The only non-spoiler thing I can say about the title track of Undertale is that the contrast with the rest of the soundtrack is very intentional.

Undertale really just exploded out of nowhere, it did do a lot of unique things at the time. The community grew so much due to fan projects and kept feeding itself and became this gigantic thing.

Toby Fox's friendship with Andrew Hussie, who he was living with when creating Undetale, and his contributions to the Homestuck soundtrack definitely helped Undertale have an audience right away. But it's popularity exploding into circles outside of that fandom was very unexpected and only due to it's own merits.

The last song you heard was Death by Glamour and you are correct, though I'm under the impression that as good as this song, 'Another Medium' is, it's a touch overlooked just because a lot of the themes are just so strong and iconic. Regarding "undertale", it's composed so well that even though you know nothing of the game, you can still find the emotion. Meaning, brace yourself when you do get around to playing it. When I played it, I had nothing to go on besides the initial promo vids. The reason everyone is so adamant about not spoiling you is because the game is kinda like a personality test: unique to you. And no one wants to take that experience from you just because of how much more you can get out of it. Even now, I'm revising this comment to make sure I don't rob you of anything 😂 in any case, I look forward to seeing the upload your eventual playthrough!

Another Medium is probably one of my favorite Undertale tracks...the vibes it gives is insane. Its like your teleported into a land you never knew you needed, if that makes any sense. It feels there can be no issue, your in a place of calmness, feeling the sun on your skin and the waves in the background...I could listen to this endlessly, its just so good.
@misirtere9836
@misirtere9836 8 дней назад
That actually makes a lot of sense in the original context of that song. Another Medium is actually a reworking of an older Toby Fox song that went unused in one of the previous projects he worked on, Homestuck. In Homestuck, you get teleported to a Land that is vital for your development as a person that you never knew you needed... and that Land is part of the Medium. So this one is, you know, Another one. The original version was called Patient. You can easily find "Toby Fox - Patient" on youtube and hear it for yourself.

Since you asked for comments on it - I played Undertale pretty much blind when it came out. I had played the demo and was absolutely on board back then but had no idea what to expect overall, and it was a tremendous experience. It's hard today to have avoided memes and even harder as a streamer - people will be mentioning things they don't think will spoil much, or tell you how to play cause they think they're cutting playtime down to get to the "good" bits (there are already a couple of comments here that are doing this), but it really is best as blind as you can be, experiencing what Toby put in as your *own* curiosity dictates in whatever moments grip you. Don't need warnings of what happens, don't need explanations of mechanics - just strap yourself in for wherever the ride takes you.

Undertale is a funded kickstarter game of a few thousands dollars made mostly by one guy that got so wildly popular that people made there own orginal undertale fan universe that then inspired fan games of those universes. Something I haven't seen anybody in the comments mention yet is that Another Medium is a song Toby has been working on for at least 3 years leading up to Undertale, originally being a song called Patient. I'm just gonna copy and paste from another video: "Patient is a remix of Doctor by George Buzinkai. It would later be reworked into Another Medium for Undertale's soundtrack, and the ostinato starting at 0:29 would also be used for Waterfall, CORE and Death by Glamour."

also man i love another medium, it's not talked about much because it isn't really a standout track in the ost but it's such a jam, and it's one of the few off the ost i actually have in like a regular playlist that i listen to often. additional context for it: it's more of an overworld theme compared to some others you've listened to that may have been battle themes etc. that may be why it sounds more ambient and chill. also, it's actually a song that he reused from something else he worked on, although he reworked it and changed it a decent bit. (the other song he reused in undertale from prior projects being megalovania, also reworked)

My absolutely fav song from Undertale is "It's Raining Somewhere Else" and I hope you listen to it sometime ❤️. For me I listened to the OST and bought the game halfway through my first listen. I absolutely love Another Medium and I'm glad you vibe to it. Everyone requested the battle songs that's why it Undertale feels so battle heavy 😂. Maybe when we request the whole OST you can finally play the game ❤️ At first Toby wrote "Undertale" with a heavier and more dramatic sound. But in the end he chose the real acoustic guitar that sounded a bit imperfect.

