What is Central Sleep Apnea?

Join us for Sleep Apnea Awareness Day! All month sleephealth.org will discuss the less common types of apnea, like central sleep apnea (CSA). Raising awareness for all people, of all ages, to become empowered advocates for quality sleep for themselves and their loved ones!
CSA is a form of sleep-disordered breathing that occurs when the brain fails to send regular signals to the breathing muscle (diaphragm) during sleep. As a result, breathing is either not attempted or becomes more shallow than normal. This is very different than the more common #OSA, where the body tries to breathe but the airway remains closed or partially obstructed.
While CSA may share many of the same symptoms with obstructive #sleepapnea, disturbed sleep and consequent daytime impairment, including excessive daytime sleepiness #EDS, the testing results and treatment options can be different.

I wake up gasping for breath and an intense heart beat. My wife tells me that periodically she can tell that I'm not breathing during non-sleeping hours.

I was diagnosed with Central Sleep Apnea in 2012 as a 51 year old after discovering I had severe heart, neurological, and vision problems. I am female. Immediately I was put on an ASV that changed my life. Oxygen was added a year later, so I sleep with the oxygen concentrator set on 2 and the ASV any time I sleep or nap and feel like a new person. I was waking up 97 times an hour, every hour I slept. Now with the ASV and oxygen it is 3 or 4 times per hour. I feel better than I ever have in my life and am now 60. Modern medicine is a gift to the world. 🏆

My apneas are 99-107 times an hour, Central Sleep Apnea being primary which seems totally impossible to me. I was diagnosed at age 50 after pushing for a sleep study & ultimately telling the 3rd doctor I'm willing to change doctors again because I know I have a problem. As a 5'2 120 lb woman they simply refused to believe I had a problem & I was diagnosed as hypochondriac. The 3rd doctor made me wait 2.5 months to see the new doctor coming into town because in her words "he's also a psychiatrist." After diagnosis, where they actually called me within 4 hours of me leaving the clinic with an appointment in 2 hours, rather than having me wait until the next week, she congratulated herself for sending me. 😲😡 It's 23 years later & I'm still trying to get an ASV & oxygen, rather than a CPAP or Bi-pap machine. It's discouraging spending so much of my life either exhausted or 'sleeping.' I put sleeping in quotes because in fact I'm more awake than asleep. It affects all aspects of my life, financially possibly being the most impactful one as it keeps me on the brink of poverty. Please pray & send good vibes that the doctor at my upcoming November 22nd, 2022 appointment will prescribe the best treatment for me. I'm also highly allergic to metals, including medical staples, pins, & titanium plates so the procedure where they implant a device in your brain would not only not work for me but probably would kill me as I developed Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome within hours of having three temporary pins put in my broken wrist. It took me changing doctors to have that diagnosed also as the surgeon would only say "of course you're in pain, you just had surgery." I've avoided needing to be on gabapentin for the rest of my life because I was fortunate to be told by people I trusted, that if I quit gluten immediately, I would not have symptoms. I was amazed when a couple years later The gluten in a 1-in square 1/8 of an inch thick piece of birthday cake set off my pain. It took me almost 5 months to recover from that. ☮️🙏🏼💞

My first (last) sleep study was in 1999 & I had to pressure/beg for another study that I'm getting tonight, 11/22/22. 99-107 episodes of primarily Central apnea. I'm fed up with the doctors in my area & am probably getting less than optimal care because my only insurance is medicare. And that's because I had to stop working full time at a job I loved at the age of 50 because of the apnea, brain tumor, hashimoto thyroid, & a neck/back injury. I'm allergic to metals so an implant is out. My fingers are crossed, prayers said that tonight's sleep study brings a better solution.

I was recently diagnosed with central and obstructive (mostly central) sleep apnea. I was exhausted every day but, it was the headaches that got me in to see my doctor. I was waking up multiple times a night with absolutely horrendous headaches! Did both a home and in-lab sleep study. Turns out I was having 107 episodes per hour and my lowest oxygen level during sleep lab study was 66. Apparently, it never got above 82. So now, I'm trying to get used to my ASV machine. It's been a month now. Last night and the night before were the first times I was able to sleep through the night with my mask. Oh man, does it feel good to actually sleep!! Turns out, I had severe central and obstructive apnea and was extremely hypoxic. Damn! Good thing I got checked out!! My "events" are now down to 3-8 per hour. It varies. But, far better than 107!! Mine also has oxygen added.

Notice that there was an initial inaccurate diagnosis and NO follow up. The GP only knows there is a 60% failure rate and so it must be lack of patient cooperation. Couldn’t possibly be lack of physical knowledge and experience. My physicians solution to this failure rate decided that by withholding the sleep test and CPAP until a crisis ( CAR accident) before taking the next step. Asking other patients have had the identical experience. Perhaps training is required here ?

Can anyone tell me if this is what I have? While laying down at night, I am fully awake, but stop breathing. Fully conscious, even focusing on breathing. But the moment I stop focusing on breathing, and start to drift off to sleep, I catch myself not breathing, and gasp for air. I have OSA - this is *different* From what I've gathered, it is either central apnea, or congestive heart failure. Really hope it's the first one.
