A motherboard can look complex, busy, and confusing, but today I break it down for beginner's and explain each major part of the motherboard, how it works, and how to figure out other parts on your own to better know your motherboard.

So what else do you guys want explained? GPU, RAM, VRM Design?? I also explain these things over my live streams and other general questions, so let's talk hardware at www.twitch.tv/jdtechgear

Talk about one of the most over-looked and underrated piece of equipment, power source.
@jdtechgear
@jdtechgear 6 лет назад
I was going to mention that, but my knowledge is very limited on power supplies and don't know if people would be interested enough beyond just knowing what's a well received PSU manufacturer and what's not
@gregormiller4037

Hehe...GET them interested. Search diff. power sources, rails etc..I think you'll enjoy it.

Just discovered your channel after looking up motherboards explained. Much appreciated. Great overview. This comes quite a while after you originally posted this video, but I would love if you did a deeper dive into motherboards. Specifically regarding VRM's, PCIe slots and what x16,x8,or means as well and how the number of lanes directly correlates to your CPU. Also how overpopulating PCIe slots will inhibit performance. Thanks a bunch.

Hey JD, thanks for the video. Me being someone who knows how to build a PC, I had no issue understand this video. With that said... I linked the video to a friend, who knows nothing about building a computer and very little about motherboards as a whole. They told me that they could not understand the acronyms being used. Also, they said that the video was much to fast for them to follow along with. This left them confused, which made it difficult for them to grasp what you were explaining. This is not to say that this video isn't useful, because it is. Thanks again JD. 👍
@jdtechgear
@jdtechgear 6 лет назад
Thanks Geo! And thanks for the feedback from your friend, do they know the basic components that go into a computer? I do have a video to reference that if it helps at all.
@GeoSam
@GeoSam 6 лет назад
My friend is aware of the "basic" components, that make up a computer, but they would not attempt building a PC on their own. I was just curious to know, if they could understand an explanation of a motherboard's anatomy, by watching a video about it. Not necessarily this specific video, but any video on the subject. It seems that this isn't the case. Perhaps this has more to do with my friend's ability, to comprehend, or understand tutorials presented in video format and not who or how the video is presented. There are some people, who just don't and will never get it. No matter how much information they're given. I'm afraid my friend my be one of those people. LoL!

Nicely done JD. Lot's of folks have no clue at all as to what all the parts of their motherboards are and do, it's always nice to see a simple tutorial to explain it. I will be using this one as a teaching tool for my students, it covers all the bases well, thanks!

This was very helpful. I'm doing all my research to begin PC gaming and building. I've been researching all components separately and taking my notes. My question next would be comparing motherboards. What would be high end features? What motherboards would you avoid? Does the performance of the PC change with different boards? Thanks for the work you did here!
@jdtechgear
@jdtechgear 4 года назад
Thanks James, glad I could help! The differences between the high end boards and midrange usually rely with its overclocking capabilities and power control, better LAN connection, more NVME slots and so forth. The big thing is power delivery and what not to high end chips. That requires a decent amount of research to begin with. Just finding the features you need vs want to have is a good place to start.

Can we get more videos explaining the Motherboard Anatomy? I want to upgrade my motherboard, but I dont know what to search for. I am not sure how I know if I'm getting a newer and greater version of the current motherboard I have now. What should I be looking for when trying to find a new motherboard? I would really appreciate it, and think someone other than myself has ran along this question.
@cheeze6799
@cheeze6799 5 лет назад
The reason that you should use the topmost slot for your graphics card is not because it is less travel time between the CPU, it is because usually the topmost slot is pci x16 slot, where as other slots might be x8 or x4, mean that the other slots have less pins on them