Undertale is by far the biggest emotional rollercoaster I've ever experienced from any media entertainment. I've never been so invested in a cast of characters or fictional world. It hooked me before I even knew it. It's hilarious, terrifying, adorable, and overall beautiful. Particularly it's use of rpg elements, video game principles, and the player's psychologically and turns them all their heads. It's impossible to fully elaborate on everything that makes this game so special without spoiling everything. You just have to see for yourself.

another medium is possibly my favorite song in the ost. you do *not* hear it for a short time, it's possibly the longest dungeon in the game. but it's so good you never get tired of it, and i kinda died inside a little whenever it got interrupted by the battle theme haha fun fact, the other title for the track "undertale" is "his theme". it's the theme for a certain character who's kinda the catalyst of the whole story. the game came out in 2015 and yes, it was an instant success out of nowhere. the internet would not shut up about it for a couple years haha, it's wild to me that you managed to avoid that

Also 4:51 is accurate! Ear hairs actually do exist, and their vibrations are what sends signals to your brain, though I don't recall if they're just for balance or if ear hairs are also involved in hearing.
@Laezar1
@Laezar1 Месяц назад
Ear hair are a big part of what allow you to hear actually! and they don't regrow, and get damaged by loud noises which is why you can get permanent ear loss from listening to music too loudly for extended period of times. (and they don't have pain receptors so you wouldn't feel it). Take care of your ears folk! Edit : as far as I'm aware they're not involved in balance, balance uses gravity and liquid in the inner ear. It's the same mechanism as a bubble level.

Undertale was a little indie game that blew up so hard it got cameos on Super Smash Bros, and as for why... I think it's the sheer earnestness of everything, from the art to the music to the story itself. Like you said the first few tracks sounded 'troll-y' but in context they come off very differently. Also people have mostly recommended you boss themes which... The majority of the time you'll hear area themes and trust me, they have a VERY different vibe~ XD I had actually heard of Undertale before I played it: namely I read something about one of the bosses on Tv Tropes that had me curious about the game's mechanics, heard GlitchXCity's remix of Heartbreak which I really liked (and was very curious about the fanart image of) and read the game's official blurb on kickstarter, but other than that went in blind and I am SO GLAD I did so as the game (much like my equally beloved games *Ghost Trick* and *In Stars and Time* which I would highly recommend if you ever have the time) is very much one where knowing as little as possible going in is to the player's benefit

About the "rules" people are asking you, it's not only about avoiding spoilers, but the fandom can be very... intense. An example: Marcomeatball played it on stream and got harassed by some people. It was insane and made him stop streaming it. I think it also fault of how a big success Undertale was, especially for younger audience that were not into game culture before. So they just don't know how to behave.

I first learned about Undertale because it won GameFAQs best game of all time poll at the end of 2015 (beating out Smash Bros Melee which I wasn't thrilled about). But, it got my attention since a lot of people seemed to love it (This was just right after the game was released and I'm guessing some of it was meme voting though. For instance L-Block from Tetris won the best character of all time in 2007.). I still didn't end up picking it up until I saw a streamer I watch play it a few months later. I probably watched for 5 minutes and I knew I had to play it. I had one aspect of the game spoiled for me, but it didn't really impact my enjoyment of it. I think people blow the no spoilers thing out of proportion for Undertale, but I think people telling you how to play it while you play it can ruin the experience.

So, in all honesty, I played Undertale only this year, after knowing its existence from day 1 in 2015, but I had literally dodged the game for 8 years only to be won over from a character in the game I saw in a YT video LMAO (I get won over quite frequently if I like a character's design) And to be completely honest-- despite not being at all 100% blind bc I knew story beats, elements, characters because of my best friend being obsessed with it, it was still such a shock- it was nothing like I had imagined- not what I though it was for 8 years and I deem it a literal masterpiece. It's also prompted me to actually finally learn music. I had been wanting to for so many years but never had the push- but let me tell you, when I heard this games soundtrack, I had to get into it. A slow work in progress but I'm getting there >:)

I was just randomly searching for interesting indie games on steam the day after undertale launched . I saw the games steam page and simply thought "I need to play this imediately". I just thought the game would be hilarious but the game was way more meta, and filled with minute details than anything I had ever played. The game is simply an experience, good or bad. It is just a little indie game after all, it may not blow your socks off if it's not what you're looking for, and don't feel pressured to love it.

