What disappoints me is how underrated LISA is despite how amazing the games were. Don't get me wrong, Undertale was great, but LISA was an outstanding game. It gave me more feels and laughs than Undertale ever did, and I found the characters were easier to develop empathy for. I'm surprised that it didn't blow up in popularity like UT.

I like Lisa more myself because of the more interesting setting and better humor, but it's not strange that Undertale is more popular. For one thing, it actually has fun gameplay. And the soundtrack is a far superior (not that Widdly 2 Diddly is bad or anything, he's just not in the same league).

Undertale is way softer and appeals to a larger, younger audience, while Lisa is way harsher and has extremely heavy themes, it's not unsurprising then that Lisa-despite being a uniquely great game-was not as popular as Undertale.

***** And at some point, you have to -just- talk about the game itself, and not just only bring it up with something else, not at all unlike the redheaded step child of the family you awkwardly bring to family reunions. At a certain point, its grating and annoying to just hear a game you liked come up in passing that is only brought up to talk about a different game entirely.
@Hifuutorian

***** Yeah, and I'd agree, but fans of LISA have rapidly approached the point where they are annoyed. I'd absolutely say they're two completely unrelated games that are being duct-taped together too, they might both be inspired by the MOTHER games, but they're so wildly different from each other and the inspiration, that I don't get why they are directly compared.

I absolutely adore Undertale, but I like Lisa more. The game was just so powerful an experience. Also, I think Lisa subverts the expectations even more, because people expect a game to be fair, where as Lisa feels as if the game and the entire world within it hates you.

Undertale was, by no means, deep. It's a great game with fun charachters and great humor, and it's gameplay is fun, but LISA has a more interesting plot overall and is way better at crafting it's story than Undertale. Undertale's character development is VERY simple, which is understandable, it's a comedy game, and what is there is very enjoyable. but the way charachters in LISA are written, I mean, holy shit, all of them are amazing. the 30 or so party members each get their own development, which is very nice. I'd rate LISA higher but undertale is a close second.

The feeling of actually playing as a character, where that character makes decisions that you can not stop, simply because thats in his personality, is something that video games have stopped doing with the rise of "Choose your path" RPG's. Astounding game.

Earthbound talk: 0:04 - 2:02 LISA talk: 2:03 - 3:53 Undertale talk: 3:54 - 8:47 This is unfair to the comparisons of the games. As you can see Undertale got *way* more time in the video than LISA and Earthbound and it wasn't a comparison, it was more appraisal. I love Undertale but I felt it was unjust to just look a LISA and not bring up its major selling points and just be like "It's so happy and cheery and great." Here's the thing, while Earthbound was a major inspiration for LISA, LISA is a whole different beast. It's supposed to be hard, annoying, and to put you into terrible situations. While Undertale and Earthbound are extremely similar and Undertale is *VERY* inspired by Earthbound, LISA is not supposed to be Earthbound. LISA is its own beast and hard, mean, disturbing, and doesn't like you, and that's why it's not Earthbound. It doesn't hold your hand and even if it did, after they're done holding it, they chop it right off. That's why so many people love LISA and you can't just say it's "unpolished" and "unfair" and then go praise Undertale. Sorry for ranting just thought this was unfair :/.

Jinley no critique to undertale yet could taking a shot of Lisa. which honestly story wise is a better game I dare say. temmie undertale is one or two step below the Stanley Parable and it's a critique of us normal the gaming mentality which is the completionist and it does it incredibly well. but it's incredibly meta to the point you are part of the Canon as the player. vs Lisa fantastic story that's ridiculous as well as Saturday's incredibly emotionally draining. where if you go far to be emotionally drained by undertale you're doing it to yourself.

Joel Bridge Super Bunnyhop glossed over LISA's expansive world building, great characterization, and well executed story telling combined with gameplay mechanics. Undertale only had one of the three things mentioned. Undertale failed too nail world building, which Earthbound had but Undertale didn't.

@MrJMB122 7 лет назад
Cylinder Tales of pills similar to Five Nights at Freddy's the lore is vague but he didn't throw the game even in the most meta you gotta find it. The game is meant to subvert players expectations and criticizing for the actions that goes over their heads much of fandom. Lisa has unreliable narrator of the stucco between Darkly comedic too tragic and uncomfortable. He gives you an memorable gang party members. A dark tragic story and a great fight with wonderful mechanics that will leave you drain for days.

