Obstructive Sleep Apnea affects nearly 1 in 15 people. Historically, the healthcare community has been looking for the overweight, over 50-year-old, male patient as the person who should be tested for obstructive sleep apnea. This paradigm is now shifting and the healthcare community is screening any patient who presents with any of the signs and symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea due to the fact that between 80-90% of patients with obstructive sleep apnea are undiagnosed. Obstructive sleep apnea also affects children who are showing their own unique symptoms of this untreated disease.
Dental professionals have a unique opportunity to see many of the early warning signs that a patient may present with. Often, these early warning signs have been glossed over and we have been taught to treat the symptom and not the underlying disease.
Managing obstructive sleep apnea can seem complex due to the wide array of treatments available; however, dental professionals can and should play a critical role in screening and treating patients with obstructive sleep apnea. Treating sleep apnea in the dental office not only will improve our patients’ overall health but it will reduce damage to the dentition while offering dental professionals additional treatments that they can offer their patients.
