"Painting Humanity" - Recorded on 16th March 2013 at TEDxLoughborough in Loughborough, UK.
Venue: Loughborough Student's Union at Loughborough University.
■ Talk:
Turn on the TV or head to the Daily Mail online, and you could be forgiven for thinking we live in an age of unprecedented sexual hedonism, fuelled by teen sexting, pornography, and The Only Way Is Essex. But the reality of young people's sex lives looks very different. In this engaging and thought-provoking talk, Rachel Hills introduces the Sex Myth: the modern Western philosophy of sexuality that ties our identity and value to what we do in the bedroom, with anxiety and inflated expectations as the result.
■ Speaker:
Rachel Hills is an Australian writer living in the heart of England -- London. Her work has been published in The Atlantic, The Spectator, Vogue, Cosmopolitan, NYmag.com and more, and her blog, Musings of An Inappropriate Woman, has more than 50,000 subscribers around the globe. Rachel's book, The Sex Myth, will be published internationally in 2014.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I think what makes people so angry about this talk is the fact that someone is exposing the lies 80% of people say to their friends about the number of sex partners.

What an incredibly important message. 14:32 'It's about challenging the notion that your desirability & your sex life say more about who you are than your friendships, your talents, your compassion for other people.'

'To be a little bit more critical about what you see, and a little bit more honest in what you say' For me, the former part is more difficult, which needs more wisdom. Thank you, Rachel. This talk is really good.

This is true for me. But my myth goes beyond sex. I have made myself very unhappy due assuming my life wasn't interesting or accomplished enough. I was constantly comparing myself with others,what they were doing, combined with what I thought others were doing , with some reference to the media portrayal of the teens and 20something's. I was so worried about wasting my youth by not doing enough exciting things.

I absolutely share your sentiments. Facebook is the worst for perpetuating this. I moved away from my college city and left all my friends to focus on my goals. When I returned, they were right where I left them, doing drugs, worried about "boys", being codependent... They are great people, but our goals don't match up anymore. I used to think that I was inadequate because I wasn't doing the things they were doing. I'm much happier now that I don't compare myself to others anymore.

+aylix89 I was much the same. I wish I could go back and do my 20's over, and this time spend less time fretting about all the fun others were having and instead get off my ass and go out and enjoy myself more.

+Christine Nanteza Too right. FB is an excellent insecurity-inducer. All one's friends constantly posting the best tidbits of their life. Whether it's their new makeover, the raise they got at their job, their perfect-looking kids that make you feel like a lousy parent, the most flattering picture of their S.O. to make everyone jealous... It's a nonstop barrage. People who have a hard time with self-esteem issues really need to stay away from social media.

Carlos Vera Hey there, brother. I'm sorry to hear you say that (even though I believe many of us feel the same way for various reasons.) I do have a question for you though. I was wondering how someone like you only had one girlfriend your whole life? You look like a good lookin' guy. Could it be that you are very picky when it comes to picking a women. I was wondering if you can shed some light on why only one so far? I know some men that are way out of shape, jobless and downright undesirable in almost every way, and they get girlfriends all the time. Help me out here. Hope to hear from you.
@FacetsOfTruth
@FacetsOfTruth 9 лет назад
trident3b Yeah! I'm intact. I'm very healthy and all my parts work perfectly. I've had sex thousands of times. Married twice and my wives were animals in the sack. But they put way too much importance on sex. It actually ruined it for me. I got to the place where trying to give them enough, became like a second job. I've kept celibate for over 8 years now, and on occasion, I do miss it.
@nickdipaolofan5948
@nickdipaolofan5948 7 лет назад
Sex is a different level of importance to everyone. Just because it is not that important to you does not mean that it shouldn't be that important to everyone. Also, age has a lot to do with it. As I am aging (late 30's) I am noticing my drive declining, but in my twenties I would probably hump a pumpkin if it looked at me the right way................. Another big thing is that many men get married partially because they found a girl they are sexually compatible with and THEN once they were married the woman pulls the rug from under him and withholds sex regularly. Now what? She changed the game and now he want sex but made a commitment not to get it anywhere else. The resentment for that is more powerful then the actual need for sex.

we tend to unknowingly take on our parents ideas about sex whether it was shamed accepted in most cases they made it seem like it was a bad thing. I am now trying to recover from the trauma I used to feel bad for wanting to have sex now I'm 37. The lack of conversations around the topic in the house left me confused about myself

There are two interesting points that seem to be squashed together. 1) Few people have the kind of sex life that's portrayed in the media. I'd like to know more about your interviewees and their background (maybe there's an article somewhere) since I feel that statistics don't really say much here. My partner, for instance, has had almost 200 partners whereas 3 of my closest friends have had only 1 or 2. 2) Your sex life is simply your sex life, it doesn't define you as a person. I agree but you have to understand that sex is omnipresent for a reason. We all want to be loved and we care what people think of us. Add sex in the picture and you’ll understand why we’ll always measure ourselves by how desirable we are, at least to a degree.
@SamArt90
@SamArt90 9 лет назад
Achilles94627 Neither. Just someone who regards sex as a highly pleasurable physical activity and nothing more than that (at least used to). I hate to reinforce the stereotype, but yes, he's also gay and finding someone new to sleep with can take only a few minutes.

+Mark Heath The problem is not just that men only want sex. Why do so many millions of women dress in a way that simply advertises sex? It's not simply because men expect them to. These same women say that it feels good to look and feel sexy. So who's got sex on the brain??? Everyone it seems.

