My favourite off this album is Rosetta Stoned. I've read its loosely based on true events where this man appears in a hospital without a name or any cause to be there. He then proceeds to tell the doctor that he got abducted by aliens while he was tripping on some acid. He then tells the doctor that the world will end, but he can't remember what they said (the aliens). And then he walks out of the hospital and is never seen again
I love it for how Maynard kind of disses people who think they've unlocked mysterious universal secrets just by having a crazy trip. Not saying there isn't something potentially profound in psychedelics but something like Lateralus (album) deals with a spiritual process of getting to that point and people who (seem) to bypass that with acid or what have you are really at risk of missing out on it.
I love it as well because it seems to be a reflection of many people's crazy egotistical fear/fantasy of being the one person chosen by an alien race to convey the message of humankind's own destruction to them. "Born to bear and bring to all the details of our ending, To write it down for all the world to see. But I forgot my pen, Shit the bed again..." It also focuses on the old "I had an amazing psychadelic experience, but failed to write it down" idea. Hence "the shit the bed again" line. That's classic!!! What a song.
10 000 Days is their best album in my opinion. No album could make me loose my sense of time this hard. As i go trough it, im not listening to the music, im melting into it, and becoming a part of it. That's how i can describe the feeling
My personal favorite is Ænema probably because it was my first and the one that "broke through" to me from my initial resistance. A lot of people take a bit to "warm up" to Tool and then it clicks and youre all in! 10000 Days is outstanding, but it's not an easy listen, you kinda have to commit to it, but man when you do it is unbelievable!
In Rosetta Stoned he is talking about LSD and DMT. When he says "fuck me. Gotta be. The deadhead chemistry. The blotter got right on top of me." Clear acid reference. Before that he says something about smoking dmt and Krispy Kremes and being just outside of area 51 lol
@@malevolence85 That song is about a friend of their's that told them a story of smaoking DMT and then thinking they were abducted by aliens and told how the world would end.
I've never got that feeling from it. Maybe it's because I don't really pay attention to lyrics. To me it's not even sad music LOL but again, I obviously listen to music differently than you do.
Anyone brave enough to take a shot at deciphering Keenan's lyrics gets a thumb up from me! Bands like Tool are a dying breed, so enjoy their music, and share it with others. Thank you as always for the entertaining videos my friend.
Anyone else notice that Maynard’s lyrics are ruined by one or two poorly written cheesy lines. Prime example for me is the “We are all one mind” in Reflection.
Sthaman Sinha Cliche might be a better term. I feel like he could have described it better. Like the rest of the song is a giant metaphor so why couldn’t he do something like that with this line?
@@ruipereira3230 I think i might agree. Those songs are just something else. The level of emotion in the songwriting is something that never happens twice.
Rosetta Stoned is a perfect display of Maynard's vocal range. He manages to combine the lyrics with his talent to produce a track that so effectively potrays the gradual breakdown of a once, powerful, confident man.
It's their most accessible record to a new listener, in my opinion. I would never have enjoyed Ænima or Lateralus the way I enjoy them now if I hadn't discovered 10,000 days first
Jaakko Hunnakko couldn’t agree more. Songs like The Pot and Vicarious are very friendly to a new listener as opposed to far more complex songs like Third Eye or Lateralus
It's most likely because 10k is more deeper into roots of emotions than the previous albums. Truth be told, 10,000 Days would only work if the listener listens deep into the lyrics and the message the artist is saying. It's harder if the listener doesn't feels the same connection.
I stumbled upon a couple of tool songs individually but I wanted to know what to listen to from there, so I asked my uncle and he recommended 10,000 days. Let's just say he's my favorite uncle now.
