The way your car is built plays a part in how it behaves on the road. As driving enthusiasts or simply as people who enjoy driving a good car, it is important to understand the basics that contribute to a oar performance on the road, and how we can maintain these traits or even improve on them.

Thank you Uncle YS explaining the handling of the cars. I am in tyre related industry for many years and it is true tyre performance is better in expensive range. For turbocharged vehicle I strongly not recommend to use entry level tyre even if it were Michelin XM2+. The more expensive tyre will able to provide better grip for high horsepower high torque vehicle meanwhile less body roll in corner due to harder sidewall. Maybe uncle YS can do a video for public to learn about tyre performance.

Old video but still found out very informative! Straight forward & easy to understand. Sir, do you plan on making a video about suspension setting such as stiffness & ride height that is ideal on Malaysia road? -could be a content from your personal opinion & driving experience. I think that could be very helpful for most of car enthusiast in Malaysia that want to have mixed combination in terms of improve handling while not damaging our car. Cheers!

Thank you for the information uncle YS! Hope for future video that explains more about suspension setups, and especially role of anti roll bars, as from my point of understanding they are quite controversial! Would love to hear your opinions on this, uncle!
@aeroline11

To me I don't think it is a need to explain about anti roll bar since public users take the car in normal use rather than on track. If explanation of suspension design such as multilink, double wishbone or torsion beam is good to share but if modification setup then not really suit for most people.

Good stuff Uncle YS! 🙏🏻I recalled from another video you did on tyres few months ago, you said soft compound tyres give better grip and hard compound tyres are more long lasting. I think I will go for soft compound tyres next since I don’t put much mileage on the clock from mainly city driving.

Ya, the modern cars tend to have very very small margin to take up some load. Myvi third gen, carry 4 people (5 if include driver), just to pass by a bump, especially those which is build in such a way where the entry and exit of the bump is so narrow with the actual height is going to bang somewhere.

Can you do a video on tires - the best tire at each price range? Surely there tires that are costs different from different manufacturers, but has similar performance due to branding, manufacturing location? I guess this is purely from performance perspective, without considering tire noise, durability and wet performance
@robintan502
@robintan502 4 года назад
Unfortunately reality is ride comfort vs. handling is usually inversely related, and most "road cars" are a compromise. Most people wouldn't know this. Best compromise between ride comfort / handling for a car's setup are usually in the lighter performance cars, like the MX5s or the Alpines, or some may prefer the wallowly soft suspension tunes of most Japanese road car. If you need performance, handling and comfort at the same time, you will need to take it a step up in price to find cars that are fit with fancy adaptive (on-demand electronically or mechanically) suspension systems like the "Air" suspensions of the Germans, the "hydro-pneumatics" of the French and luxury marques, or the magnetic suspensions of the Americans. Then you can adapt ride comfort / handling depending on the need of the moment, but when it comes to this, you'll have another issue, long term reliability and long term maintenance costs (usually pops up after the warranty period). Why are older Japanese standard road cars so reliable? they're simple machines designed to ride soft, handle for normal drives, and doesn't include fancy performance upgrades, or sensor tech, or adaptive suspension setups. That said, in a few year's time you'll find the Japanese will be as unreliable as the Germans, French, etc, as they have too started to kit out their road cars with performance turbos, electronics, sensors and fancy suspension. Ask a Mazda, Lexus owner

@@YSKhongDriving thanks for the down to earth presentation of the concepts. Great material and aid for people beginning to learn about cars. I agree, when getting a car, best to start with a clear aim in mind, and then only proceed to test drive the cars, and settle for one that fit your criteria, then live with it. Hearsay doesn't help much, as a large portion so called mainstream "professional" car journos these days, e.g. T*pG*** etc. are just affiliate "salesmen", or their views and reviews steeped in personal biases. When we buy a car, we have to try it, and then embrace what the car is, compromise, cost and care

Fouling the wheel arches, or touching the shock absorbers, cannot find the rims, cost. Many factors, including ignorance
@jkgk8584
@jkgk8584 4 года назад
@ilovecars wider tyre means larger surface area, this will reduce the pressure of the tyre pressing against the road. This is why wider tyre will perform worse than narrower tyre (on the same car) in the wet, because the tyre is not 'pressing' hard enough through the layer of water on the road.

Hi Uncle YS, what's your opinion about changing new tyre. For rear and front, which one to change first if I could only afford 2 tyres rather than 4 tyres.
@YSKhongDriving
@YSKhongDriving 3 года назад
Some quarters say rear, but I would put the new tyres in front. Reason is the new tyres will be softer and easier to balsnce, and will provide better grip to the front, better for turnin in , so chance of understeer is reduced and all problems start with understeer.
@zhihaolooi8894
@zhihaolooi8894 4 года назад
did expensive tires has less lifespan compared to the cheaper one? due to the softer compound
@YSKhongDriving
@YSKhongDriving 4 года назад
Every tyre has a design objective. Softer compounds have a shorter life compared to harder compounds but have more grip. More grooves mean better wet grip but more rubber means better dry grip. Therefore every tyre is also a compromise.

Hi uncle... Did the displacement of tires influenced a handling? Which means is a width displacement and a width of tires.
@YSKhongDriving
@YSKhongDriving 4 года назад
Hi, tyres are measured by width and aspect ratio. If you meant the tyre width, yes, the grip is partially affected by the width. Other factors include the aspect ratio,tread pattern, rubber compound and even how the tyre is constructed.

Hi, on the topic of handling... Want to know more about adjustable coilovers with high speed and low speed compression as well as high speed and low speed rebound on how they effect handling... Is it possible to use these absorbers to achieve a extremely smooth and comfortable ride while still HV decent handling?
@YSKhongDriving
@YSKhongDriving 4 года назад
Shock absorbers can do what you set them to do. In other words even of they are adjustable, usually only the rebound is adjustable. And they stay at that last setting you used. Road conditions change all the time, but the settings remain. It is possible to set a compromise setting somewhere between good ride comfort and good handling - which basically means you should have just left it as standard. QED.
@imataquito005
@imataquito005 4 года назад
@@YSKhongDriving Can't it get better then standard or perhaps last longer? What I meant by least longer is that it will maintain the new shocks comfort for longer as I have found in that in one of my older vehicle; changing to a standard new absorber only made the car feel extra comfortable, handle nicer for about 2- 3 weeks before it settles down to a normal acceptable ride... 😅 It almost feel like the compression stroke became harder or more restrictive after the initial 2-3 weeks...

@enzedaxe4001
@enzedaxe4001 4 года назад
Brandon Wong these bars are to stiffen up the car so there is less flex to the chassis during cornering. During cornering your vehicle is like a towel being wrung dry, it twists. Stiffening up the chassis will help, on any part of the car. Just be sure these bars are solid and do the job rather than easthetic and just a placebo effect.

Whenever I go over a bump my car easily gets hit on the bottom middle because the rear wheel does not manage to raise before the front wheel got down, unless I am going very very slow nearly stopped. I wouldn't waste the money. You would be studying, and won't have much time to drive. You probably have a small car and it is not very powerful. You can spend the money elsewhere in a more useful way. Better to learn how to drive well. Just note most of the small cars we have in our videos are running standard suspension.
