I think youre right about the European Blau being present. It makes sense based on the Punnet Square you did and the phenotypes of the offspring you're seeing. This is absolutely fascinating! I really appreciate all the work you're doing to show the Punnett Squares. This is the part of guppy breeding I'm really enjoying, working with color genetics, rather than just breeding a pure strain and keeping it that way. Thanks so much for sharing this fun aspect of the guppy breeding hobby. I don't think anyone else is currently doing videos like this. We need to see more of this from more people! 💖

it would be a pretty cool thing to make a recognized breed of animal by yourself. its a small dream of mine to make such thing one day, like a fish, a chicken or a budgie. Also another fun video, keep it up Mr. Ivan.

It really would be but very challenging! This is why I chose to try and re-establish an existing strain to see if I can understand its inheritance.

Hi Ivan. Another great video. Based on the results of the latest back cross, I think there is definately a Blau gene in play. That is why some of the males are now white with some yellow in their dorsals and caudals. The red has been stripped out of both and their bodies. Also, many of the females no longer have red in their caudal fins. Because females show less color, it is hard to figure out what genes they carry [as you noted]. To pick females for the next back cross this is what I suggest: pick females that appear almost colorless. They will definately carry the Blau gene. Also pick females with the lightest coloration [smallest amount of yellow and no orange/red in their finnage]. Do not pick any females showing a pattern or black spots on the caudal or dorsal. I note that some appear to have black spots on their caudal fins. Best of luck. I love this video series. Looking forward to more!

@IvansGuppies 6 месяцев назад
These are my thoughts exactly. Some of the females do actually have some red. Its just very subtle and doesn't show up on camera well. For the next selection, I'll be avoiding them regardless. In terms of the next crosses, I might primarily focus on "sidecrosses?" between this cross and crosses 6 and 7. Those broods are actually throwing some guppies that have a similar phenotype as this brood. Crosses 6 and 7 should technically throw some guppies with a similar genotype too, albeit with lower frequency. I like the increased diversity this offers as long as I'm careful with my selections to not lose the white. However, as a safeguard, Ill likely make this additional backcross with the cross 5 brood. Ill just have to prepare more tanks than I have at the moment.
@al20o33
@al20o33 6 месяцев назад
what you are calling "side crosses" are referred to as "out crosses." typically meaning between two different lines or strains. Are you planning on using males from any of the crosses? If so, obviously only use those with the full white coloration and smallest amount of yellow coloration, assuming you are still going for the all white guppy genotype. I'd continue to make the same choices you are using for the females in your crosses [e.g., those showing the most white color etc.]. I'll be interested in seeing how the HB lines are coloring up. Best of luck.

@@al20o33 Yup! You’re reading my mind! I’m trying to avoid too much inbreeding if I can. Having a good idea of all the genotypes really helps to stay within the first goal I set here. I’m also looking forward to seeing all the phenotypes from the HB lines. There should be some interesting ones.

I'm LOVING this series!! 💖💖💖 This video is making me realize that adding in some white males would cross really well with my Mutt Guppies, given the colors I breed for/work with. I'm going to work on finding some white males to add into my guppy breeding program this year. For a very long time I've had a soft spot for Magenta gene guppies. I incorporated them into my breeding project early on. Adding in some white males sounds so compatible with what I breed for currently. I can't wait to give it a try! Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful guppy breeding project! 💖💖💖

Im glad you are enjoying the videos! I think a video like that is a good idea. I might release one like it but I have not decided on a specific end goal yet. I know I want to experiment with different tail and fin types, but there is a few to choose from. I value taking things one step at a time because otherwise it gets a little overwhelming with how complex genetics can get.

If you got 5% more technical with your language, this would be an amazing teaching resource for high school and first year of university genetics students! If only it said the guppy lacked the allele or variant and not the gene!
@IvansGuppies
@IvansGuppies 6 месяцев назад
Thanks! How technical these videos should be is actually something I'm still trying to figure out. It's a balance with who the expected audience will be. If the audience is coming from those that have a genetics background, these videos can and should be more accurate. However, I then lose the audience that is interested in the guppy hobby and simply wants to dip a toe in understanding where the color of their guppies is coming from. I have not figured it out yet. Although the complexity of each subsequent video is starting to increase so it makes sense to start increasing the technical rigor too.

It is for general viewing so he can't get too technical. I think he is doing a really good job as it is. It's the best series on guppy genetics I have ever watched on You Tube. If he does another series then perhaps he can amp it up.

Thank you for making these short videos with such clear demonstration - it must be so much fun to play with! I've been fascinated with guppy color genetics for years but have not been sure how to take the plunge into learning. Thank you for making this kiddie pool for us to start out in! Is P. wingei/Endlers' colour genetics as wild/varied as P. reticulata, do you know? I know they can hybridize, so that's a whole other can of worms, of course, but P. wingei alone?

Thank you for sharing your knowledge, do you think it is possible to introduce colors only to females without significant interference with the colors of males? I mean specifically the Endler Santa Maria Bleeding Heart variety?
@IvansGuppies
@IvansGuppies 6 месяцев назад
You're welcome! To be honest, I'm not sure. It would have to be something that is sex-linked. It would be very challenging and would likely only work with specific colors. Im not familiar with the Endler Santa Maria Bleeding Heart strain. But I do know that the Japan Blue trait tends to only be carried and expressed by males. So maybe, but very hard, especially because females tend to not have vibrant colors to begin with.
@ReneesZooTube
@ReneesZooTube 6 месяцев назад
@IvansGuppies Japan Blue definitely is typically sex linked to the males y-chromosome. I know for some fancy strains, half black can be X or y linked. There's some interesting interactions between Green, Blue, and Purple guppies according to IFGA literature. Tail shape and tail color can definitely be influenced by the females chosen, for sure. A lot of guppy color is carried by the males, but some is carried by the females. Just depends on the genetics of the individual fish/lines you have.

@lemonlizard1
@lemonlizard1 4 месяца назад
@@IvansGuppies I'm referring to the 24k gold strain
@IvansGuppies
@IvansGuppies 4 месяца назад
I'm not too familiar with the 24K gold strain (24KG). It seems like there are both blond bodied and gray bodied varieties. I'm also not sure what the color of the albino platinum's (AP) is without the albino factor. But this would be a fun experiment to try. If I were to try, this is how I'd go about it: 1. Cross male AP x female 24KG (Cross 1) 2. At the same time in a separate tank, cross female 24KG x male AP (Cross 2) 3. Wait for F1, making sure to separate males and females as they develop to keep the females virgin. I suspect the colors in these offspring will be quite uniform. (But I am not sure how they will look like). I'm also pretty sure crosses 1 and 2 will look the same but it'll be interesting to see. If they are the same, then only step 1 or only step 2 is necessary, not both. (although two lines will diversify the genetics and result in a less severe inbreeding). 4. Pair Cross 1 x Cross 2 for your next cross (Cross 3). If you are lucky, this is where you will likely see a few offspring with the characteristics you are looking for. This is the cross I'd try to get as many cross 3 offspring as I could to increase my chances. Id do this by using multiple pairs of crosses 1 and 2. Note, by skipping either step one or two, all that is necessary in step 4 is a direct F1 cross to produce the F2 generation. Let me know if you end up trying!