If you give this game a shot, it's nice and short! And going into Undertale blind in 2024 is something of a rarity, I'd think. This game certainly changed my life, even if that sounds dramatic. I played it blind shortly after my father passed away, right when it released, and that caused it to affect me a bit more. The OST feels closely linked with the narrative which is why I love it so much, and it uses games as a medium to tell its' story in ways that were seldom seen before.The writing in this game is stellar which is why playing blind is important. I wish I could forget the game and play it again, but Deltarune has been fantastic so far and I'm excited for the future chapters to release.

I played Undertale blind, and I went in with very few expectations because it just looked like this little 8-bit adventure game. I did not understand at the time that I was about to get into the most transformative and emotional journey's of my life. Each and every one of the massive cast of characters somehow manage to be individually meaningful and explore different themes from one another. A true piece of modern art, mostly from the mind of one man. Which is largely why the community has become so divisive and this set of "rules" has been developed around streaming the game, because this small little indie game genuinely touched their hearts and makes them way too defensive of it, leading to this perception that you can somehow play the game "wrong" in their eyes, because they're afraid that you will now not get the same incredible experience from it that they did. But Undertale is amazing no matter how you go about it, so just play how you want.

Undertale is absolutely a masterpiece worth experiencing as blind as can be. I experienced the game almost completely blind in 2023. I only knew a couple of spoilers but managed to stray away from all music, somehow. All I can say is that when I finished the game... I was hit with the most profound sense of emptiness. I always find it interesting how music gives people insight into games. When a game can give you a feeling for what it is about, what scene it is trying to portray, through the music, I think that is a mark of successful writing. If you ever play Undertale, do it for yourself. I found it a very personal game. Of course I'd love to hear your opinions on it, but decide for yourself if you want to do it. Recommendations for songs from the Undertale soundtrack to give you a different feel for the game: Ghost Fight & Dummy! (these are pretty much a pair), Snowy, and Here We Are I feel like Undertale has one of those soundtracks with a song for every occasion.

Undertale itself really kind of came out of nowhere, apart from the Kickstarter and the fact that there was a demo of the first area, but it wasn't Toby Fox's first foray into making games! Before Undertale hit the scene, Toby had previously been making music for _Homestuck,_ actually, and before that, he dabbled in making romhacks of Earthbound, one of his biggest inspirations. One of his most infamous romhacks of Earthbound, colloquially known as "The Halloween Hack", was really REALLY edgy and gritty to an almost comical extent, but it's very easy to look back on it and see Undertale's DNA in the way it told its story and subverted some tropes. That romhack was also where Megalovania first originated! He composed it originally for The Halloween Hack's final boss fight, haha

This is a bit random, and would be a bit different from the average game you cover on the channel, but I'd love for you to react to a couple of songs from the Katawa Shoujo game soundtrack - it's a super indie game (like, I'm talking completely novice random people from online messageboards coming together to release it fully for free after years of work) from 10+ years ago now, and is very story heavy (being a "visual novel") but it's finally getting an official steam release in just a couple of days now, so there's an uptick in attention now and it's a super nostaglic game for MANY people, and covers great themes as a game itself. The songs I'd definitely recommend would be Wiosna (the main menu theme) and Parity (a bop) or maybe Concord (a very pleasant song). Maybe Ah Eh I Oh You for a more left field song.

(NO SPOILERS) The reason Undertale has this air of mystery and the reason you should play it is because it subverts a ton of video game and rpg standards. Its extremely meta while still taking itself seriously and providing you with an emotional gameplay/story experience. Also fun fact, Toby fox, years before making undertale, dreamed the ending to DELTARUNE, was like "I gotta make a game that ends that way, but i dont know if I'm capable of making a full videogame that ambitious, so let me do a test run" That test run was Undertale. This man is fucking insane.

