This video is about the Lathe Polygon Cutter Attachment for metal lathes. It demonstrates a simulation program which can calculate how flat the faces of the polygon are. It explains how to calculate the number of sides on the polygon from the gear ratio and number of cutters mounted on the rotating cutter head. The simulator is included in the free online program called https:RideTheGearTrain.com.

I remember hearing about polygonal turning back in trade school 20 years ago. I could not find any resources on the topic at the time. I remember someone suggesting there were designs that moved the toolpost using a cam track or crank. The single flute track you demonstrated using the program must have really low cutter speed at some point.

Isn't it amazing the difference that the internet has made to availability of information and resources! I have just been using Google Books to look up the history of screw cutting lathes for my next video. I was teaching computer science* and using email and bulletin boards just before the internet (HTML) became available in 1989. Now they are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Department of *Computer Science at the University of Waikato in New Zealand.

A lot of work, quite nice output...I didn't see the "flatness" output

The data displayed after drawing each polygon includes "indentation" which is a measure of flatness. Sorry, I didn't mention the word "Flatness" again to explain that indentation is really the opposite of flatness. An indentation of zero represents perfect flatness, and one of the hexagons nearly reached zero. If you draw a straight line between two vertices (corners) it represents a flat face. The actual curve deviates from that line creating an indentation and the distance between the line and the curve (at the center of the line) is a measure of indentation. It is also expressed as the indentation divided by the width of the flat and multiplied by 100 to give percent indentation. The third method of describing flatness is to fit a circle to the three points (the two ends of the flat and the mid-point of the curved surface). The radius of this circle is also given. These measurements are in the same units of measurement as the radius of the workpiece (R). If R is in mm, then all other measurements, including indentation, are in mm. If R is in inches, then indentation is in inches.

This is awesomely cool, but why is it needed, when we have mills and indexers? Not to say this isn't elegant, but it seems overengineered for a problem already solved with less/cheaper tools?

Yes, you have a point, but the designers of some CNC machines think it is worth including as it is fast. I don't have a mill, and until I built the milling attachment for my lathe it would not have been possible to make a polygon. Thanks for your input.