Just jumping in here to back up Faerie Tale and Jack Housman here. You would be surprised how many 20-year-olds have never had a girlfriend or boyfriend. Or if they *have* had one, who don't feel like they have their heads around the whole sex and relationships thing despite that. There are loads of you out there. It's just that most of the time, people only talk about things that make them look (and feel) confident and experienced.

Rachel Hills Yeah but most of them don't have the added problem of having Aspergers syndrome, and statistics show that the average age people loosing their virginity currently is at age 17. I'm also not perticularly hansome or wealthy etc. My chances are literally getting worse by the day. Not to mention I live in a town of just 10,000 people with no other towns our size for 60 miles, plus most everyone is religious here and I'm not, and that's a problem. They really need a "rip out your emotions" option when your born, because I would be all over that. There is also my depression so I would have to assume I don't kill myself if I'm to have any hope of finding a relationship. Which I now suspect wont ever happen.

definitely one of the best ted talks I've seen, mostly cause I've honestly never really even heard this issue brought up. Me and my soulmate constantly talk about sort of the differences I guess between just having sex and making love, because the difference is huge!!! And I guess when my momtold me when I was younger sex should be a special thing I just didn't get it cause I was younger and inexperienced, and well probably like most guys I felt like how many girls I've fucked was suppose to be a really big source of a man's pride. Well that's bullshit if you ask me, because I take a lot more pride in knowing that I share something much deeper and more special with one person then I do in my number of partners. Idk just RU-vid ventin i guess lol

Good video, goodish talk, but a great example of a soft thesis. After watching, can you establish what she was trying to say? Most would say "the sex myth is bullshit." great, except in the beginning she developed the sex myth, her own term, and barely defined it. If she had said, "the sex myth is a set of sexual behaviors and standards presented as typical behavior for purposes of entertainment and or advertising, yet are contrary to actual contemporary mores," and then gone on the prove it was bullshit (it is) this would be better. Remember, when public speaking, always have clear definitions, and make your thesis and summary crystal clear.

So did she believe the 20 something guy who told her he had had 300+ sex partners? One new one every weekend over six years. I guess it wouldn't be that difficult depending on your situation, such as living in a tourist destination. Back when I was a younger man, scoring was fairly easy, but it wasn't what my life revolved around. For a lot of guys, it is. They're the great spreaders of a lot of things.

Did she have a point? Certainly not fifteen minutes worth of a point. This was just a directionless Ted talk and not one of the better ones. So, there is a clear line between actual sex statistics and what people either report or are led to believe via media... this leads to self-esteem issues with various possible outcomes. There's little focus, little evidence, minimal examples, and no visual stimulation. Did she ever prepare to give this talk? Waste of time.

Tobias Brown Hey Tobias. Sorry this wasn't clearer for you; it was an early(ish) iteration of a pretty complex idea. To sum it up in a sentence, The Sex Myth is the force that regulates our sexual behaviour, by teaching us that our value resides in the contents of our sex lives.

The cited woman obviously had self-esteem problems & doubted that his given reason was all the reason for celebacy. Another good christian sex myth is that the number of people you have sex with is more important than how many times you have sex. Christians have their condoned jesus partners - but may have sex with these jesus partners every single day. If someone is having sex every single day, and no different than a non religiuos person having sex with a different person each day, that is someone having a lot of sex. Partner ok'd by the church or not.
@mastersnet18
@mastersnet18 8 лет назад
There was a practical reason for making that rule. Having sex with a different person each day makes it FAR more likely that you catch an STD. In fact, even today with condoms, we still need to be careful about how many people we sleep with.
@jajabinks7831
@jajabinks7831 8 лет назад
+Taran Marduk the number of partners is more important because sex, biologically speaking, is for reproduction. So if you're a woman and you have sex with 1 male 100 times a year and you get pregnant, then you will know for sure who the father is. Likewise if you're the man in this scenario, and you trust the woman that she didn't cheat on you, then you can be sure and confident that you are in fact the father of the baby, and you aren't unwittingly raising another mans child (which biologically speaking is genetic suicide - not only does the male NOT reproduce, he puts his energy into propagating some other males genes). If you're a woman and you have sex with 100 men one time over the course of a year, and you get pregnant. Good luck trying to figure out which guy you let ejaculate inside your oft-used vagina got you pregnant! And good luck even more trying to convince this guy (if you even find him again, or remember him...) to provide for you and be the father for your child. I'm not sure many guys would think a woman who sleeps around like that is the kind of woman they want as the mother as their child, or a wife. And of course if you and your partner have only ever in your lives had sex with each other then the risk of STD's is extremely low. Studies show that if both partners are virgins before marriage, then they have the highest liklehood of never divorcing, higher chance than all the other couples who had sex with other people. And studies show that women who were vigins before marriage are the most sexually satisfied, and rate their sex lives as more enjoyable and fulfilling than the other couples surveyed. Basically it looks like the optimum scenario is to have one partner, and you both commit to each other for a long time (could be marriage, whic is for life). This way each time you have sex you are also learning and improving for the next time. You would learn exactly what feels best for your partner and vice versa, you partner very adept at making you feel good. I don't think some floozy on a drunken one night stand could compete against sex with your loving wife of 20 years who knows exactly how to make you feel good. And who will be there in the morning, hasn't slinked back to her home in "the walk of shame" that casual sex practitioners become proficient at.