I think something to consider is that Toby Fox was highly influenced by Earthbound/the Mother Trilogy, and I'm not sure what to recommend to play first. Personally, I think it is a good thing to not look up any spoilers for any of these games and experience them for yourself. I played Undertale around when it came out. I knew previous projects by Toby Fox but hadn't really paid attention to the previews and such at all, so all I really expected was something kinda trippy and probably Earthbound-esque with really good music. I underestimated the heck out of it. It felt special, very much like it was aimed at a particular community and type of person. I had no idea it could end up as this massive runaway success, but I'm happy something so weird got recognized for how good it was, and found a wider appreciation in the world. It didn't just appeal to those communities, it launched countless new ones.

My brother recommended to play it. 💪 My first, blind playthrough of Undertale was emotional, musical adventure. It was full of suprises and was so very, very fun. In current time i have 310 hours of Undertale gaming in steam, still love this game. I totally recommend you to play it totally blind, that really is best way first time. 😃👍

another medium is an overworld theme which is an underrated banger. i love it, and personally i think to fully appreciate it, one must listen to both Another Medium and CORE, another overworld theme connected to AM they're both bangers

Undertale honestly has ALOT going for it on a base level. Without saying much its a subversion of rpgs but also of video games itself at the same time somehow without conflicting. Being heavily based on earthbound, which in itself is a hilarious nuanced completely alienated take on rpgs for its time some 20 years before it. Undertale still managed to do the same with just an indie developer 2 decades after. Its more of a transcended piece of medium when it all flows together at times. Theres just a ridiculous amount of reasons to like it. Let alone its music being MIND BOGGLINGLY high quality for again, on guy making it alongside the game, characters, dialogue, systems etc. Being historys most successful indie game of all time with little resistance from it having something for almost anyone to sink their teeth into. Its more of an experience than just a game.

It's been years, but I'm certain I was spoiled in some way what the game entailed but most certainly one of the bosses in the game. The one who is associated with Megalovania. After a bit, I gave the game a try. It was a pretty interesting experience that I can't really say much about because you kind of have to experience it yourself.

If I remember right, he named the song "Another Medium" because the song was actually originally written for another medium (Homestuck I think?) but didn't get used, and he liked it so much he put it into Undertale. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong on that, I haven't looked that far into the Toby Fox composition lore lol I just remember hearing that somewhere. I'm not going to say much about "Undertale" because of how the song plays in the game but I will just say to answer your question about how it felt experiencing it for the first time: it was one of the few moments in any video game that actually managed to make me tear up. When you play through it yourself someday, you'll probably understand. I really don't think Undertale music was meant to be appreciated without first playing through it, because the music has such a particular feeling and emotion to it that can only really be conveyed as you're experiencing it with everything else. Toby kind of built his game around the music. Even the battle music, the fights follow the same flow around it. I think it's why people have clung to it so well. I've said this before and I'll say it again: music makes the game. You could have a game with mediocre gameplay and terrible graphics, but if the music is super memorable, people will remember it.

The beta version of Another Medium was an unfinished Homestuck track called Patient (which itself was a remix of an existing Homestuck song, Doctor) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HNdCAUpmXws.html The name is probably a reference to the Medium, a location from Homestuck.

I wanna present a bit of a counterpoint to the voices saying that Undertale is just, a really super-good game. It is, but if you’re going into it expecting this just Super-Good Game, you might be disappointed. What makes Undertale so good is its heart. There’s so much genuine love poring out of it, and the music is so powerful in conveying that love. It’s such a personal and genuine game that you will enjoy it if you vibe with Toby and his ideas in general, but if you don’t, you might not be able to get into it.

