Good sir, thank you very much for the clarification. My girlfriend and I are getting into this space, and I am leaving with a lot more understanding!

Excellent video. Good explanation. Now onto compounded errors for registration? ;)

How did you know!!??! Yes, it's on my list.

@3D Forensics, this is the best, most straightforward explanation of laser scanner accuracy I've seen. Thanks for putting this together! I agree with @Jarrod Carter, next video... registration error.

Nice video. Other things to consider are subject angles. Simply having a plane at a shallow angle will decrease accuracy so falls into the same subject of "what are you scanning". Finaly cleanliness of the mirror can have a big impact. The slightest left over residue on the glass or mirror can cause quite drastic errors to the ranging accuracy.

Very good points indeed.

Great video! What does the "quality" setting do? Does it just sample the same point more?
@3Dforensics
@3Dforensics 2 года назад
Sampling relates to the scanning rate which is indicated in the spec sheet. changing the scanning rate or quality will change the resultant noise/accuracy of the collected points. And yes, the lower quality means less sampling so greater noise/error. I think I may have to do a video on that too!

That's really a great video. But Cloud I have a quick question for u. So range noise is mainly influenced by the roughness and colour of the object surface and the distance. Range error is the error generated by the long distance. If I wanna calculate the finial deviation of a point when I scan a black object at 25m and get a range noise of 2.2mm. Do I need to add +_1mm of range error on the finial deviation?

The metric is a little different between noise and accuracy but basically yes, you need to account for the extra distance and surface reflectance

@@3DforensicsHi, I see that there are some content about Gaussian distribution and range noise in your video. Do you have any relevant paper that you can send me? I am a PHD student and this really helps me a lot, thank you very much.

@@leonzhu528 I am using manufacturer specifications for laser scanners which are readily available online. In my videos I was referring to Leica and FARO more specifically.