@@caiinperience8722 The title is called "Understanding Tool's 10000 Days" and he covered a third of the album. Just pointing out that it's a bit clickbaitey
even if he mentions it, the album even has songs about maynards mom and he doesnt even talk about them at any given point except for the explaination of 10.000 days. the vid could have prolly twice as long, its not like a normal album with filler songs, everything has a meaning here... also i dont think vicarious is about what he talked in the video, but rather how we are addicted to media and bad news to make ourselfs feel like we're in a superior state compared to other people. (havent looked up if what he said is confirmed by the band, though)
@@PaN1xX I think he was like "Imma talk about this whole album" then he finished the second song and was like "Theres too much to talk about. I'll just talk aboout the pot (the easiest to listen to/popular song) and close it out"
It just occurred to me that I've never listened to 10000 days all the way through, I've just listened to the songs on their own. I guess I know what I'm doing tonight.
I envy ur experience...I was 11 years younger when I first heard it n loved it...the pot got me into tool honestly...then I fell in love with vicarious n jambi...both wings tracks still make my heart break n weep...Rosetta stoned is awesome...intention is gorgeous...N right in two is a master piece...I wish I could forget n rediscover em;) May be 10000 days on acid for the first time will be close enough
When I tried acid, I didn't need anything to listen to Tool. All I needed to do was think of the song I wanted to hear, and then it was playing. And it was pretty much all Tool, once I realized that.
It's a beautiful album. It took me a couple of years to realise that. I remember when it came out in 2006. I loved it, but like all of Tool albums, it grows on you. I f'n LOVE it now and can't imagine Tools back catalogue without it. Brilliant.
Right In Two is one of the most thought provoking and profound tracks ever written by a band in history. April 2019....13 years since 10000 Days and hopefully the release of the new album.
@@Cymanytb I don't think it's greed. Sure, there are crazy fans who send death threats to the band over a new album, but most people just enjoy their music so much they want to hear more of it. It's hardly greed to want to appreciate more of the work of an artist. At the end of the day, if Tool didn't want to record a new album, they wouldn't have. They clearly decided to get back in the game after a long break because they felt creative. None of them must be hurting for money, anyway. As I heard it the only person who needed convincing was MJK.
@Sumnjiva Vodoriga Probably not, but we are talking about an incredibly talented drummer, a expertise bassist, a riffwriting god that rivals that of Matt Pike and Buzz Osborne, and one of the most intelligent, and thought provoking lyricists out there. Even if it's not their best, there's still a high chance of it being a good album at the very least. That said, yes, we need to keep our expectations low, and minds open, so we're not disappointed. That's the reason albums like Chinese Democracy stung so hard, and why a lot of games that took forever to make have been so disappointing.
@Sumnjiva Vodoriga i do listen to other music. Tool's not even in my top 5 favorite bands. Im just saying, i don't think they can make an ouright terrible album. :P
Spoiler: Fear Inoculum is amazing. I don’t know if I’d say it’s their best work as a band, but Danny Carey is damn sure doing his best work. And he’s 58!
I only wish that tool knows how much they have helped me with this album when my father passed away october 1st 2006 this album spoke to my soul when i felt i had lost mine. I now have the life goal to somehow inspire people with my art, to show everyone they all have the abiity to take inspiration make new art and inspire a new generation
It won't. It's basically time to give up by now. They would have announced something if it was coming out it May. They can't just drop it randomly people don't care enough they need to hear teasers or something.
Dude, your videos are probably some of my favorite on the platform. You have such insightful disections of music which cover every topic and appeal of music with ease. You've made me a die hard radio head fan, and have inspired me to write articles about my favorite albums and musicians in my high school newspaper. Thank you so much, and keep up the great work!
Thank you for this! This is an underrated album. I even underestimated it when it first came out. I love the intellect and tone they put into their music. They are one of the greatest bands in history.
Wings for Marie part 2, Rosetta Stoned and Right In Two are also absolute masterpieces but I think this would’ve gone for 3 hours if you tried deciphering every track haha. Great video tho mate. Ppl will be talking about 10,000 Days in 50 years
The only word to describe tphe mighty masterpiece, more of who merges the lyrics with music to produce the energy, needed by artist the who can contribute both, and still make you feel the energy that could only allow you to feel the passion that could only be created by Tool. With pure passion, Kim Hensley
10000 days is Tool's most beautiful and emotional album. Lateralus is Tool's most spritual and metaphysical album. I can't wait to listen to the next one!
