro in the 7X to 8X with a massive field of view of 8 degrees or more where there were no noticeable shakes. My experience is that a wider field of view makes an image more stable than if it has a narrower field of view. I am not the only person to notice this. Which brings me to the next bit. The claim that higher magnification makes a field of view narrower is not completely true. The field stop of the eyepiece is what defines the field of view size within the focal length of the optical instruments limits. This is why you can get higher power binoculars with wider fields of view than lower power binoculars. One other thing that can cause an image to shake are the weight of the binoculars and this is different for people.