I sadly didn’t get to play it completely blind… I watched a few people play the very beginning, to the point that I discovered a core aspect, which I may have otherwise not realised on my first playthrough… I think I may I have heard about certain specific ways to play the game too… I won’t say any more than that, because I think it’s better to discover on your own… That said, I will say that it’s most likely worth playing through twice, the first blind, the second time with input from people who know the game. There’s a lot of neat secrets to find. I’d highly recommend playing the game for various reasons… And one of those being experiencing the soundtrack in context… Hell, even listening to the whole soundtrack at once can add to it as well, given that different melodies can appear in other tracks… Sometimes it’s simply a remix, but other times they are mixed into the background of other tracks or are sections in them… Either way, depending on how you play the game, and if you’re reasonably skilled, it can be relatively short… I expect you could do a single playthrough within 8 hours… Depending on how you play, you might not need a full second playthrough to get the best content… You could potentially be done with all the good stuff in maybe 10 hours or a bit less… maybe you could do everything in 15 to 20 hours if you really feel like doing it.

I played Undertale knowing basically everything about it. I'm not sure what to say about the experience because it was so long ago and I was a very different person. I played a single run of it, did the best I could, and then left the world to rest. Haven't touched it since, a bit like OneShot in that way. Just let the world rest.

If you do play this game on stream, ignore your chat. I love undertale, but despite everyone in the community saying you need to experience it blind, there will be people trying to police you into playing the game "correctly" on your first time with it, and it can really put a damper on the experience. As for the game itself, its an excellent game, and an excellent experience from beginning to end. The story and characters yank on the heartstrings pretty damn hard, and its music absolutely contributes to that. It was hugely influential for me when it released in 2015, and memories of my first experience with it have stuck with me ever since. The one and only "spoiler" I will give is the game requires minimum 2 playthroughs to get its full experience.

I suddenly started seeing fanart of it the week it came out, all I knew was it was a quirky indie rpg with funny skeletons... Needless to say it had a bit more than that.

I wouldn't say I played it without seeing anything, the only things I knew about were obviously Megalovania and sans image, but other than that I went completely blind. Imagine how I reacted when from that black and white skeleton figure and Megalovania the game turned out to be what it is.

I originally downloaded the game because of a screenshot with a supposed dialogue I saw, but it turns out it was a meme not a real screenshot of the game, so I thought I knew something going in, but didn't really know anything.

Man, Undertale (the song) makes me tear up every time, without fail. As to why you maybe shouldn’t stream the game, backseating can absolutely ruin the experience. I played it pretty late, so I wasn’t able to avoid some “pointers” online, but it was still a really special experience.

I did not play it blind, I had watched a certain Irishman’s playthrough first as it dropped. However even that still hit hard, and led into me wanting to play another game blind after he dropped his first video on… a game called Oxenfree. High recommendations from: Epiphany Fields and 7am

"Undertale" is accompanied by a revelation in the game plot that I won't even hint at. But it recontextualizes the entire angle of the plot and made my heart drop into my gut. It is a genuinely great work, on its own, but in context it ascends.

'Another Medium' is such a cool song and plays during a dungeon iirc, so just a shorter loop. It's been years since I played Undertale--played at the end of 2015, and those first notes of 'Undertale' still hit... and well, the whole song but when something starts and the emotion rises. I saw a trailer. I kind of knew the broad conceit of... how to play for want of avoiding spoilers, and that was it. It was gifted to me. Undertale's fandom exploded to the point of a bit offputting to me personally, so I'm glad I was gifted it. It's just a good game, funny, goofy, emotional and with a whole lot of heart. Practically speaking, it's also really cheap and with low tech requirements, so that makes it more accessible to a wider audience than your $60+ AAA games.

Another Medium is my favorite song in the game, not for any particularly strong reason. Just has a good groove, makes good background music when looped, with enough energy to keep me awake and focused on work without being too distracting.

Undertale music, lets go. I considered suggesting Undertale (the song) but some other peeps did it for me. Another Medium fits the title super well, it sounds alien and different. It's ominous but also funky which is a really cool combo. Not a lot to say about this one but it's dope. I love Undertale (the song) a lot, I haven't played the game but it has such a strong emotion to it that really hits. It takes me back to my childhood with family and that gets me teary eyed. The acoustic has a really comforting vibe, it's warm. This next statement from me is a very bold claim to make but I think this is easily one of the greatest melodies ever written. I love how this song adds more and more instruments as it continues, supporting the main melody. I like the little flute bridge, it gives me a moment to catch my breath.