Yeah no kidding. Lisa had like, almost no backtracking. Once you were done with an area, you were done with it unless you decided you needed old party members or something. The hubs are generally well designed and the difficulty is up there, but you're always given the tools to deal with it. And the unfair choices? That was the POINT. The game wanted you to feel uncomfortable, to make hard choices that affected you. Dingaling outright said he didn't want to make a game where you had choices that felt like the right choice, or the choice the game wanted you to make. Not to mention how dead wrong he was about Earthbound's difficulty. That game was brutal, and because it was so off beat it was often hard to tell what it wanted you to do or where to find it, and just....GAH. So much misinformation /rantrant.

Lisa certainly differs both from EB and UT in that while both those games have some dark stuff, it's all in the minority and overall experiences are fairly cheery and positive. Lisa on the other hand is just kind of depressing and even all the humor in it is pretty dark. Not that it's really a bad thing and I actually kinda prefer Lisa to Undertale. Even if the moment to moment gameplay of UT is better.

+lolmechy I'm with you on that boat, although I'm completely in the Lisa territory instead of teetering on it. I like Undertale, it's probably the best game I'll play this year, but it just didn't blow me away like Lisa did - didn't engross me like Lisa did. And where Lisa kept me invested from the moment you save Terry from Cheese Legs all the way to the very bitter end, I didn't get invested in Undertale until I reached Asgore's domain. Like, yeah, Undertale is quirky and homely and nice and full of warm moments but...I dunno. SBH's reaction to Lisa is the one I have to Undertale, and to its credit the most fascinating thing it has going is Toby's obsessive, almost neurotic attention to every minute detail. It's a cool change from everything else usually abandoning such pretense in favor of more grandiose setpieces. When my favorite moment of Undertale is keeping a piece of a snowman in my inventory all the way to the end of the game and having the game validate what I did, I feel totally vindicated. And that's the thing Undertale does best. But yeah, both Lisa and Undertale are great titles. I don't have quite the adoration for the later like a ton of people might, but it's definitely a fun game.

+lolmechy LISA was fucking great, I don't even want to read the comments because I'm expecting a lot of blind hate from undertale fans. It was definitely funnier, and felt more charming overall, but you could tell that the dev had a lot of restrictions to work with.

It's kind of odd how I somehow prefer Lisa to Undertale. Don't get me wrong, Undertale blew me away, it met its hype and then some and I loved every minute of it. Maybe it's the hipster in me that gravitates to harsh, unflinching and emotionally brutal stories that take a serious chance (and I have a fondness for black humour). I liked it a lot in the same way I liked Deadly Premonition and Nier, I came in not expecting much in terms of gameplay and was really pleasantly surprised in both the story and how the gameplay synced up with the story.

The short of it though is that Lisa and games like it (Nier, The Last of Us to an extent) are fairly emotionally complex and nuanced while a geno run feels kind of emotionally hollow (and this is very obviously deliberate and well done, but not great to play). The way this game handles decision making and depicting the consequences of those choices across subsequent playthroughs, the way this game handles multiple endings, the way this game gets so "meta" is absolutely excellent. A neutral run in this game felt more like Psycho Mantis than Psycho Mantis. A pacifist run felt more like an anti-war game than actual anti-war games. A genocide run felt more like psychological horror than some psychological horror games.

3:34-3:42 Uh... all of that's intentional. Did you think the title "LISA: The Painful" meant nothing? Items are supposed to be hard to purchase in bulk because it's the apocalypse. You have limited resources, and so you have to pay careful attention to how you use what little you can get. The hard bosses are there to beat you down. They aren't even just hard to beat, they can also do... let's say permanent damage to your party which is something meant to make the bosses strike fear directly to the player. Lastly, NO DUH THERE'S UNFAIR SITUATIONS. LISA's world hates you. Dealing with the terrible results of unfair situations and making painful choices is an integral part of the experience in LISA. You're not supposed to be able to come out of it all unscathed because life just isn't fair, especially when the world's gone to hell. LISA would be nowhere near as impactful without the pain and suffering. I know and understand that LISA might not be for everyone, but how does anyone play through LISA and miss the point by such a huge distance?