Rosetta stoned resonates with me on such a deep level. Had a similar experience on acid. Especially the lyrics “they took me by the hand and invited me right in, then they showed me something I don’t even know where to begin”. And just the whole concept of feeling like you’ve attained enlightenment, then forgetting it all when the drugs wear off
I think 10000 Days is their best album after Lateralus. Yes, Ænima is the album that defined their sound and the most important album for their growth, but Lateralus and 10000 Days have better, more original and complex songwriting. With those two records the band went in completely unexplored directions, creating some of the most beautiful compositions ever (Reflection, Lateralus, Wings pt. 1 and 2, Intension/Right In Two) and their sound is better than ever. Ænima is the one that launched them in the mainstream and the one that defined them, but musically the following records are just more complex and original imo.
@@thebatman1482 LOL I don't think anything on 10,000 Days measures up to Lateralus or Aenema. 10,000 Days certainly doesn't represent positive progress from Lateralus. If you ask me, songs like "The Pot" are a perfect example of catering to mainstream tastes. Plus the song goes on far longer than it has to. It's baffling that you belittle Aenema. It was the first Tool album I got into. So, perhaps it's more personal to me. But I don't see Aenema as ordinary or mainstream in any way, although I get what you're saying about it propelling Tool into the mainstream.
@@dasein9980 The Pot is not more mainstream than songs like Ænema for example. Also, 10,000 is much more complex as far as songwriting, and Jambi and wings show that. Also, how can an album be mainstream when there's a 20 minutes song in it? And also, songs like Intension/Right In Two, Wings and Rosetta Stoned are among the most complex, well written and best executed songs in the entire Tool catalogue. I'm not saying Ænima it's not good, it's one of the best 90s records, I'm saying that 10,000 Days is much better than people think.
@@temporarymomentary That seems understandable. Also, taking into account the sheer brilliance he displays in every record he touches, a single video covering him might turn out a bit underwhelming. Thanks for the update, though.
I honestly prefer Lateralus for every song on that album is great. 10,000 Days is amazing as well, but the Back Half of Lateralus (Lateralus, Disposition, Reflection, Traid) are just phenomenal
well, the letter "Æ" is a latin diphtong and pronounced [æ], which sounds like the "a" in "handle". i'm aware that Ænima is a neologism created by merging "anima" and "enema", and the band may pronounce it "Onima", because the letter "Æ" does not exist in the english alphabet and they just invented a way of saying it. but, sorry to be that guy, they turned "a" and "e" to "æ", so it's pronounced "Ænima", just as it is written.
@@yaboy8846 I know. as I said, the band pronounces it wrongly. they made it up out of two Latin words and the first letter is "æ", not "a". the way tool say it is with an american accent. coming from a language that actually has a phoneme for "æ", which is the same as the one in ancient Latin, that's how I hear it. so, who is right, the band or the rules of language?
@@christophbresch But if you really feel arguing over this, phonetic inconsistency is a huge thing in the English language. Take the words 'though' and 'tough' for example. Both are spelled almost identically but pronounced very differently. Words are made up all the time and the spelling doesn't always match the pronunciation. So yeah, I am going to take the bands pronunciation of a made up word rather than the pronunciation of some dude trying to show off his degree in languages.