(by the way, im not saying bunnyhop is doing this mistake, he clearly understands the games are different in the video, Im just discussing how exactly they're different here) (Also, spoilers about each of the three games here in their own paragraphs, skip em if you didn't play em. (You really should play all of em ) ) *Earthbound* is earnestly innocent. Its a game clearly made for kids, with a story from a kid's perspective. You are gonna save the world, you are taking a few first timid steps into the world of adults, making friends along the way. The villain trying to take over the world is your next-door neighbor kid. Its all this somehow small-scale adventure that still has a world-saving scale. It reminds you of playing pretend outside as a kid. Its basically that, really. Its got a few occasional spooky moments, and gets very spooky in its last moments, but those last moments is really the only time it completely steps out of the bounds of its own tone. Its not even that bad there, just raises the stakes for an intense final combat scene. Its not a game that really makes you uncomfortable at any point, except maybe that combat finale. It subverts expectations a little bit, but is very gentle with it in general. I don't think the words "kill" and "death" even appear at any point in that game. *Mother 3* has a more of an edge than Earthbound does. It feels like a game developed in part for the folks who played Earthbound a few years before, and grew up a little since. Its still very similar in its tone and humor, but there is a clear shift happening. *Undertale* is a grim game using innocent visuals subversively. Its not meant to be for kids, its visuals call back to old games, and hopefully to make you fight and kill enemies without thinking too much about it until the very end, when it puts it in your face and dares you to play again the "right" way. I mean it straight up starts with a cute little flower turning into a spooky monster screaming about killing. Since that's at the very start of the game, its not trying to "trick" you exactly, its just supposed to be a contrast. I'm sure kids still love it, but they are not the target audience: people who played JRPGS and other games as kids and who grew up since are the real target. The game's theme seems more like a direct critique of games as a medium, that its odd how gameplay tropes can get you to act without thinking, making presumptions about what the game expects from you. Kind of like spec ops: the line here, but maybe in a more general sense. Like, when you play a turn based RPG, your moral fibre goes on autopilot during combat: you expect random encounters to just be a source of experience points, a resource. It seems to just be saying, combat in games sometimes turn into this mindless exercise that has no relation to the actual game world, and its a bizarre trend we should question more. Its playing with that idea, and making it into a self-imposed difficulty level of sorts. *Lisa* is a very grim game. Its really damn dark. The humor in it comes through more like finding islands of fun and interesting characters amidst a world of despair. Its not trying to be a game for kids at all, that has nothing to do with its goal. The player isn't innocent, and the game's goal in some ways is trying to protect a little girls' innocence, and failing at it completely at every turn. The games' first section is covered in bloody corpses, which I first thought felt a little bit...childish, like in those early violent newgrounds flash games kind of way, but it did make a good job of making its tone very clear, so no one is completely sucker-punched when the actual adult themes come up later. The game's themes are about sacrifice and how some situations have no possible good outcomes, how sometimes there is just no way to prevent people from getting hurt. Sometimes, life just sucks, and you just have to make an impossible choice, and someone is gonna hate you either way. Lisa revels in death as a game mechanic, where Undertale does the opposite. Lisa treats people as a resource you spend, treats death like an inherent part of your game. You don't choose if someone dies or not, you more often just have the horrible task of choosing who dies. In Lisa, you CAN'T save everyone, and that's arguably the game's point. If you played Undertale, I don't need to point out how really damn different that is. In some ways those two games are complete opposites, like arguing against one another.

+FrankieSmileShow Haven't played much of Earthbound and never played Mother 3 (and have sadly been spoiled silly on both), but I really like your comparison of Undertale and LISA! Helped me gather my own thoughts. I love the shit out of both games (and their soundtracks!), and while prior to playing Undertale I guessed that both were very different but had similar cores, so to speak; as it turns out, I was wrong. They're really fucking different, but that's what makes them interesting to compare and contrast (even if it seems some are annoyed that LISA recently only seems to come up when it comes to the Undertale comparison). Trying to look at it purely objectively, Undertale definitely has the edge on LISA in terms of polish, and the gameplay is overall more enjoyable; but the two are so different in spite of their apparent similarities that... okay, honestly, I lost track of what I was trying to say there. They're both really fucking great games and anyone looking at this comment who hasn't played one or the other should absolutely look into giving them a whirl (unless you don't have the stomach for LISA's content, which is perfectly fine).

+EggmanDrCuckooMan Im not sure if Undertales' gameplay is really more enjoyable. Its certainly different... but there's such a large lateral shift in the approach to combat and longer term strategy, its just apples to oranges in most respects I think. Its certainly a more pleasant game to play overall, but LISA is basically the FEEL BAD rpg, so theres no big surprise there. Its downright hard to play at moments. Undertales' strengths are its little battle moments and its narrative bits both in and outside combat. There are fun little things happening all the time and you keep getting fun new surprises. Lisa is almost closer to a survival horror game in its approach to combat. Its something I home in on because im working on a game with a similar approach to battle. Lisa is all about exploration granting you resources to manage, which then give you different options in combat. The combat is more about having enough stuff to get through them than about being skillfull. In a way, its like the combat is meant to test your skills at exploration. You have mags, healing items, bottles which can have different uses, some of those uses give you the bottle back while others lose them forever... Party members are also a resource, and sleeping at a camp to recover life has its share of risks, so its kiiiind of like a limited resource too...And since the tough decisions you make during the game affect your resources in a big way, it makes those decisions have an impact on the battles too, it really connects that story with the combat, saves it from feeling like two parallel little game halves. So LISA might have a more complex longer-term gameplay, but Undertale's short-term gameplay is a lot more engrossing. Those bullet hell patterns to dodge in battle, and the way every fight essentially turn into a little dialogue tree puzzle moment, its a lot stronger there. Lisa is also this big ol world to explore with a bunch of different paths, which has its share of advantages and disadvantages compared to Undertale's more straightforward layout. I don't feel Lisa really has significant problems... it had some early on, with that cliff you could fall down from and then had to restart the whole game over. And the aforementioned kinda silly excess of blood and gore in the first parts. Other than that, maybe a few bits are a little too hard... Theres a lil bit of punishing backtracking here and there... but thats about it, its just pretty solid overall. Undertale on the other hand has some big weaknesses. Mainly the level design, the puzzles. The combat is great, but the levels are pretty poor. A lot of em should have just been shorter. You feel like you're going through the motions mostly. Lisa's level design was very simple too, but somehow felt more engrossing. I'm not entirely sure why. I don't have great level design chops myself, maybe id be able to analyze the problem better if I did. Maybe the more explorey aspect of LISA's level design worked better for me. Maybe its just because it has more stuff to find and collect all over it, who knows. So yeah, apples and oranges really. They're just very different, even though they are of the same big genre and have one big inspiration in common.

+FrankieSmileShow I think that's sort of the aspect that gets missed in a lot of games like these. And that's the perspective of the creators. They were inspired by Earthbound, but kept growing, and now they've made a game with an entirely different perspective entirely. Or maybe perspective isn't the right word. They made a game they plays to their tastes. The message isn't so much for the audience as it is for the creator himself. They made the game they wanted to see, with the caveat being that they wanted the game to be close to Earthbound as they've come to understand it. The shortest way to say it is to say that the creators of Undertale and LISA made games telling adult stories for themselves and other adults, or maybe other Earthbound fans who'd grown up. The shift you mention in Mother 3 trends this way and I think Undertale and LISA are children of the same effect. The original game was created for children, as you mentioned, and the others weren't. They informs the underlying structure more than possibly any of the creators may have known. If you're thinking to yourself "I want to make a game that captures the absurdity of the Mother series" then you've already left the park to an extent. George even mentions it in the video. That's the appeal of Earthbound. It's a simple idea, mostly devoid of cynicism or understanding of consequence. The other two games are almost predicated on consequence at a baseline.