Looking forward to your video on Fear Inoculum! I know a lot of T00L fans hated it and I too had some reservations upon first listening but I am here to tell you after many non stop plays, it has to be hands down the most elaborate and beautiful piece of art I've ever had the pleasure of passing through my ear holes. Honestly, I wanted to not like it because it was so different. But the more I listened, the more the lyrics hit home about getting older and having to evolve in order survive or risk the withering away of your mind. The fact that so many tool fans dismissed the new album just because it didnt have a bunch of aggressive lyrics and heavy apocalyptic riffs is truly saddening because that's not what the album is about and thus doesn't require a need to express the philosophy of it's themes through their old ways. It's about realizing that while searching for the meaning of life and a purpose, one can find themselves at death's door without having lived life to the fullest and how paranoia can lead to a waste of that life. You can listen to the album from track 1 to 7 (the path of spiraling down the hole into psychopathy) or from track 7 to 1 (the path from psychopathy to enlightenment and growing up) From 1 to 7, the album increasingly grows more chaotic and wild the further you listen. From 7 to 1, you start off in chaos and end in a more melodic structured song with lyrics focused on using your past and fears to propel you forward rather than hold you back. After I first listened, I felt like all this time had been wasted waiting on a new album but then I saw an interview where the band members said it will take fans several listens to really get the message and man they were right. I was listening to invincible one day then Descending played afterwards and I wanted to kick myself for judging the album so quickly. If you do a video on it, hopefully you can break down how great this album really is better than I can, that is if anyone ever read this novel of a comment lol.
"Big concepts".... yet no mention of Right in Two which tackles our very nature using the war in heaven as a backdrop. If you are going to examine a bands album, perhaps examine the full album and draw conclusions from that, not just a few songs.
i like how they refer to the release of a movie which questions the format of sound now that we listen to all of our music with visual accompaniment on youtube, who would have thought groundbreaker darlings tool would become so ineffective so quickly :)
Great video. Tool is such a complex and amazing band. Their success has been based solely on amazing music and dedication to art and not traditional "marketing". That is why after all these years the average person hasn't a clue who they are, yet they still sell arenas out in a blink.
10000 days is great, i feel the highlights of the album are really REALLY fantastic (e.g. titletrack, the Pot) but there is a lot of filler/ambient interludes, so it kind of makes the album less punchy anda abrasive (not in the sense of agression, but lateralus has far more momentum compared to 10000 days) compared to it predecessors. Thanks for the vid tho! :) knew most of it, but very well put.
I don’t think the reference to kangaroo court was a literal nod to actual kangaroo courts, I interpreted that it was a hyperbole of how he feels within the end of a relationship with someone or self
Lie is notoriously bad at voicing his videos from his accent to his pronunciation. He didnt even bother to look up how to pronounce Ænema or Jambi. Sloppy research, and it shows. His videos have been full of hot air lately, too. A whole lot of talk but not much meaning behind his words.
Robert Bradshaw Yes another great song.. My Top 5 favourite Melancholy songs (for now) are.. 1. 10,000 Days - Tool 2. True Love Waits - Radiohead 3. The Eternal - Joy Division 4. Nutshell - Alice in Chains 5. Indifference - Pearl Jam
What is there to say about Symphony X except they love fantasy and mythology? I'm not trying to be sarcastic or anything, I just thought they were singing about actual monsters rather than metaphorical monsters.
Look I’m here because like many I have a hard time digesting ALL of the Tool work. 10,000 days is fantastic and my favorite is right in two followed by Jambi, vicarious and the pot. I’m a long time fan of Lateralous but late to the party with this album. I will need time to chew on this one. It’s too bad right in two gets NO airplay. The pot gets the most attention and occasionally Jambi. I can’t wait for the new album to break! I am also super glad they finally released this stuff for the internet.
Jesse Hawkes yeah, I could never find it on Apple Music. Recently found all the full albums on YT, so I’m pretty excited about that. I’ve always wanted to check Tool out
Aenima and lateralus are superior to 10,000 days. 10,000 days is great, but it is hard for me to say it is more refined or complete than lateralus. 10,000 days is catchier and there are amazing individual drum or bass performances, time signature changes, etc. However, the songs just are not as good in my opinion.
He hates all non-whites, along with all jews, christians and muslims. Basically he should be the president of america or the president of 4chan right now. Hope I cleared that up for you
I can't pick my favorite or put the albums in order best to least best. Tool doesn't make bad records. I think I like 10,000 Days best because of how personal it is, the music and lyrics are genius, the track order is perfect for a listen thru and Jambi is my favorite Tool song
this is why I love tool compaired to any band out there they go so deep in every song name another band that talks about topics as deeply as tool go ahead ill wait