@David Kasparec undertale's story is pedantic, naive and doesn't stand up to the critique of real life. Sure the subversion of slaughtering all life within an RPG setting is great and all but when the entire premise of your story uses this as its fulcrum to explain the plot, it makes it completely shallow. As such it has literally no applicability to the world outside of itself. While most people go their whole life without killing someone, there are times where you will genuinely have to defend yourself to the death with there being no room for a misunderstanding like Undertale would imply. Lisa on the other hand provides characters who have gone through genuine problems in their life, and places them within your hands to come to make a decision in regards on how to come to the best path toward resolving these issues of betrayal, vindication, the desire to protect your family, and abuse from your own family. This is not a game for children, as most kids would not understand these hard questions, let alone be capable of approaching a solution toward them, so instead they gravitate toward the mindlessness that is the idealistic world that undertale sharts out. In conclusion, I personally believe that you would walk away from undertale with far less learned than what you'd get from Lisa. Lisa isn't dark simply just to be dark, but rather because the setting is driven to it. Aside from the occasional joke or jab of dark humor, the game is riddled with characters that have clear motives and needs that generally conflict with the super safe and petty world that we comfortably find ourselves in day after day, and generally speaking these needs are going to be filled or they're going to die trying to fulfill them either as a hulking mutant, or as a dead bandit.

Neither is Earthbound, Lisa, OFF, Spongebob: Attack of Bikini Bottom, Half Life 6.2, or a Mario x Sonic fan fiction. Nothing is perfect. Pointing out no flaws in Undertale is a bit scummy. Wait you found no flaws? You're lying. While there may be little, you must at least point out one. You pointed out so much for Lisa, but none for Undertale. This video should have really been 'Undertale and it's Earthbound Connection' because honestly story wise LISA is nothing like Mother. Even if you didn't enjoy it and spent several more minutes arguing why it was shit compared to Undertale, I think just rushing through it like it's a foot note was much more inflammatory to LISA fans than disagreeing with them. Especially since the title implied LISA and Undertale would have been talked about equally as much. Perhaps you could go back and do an analysis of LISA itself later? I've played both undertale and lisa.... and calling undertale more polished than lisa is quite unfair IMO. yes, undertale is very good. However, this review is very biased against earthbound and especially lisa. Lisa is SUPPOSED to be difficult. Ding along even stated that the choices are supposed to not be easy for the player to make, he wanted them to feel as painful as Brad did. It works, and as for the backtracking... It felt a lot more draining in undertale because at least Brad could ride a bike and Frisk moves sooo slow, even compared to brad when walking... oh let's not forget how more emotional LISA's soundtrack was throughout the entire games, yes there were funny parts... However, undertale's themes were more associated with chip tunes. .. Both worked for their games but I honestly felt a lot more engaged with brad and his struggle, rather than frisk and their escape... This has nothing to do with any of the specific endings as 1 theme in each game stood out to me, scaring me.... 1 is a major spoiler, the other... is just disturbing.. and appears in the most horrible of places. that being blood for sex and so cold. overall, I'm quite balanced on these games... and I feel like those biased opinions aren't giving Lisa much of a chance.

LISA was amazing, and one of the most unique & thought-provoking RPGs I've played in recent memory. It alternates fantastically between being darkly hilarious, shockingly disturbing & emotionally devastating. I'm going to admit something, LISA is unfair, and that's one of the things Ding uses to sell the game. But we need to see that it's Dingalings first full game (yes Undertale is Toby's first game too, but Game Maker is better than RPG Maker and gives more options for designing the game), his first game was a Yume Nikki type of game (LISA: The First), but it was like one or two hours long, so for me The Painful is his first full game. The bosses are unfair, unless you got an strategy (most of the times at least), at the first boss (where you get the bicycle) if you have firebombs, you can beat it with a bit of work, with the hair guys, the same, use fire attacks on the hair, then go for the guys, and the only really unfair situation I can remember (the first roulette play) it let's you savescum if you want to, it really let's you, if you choose the exit and die option, you can load the save and try again without getting any party members killed. Also, the story, it's simple, yes, it's like the princess kidnapped story situation, but instead of running to you the princess kicks you in the balls and then runs further from you. Maybe I'm just rambling nonsenses because I like LISA a lot, but in my opinion, it's unfair a lot less that it seems, and it shouldn't make you not buy the game because you're afraid that it isn't fun, if you see the Steam forums and let's plays, the only people that ended not liking the game was the people that choosed Pain Mode, that mode is truly unfair if you don't know what to do, as save points literally explode after saving, so limited saves. It also haves more bosses, so expect a lot more of your party member to get killed. Although The Joyful has really unfair bosses too... Maybe Dingaling has a really problem when balancing games... Also Undertale... I haven't played it yet, I only know that if I hear one more person saying it's perfect, I'm going to die of repetitiveness. But it looks fun and original, I'll admit it.

No clue if I hit a crit by accident (if than it was beyond unlucky timing since it was the only one I did in the entire demo) but I could only cringe through the following sequence where the game than tried to make me feel bad for something I had no way of knowing could happen.

***** Well I tried talking a bunch of times till the message was on cycle - I am sure there is some way around it. My point though is that the death was kind of cheap since the game didn´t establish before that one could do 10x the damage out of nowhere but it did establish that one has to bring some monster on very low health to get past them without killing. It kind of ruins the impact since instead of feeling like I killed her I just felt like the game pulled a fast one on me.

I enjoyed Undertale a lot but after a while the gut punches in the story wore off, while most of the story in Lisa actually got more dark and stuck with me the longer I thought about it. The game is actually a lot more like earthbound than you would expect, it just mixes the oddness of the EB flavor with the perverted degeneracy of olathe. Aside from just being a great game, it's a game design marvel that's well worth a more in depth criticism than we've been getting as publications can't actually discuss it with spoiling the game for the audience. There is a lot to talk about the game's precise control of expectations to fuel both its humor and its drama, its use of game mechanics to convey the emotional state of the characters involved, and its very deliberate aim for the player to never see all of its content as part of a metacommentary on how games should be enjoyed. I mean, the tutorial section alone. Watch some blind Let's Plays of the Ruins and you can see the genius of that intro as the icy cynicism melts away from their hearts or the sheer horror of realization of what they've done without that safety net of "the game made me do it." And, of course, after the intro you get your first real introduction to the game's humor, right when you need it most, marrying the dad jokes with the warm sentiment we associate them with and using it to build the characters as more than just comic relief without wallowing in melodrama. It's just too good to pass up.

I actually had a few problems with Undertale's nonviolence system. Mostly that the ambiguity of the battle system makes it very easy to interpret the enemies as deranged, totally unsympathetic psychopaths as they try to murder you while spouting puns or attempting to flirt with an eight year old child. Then there's the fact that every enemy in the game but Snowdrake and Shyren has an endless supply of identically-named identical clones ready to attack you until you scare them off by killing too many of them. That and Undyne was insufferable. The game literally broke its own narrative and supplied Undyne with information it was physically impossible for her to possess just so the game could give her a moment to guilt-trip you. "Self-defense? HA! You didn't kill them because you HAD to. You did it because it was EASY." That line makes literally no sense unless you accept that she somehow knows about your time-traveling powers. If she doesn't know about this (and she doesn't, only Flowey and to a lesser extent Sans know) then this is totally nonsensical and it paints her as a deranged, totally unlikable lunatic who is willing to believe literally anything about anyone if it allows her to follow her king and still sleep at night. This woman could convince herself to murder an *infant* her perception of reality is so malleable.

So basically, LISA is a horrible game with slow mechanics and gameplay and a lot of backtracking and is very sad, and Undertale is a game that is absolutely perfect in every way, and has absolutely no flaws at all? I love both of them but like... damn man. Undertale has it's own flaws and it's not very deep, LISA has superior writing and actual meaning, despite the sometimes unenjoyable gameplay. They are, for the most part, equal, and I don't understand why people just ignore LISA and turn towards Undertale only. the into to LISA is sets the mood wonderfully, and is powerful, highlighting the tragedy of abuse, while Undertale starts with a fucking monologue. it's upsetting how much LISA is swept under the rug.

When I look at criticisms of Undertale, I think they're missing something here: The things that are frustrating in this game have a point; the things that look like they are flaws, like the monotony of grinding needed for the genocide route, the difficulty in general, the spike in difficulty against bosses in said route, the tiny inventory space, etc, they all have a purpose. A payoff that developer intended to accomplish. Has this game been hyped to much? I think so. But I still love this game. And its kind of refreshing that something like this has captured the attention of so many people and that it has a chance to stand against the AAA-shlock that's been permeating the industry for the last 4 years.

+YourMumsGrannysPetDolphin I don't understand exactly what you're getting at here? If you play the game as a pacifist the characters treat you as a friend and the story is pretty happy and feel good. If you play the game murdering every character you meet, all the characters treat you like a murderer for killing your friends and the psychopathic antagonist encourages you for your actions. Were you expecting the game to applaud you for slaughtering people blindly?
@ms.fortune6901
@ms.fortune6901 8 лет назад
+Reaverbot I feel that, from a gaming standpoint, the whole "punishing for playing genocide" is complete and utter bullshit. It's a game, and you as the player should be allowed to play it how you want (within reason, obviously you can't decide to start a new life in the underground at the beginning of the game due to designer choices). The grinding is somewhat understandable, as you do need the levels to beat the final boss, but corrupting your save for trying out the other ending? That is not cool. I understand it is trying to tell me that murder is bad, but the whole experience was heart wrenching enough that the added corruption is pointless and only serves to lock people out of true pacifist for no reason other than "you did a bad thing, now go sit in a corner."
@Reaverbot
@Reaverbot 8 лет назад
Ms. Fortune I honestly think some people are just weirdly way over sensitive about called out by something in a silly video game tbh. You aren't being "punished". The game continues to remember what you did, yes, but it doesn't do anything negative that you didn't already do by your own volition. You aren't prevented from playing again, the game doesn't impose penalties of any kind on gameplay; nothing changes adversely beyond in a story manner, because -you- advanced the game's story in a certain manner. And at that point what do you care? You played the game in a very deliberate way that brought you to literally exterminate every last living thing in it. Does the changed picture at the end honestly affect you that much? And ultimately, if it really -does- you can easily delete a single file and the repercussions are entirely undone from you and you are able to escape what you did.

This video was a little too Undertale... over half of the video was spent talking about it. I mean for the video to appropriately talk about the drawing connections between the three titles, maybe actually spend time talking about the base game. Give a polished short review of each of them before haphazardly confessing you love for Undertale. Also a lot of the "negatives" mentioned for Earthbound and Lisa were their selling point. To praise Undertale for its humor, but say Earthbound was weird for the sake of weird is really showing your bias. I mean you can play a mini game called Thunder Snail and date a skeleton. Earthbound's "weird" serves the very same purpose Undertale's does its how the two titles develop character. Lisa the Painful was supposed to be painful. Having people die and stay dead was its innovation, and for the few that could handle the games brutality they could really grow to appreciate the gravity of the game. Lastly if your going to talk about the positives and negative of Earthbound and Lisa maybe do the same for Undertale. They were all neatly crafted experiences but they all had their faults and strengths.

+MultiCool55 To be fair, you can kill random monsters & leave the unique ones alone. Sparing the meaningless monsters is just pointless. I don't think it has to be as black & white as "pacifist or genocide". You can kill some & leave others living. Simple.

@aestheticgarbage6671 8 лет назад
+BowditchXD It isn't pointless. If you want a crappy ending then yeah, kill off the randomers. But a pacifist run completely changes the game ending and some of the events in the game. It doesn't have to be black and white, there are lots of neutral endings you can get, but the pacifist route is the most important to the game.
@GingerJack.
@GingerJack. 8 лет назад
This game doesn't deserve much of the praise it gets. There's really only one way to play, pacifism, you are punished for playing any other way. The combat is pretty boring considering you have only one move, no strategy, and even pacifism is reduced to "Ok, which one do I need to press to get him to spare me?" The characters are really flat, I think only two of them are actually dynamic. It really relies on it's humor, which isn't a bad thing but without it, it would be a very tedious but easy bullet hell. Also, Toby Fox is not a writer and it really shows. It's a good game, don't get me wrong, but it's not the "10/10" everyone keeps screaming. It's a cute little 10 hour experience that is very much worth $10.
@SunsetSullivan
@SunsetSullivan 8 лет назад
Possibly bait but 1) Pacifism is not the only way to play. Genocidal changes the game a lot and neutral is different from pacifist. 2) There are multiple ways to solve each encounter- in fact, each enemy has at least 2 ways to spare it. Bosses and minibosses have only one though, though they are much more involved than the average duder 3) Your opinion- i think everyone, even a certain nerd dinosaur are very well written. I also found the game very funny, as do many other people. 4) is the game 10/10? In my book, yes, because I played the demo in 2012 or whenever, bought the game the literal MINUTE it came out, and beat it that same day. It exceeded my already high expectations.

No usual strategy of using a certain type of magic or item, waiting for a boss to change animation, etc. -Well, you're not gonna get very far by just saying "well in my opinion, the writing IS good." I loved Undertale, but I'll freely admit that it is by no means a perfect game. (SPOILERS BELOW THE BREAK) It hinges on the fact that it has a response to everything the player might try, up to and including reloading and restarting. Yet although it tries its best, it can't account for every possible thing that the player tries. If you kill Toriel after Genociding all monsters in the ruins, or strike a killing blow after getting her to stop attacking, it causes Toriel to denounce you with her final breath. But if you kill her under any other circumstances, she merely laments that she could not protect you. The game doesn't note how many times you tried acting, sparing, or fleeing before finally resorting to violence. And in the dialogue with Flowey at the end of the ruins, he never says anything to the effect of "You sure took your time. I was beginning to think you were a lost cause. But in the end, you finally realized that I was right." Or, take Sans' judgement of the player in the endgame. A player can defeat every opponent by whittling down their HP and sparing them (a strict "technical pacifist" run), or they can defeat them solely through ACTing (a strict "true pacifist" run); so long as you avoid outright killing, Sans will review your conduct equally favorably. This and several other binary conditions break down the otherwise immersive and organic atmosphere that Undertale weaves. If there is a sequel, I hope that Toby takes extra care to ensure that every possible form of in-game conduct is accounted for.

+And then I said " thechnically the game does take the "technical pacifist" stuff in mind, but in a very subtle way, as you notice how in the credits of the true ending the "enemies" you befriended can have phrases in either yellow or white, white meaning you didn't befriend them completly, and yellow meaning that they are your friends and would never hurt you (aka, they are sparable) but I agree, I would like to see a more developed game in said aspects because it does kinda breaks the feeling, but it was a really good first shot for Toby since is his first game too

+I'm Very Angry It's Not Butter Personally, I hated how the True Ending didn't have any variety on how you achieved it. If you score a perfect mercy run on Neutral, including sparing Flowey, you can just reload your old save file (which was supposedly destroyed) and do all the optional NG+ content right away, get to the Lab, and then face Asgore with a really unusual ending. That ending only makes sense if you restarted your game after NOT sparing Flowey. He should have had more dialogue along the lines of "You made a mistake sparing me, now look what you've done!" Considering there's no break between the Neutral Ending and this plot string, it really should have had some sort of difference to not utterly confuse and sequence-break the saintly players.

JakesFavorites I don't really understand where you're coming from. I did exactly the same thing you did, and it made perfect sense to me. After the Neutral Ending, Flowey gave you directions on how to achieve the Pacifist Ending. He claimed that he was turning over a new leaf, but this is a sociopathic trickster we're dealing with, so it's not at all surprising that he went back on his word. Flowey even explains to you why he's still jerking your chain after all this time; he wants you to never stop playing Undertale; he wants to keep you unsatisfied so that you'll keep trying to get the elusive happy ending, and thus continue to keep playing with him, because you're so much more interesting to interact with than those dumb NPCs.

Ever since I've watch Rick & Morty I've heard the term Cronenberg used to refer to a being quite often. Odd.

+treeghettox Screw that. Watch Videodrome, Scanners, Crash, and The Fly 2. THOSE are Cronenberg at his best.

+treeghettox The Fly, Videodrome and eXistenZ. Last one features an organic videogame console and a bone gun that shoots teeth!

eXistenZ was shit. It was easily the cheapest and flimsiest Cronenberg film. Felt like a syfy original.

FartMaster69 I've watched it like 10 years ago. All I remember is that crazy console and that awesome gun made of bones. Since VR is coming for real, I wanted to watch it again.

Hell yes. RAD. Love that game. I'm surprised to see it pop up in a video like this. It's one of the crazy little "hidden gems" that seems to have actually stayed hidden over the years...

Super Bunnyhop, has just become one of those new subscriptions I'm so glad I picked up and am enjoying everything they've produced as I dig through their archive.
