+Derpy Derp I don't see how that's relevant at all to this discussion. The second half of your post. Unless you mean this was a prelude before the big final fight.
+maplegal2000 I see how that could be confusing, and I'm not 100% sure either, but I think he was pointing out that Sans ended up written in such a way that he wouldn't want to fight you unless he felt he had no other option, and that would only occur in a genocide run. So in other words, the writing ended up making a pacifist battle with Sans make no sense when looking at Sans' motivations, and the OP was probably implying that the song might have been written before this decision was made, and thus cut alongside a theoretical Sans neutral/pacifist battle from the game in the planning phases. It's reaching a little, but it does make sense. It's certainly a possibility, but it is equally possible that Toby just wrote it up as a fun "What if" song or something for possible future use if he decides to work a bit more on the game in the future.
+Christopher Seraph (Icefox) You know what would make a battle with Sans make sense in a neutral/pacifist run? One: The Fight button isn't there, two: He doesn't actually attack, just make puns. And the ACT action is Make SkelePun. Yes, someone already said this(I think) but still, pun battles.
its trollish without being trollish.its trollish in the way that you cant hear it and it doesnt play in the fight with sans, but its not trollish because its called "song that might play when you fight sans".in the genocide run, when fighting sans, you're pretty much already taken over by chara,so chara is fighting sans, not you.hence why the song never plays.
+Joseph Mendez Seeing the people flail around helplessly in the flooded streets filled with ketchup touching the streetlights fills you with DETERMINATION
Ah, the Undertale OST: "Death by Glamour" "Live Report" "Megalovania" "Hopes and Dreams" ... *_"S o n g T h a t M i g h t P l a y W h e n Y o u F i g h t S a n s"_*
How about “bird that carries you across a disproportionately small gap”? Or “can you even call this a hotel I didn’t get a mint under my pillow or anything E”? The real classics.
In my opinion it's wrong to say that he "stole" a part of the Papyrus's theme because they are family, that's one of the things that show their relation, that they certainly have something in common as brothers. I think that's a cute detail.
this is sanses actual theme, meglovania is charas because shes initiating the fight, once she starts killing she turns into a monster, getting her own theme which is meglovania and it plays because you took the step twords sans, meaning YOU started the fight so YOUR theme plays
@@MrDiana1706 it is used. There's a variable called FUN (with conflicting info on what that stands for) that changes small things like which random npcs appear and such. Certain rare FUN values result in this playing instead of Megalovania, hence the title.
+Ooga Blooga The song is made for people only playing pacifist. they check out the soundtrack and find this piece which makes them wondering. Then they do a genocide run and shit bricks
Honestly, I think this song was originally going to be used in a neutral/pacifist fight against Sans, it still happens in the throne room, and instead of Sans fighting to kill you, he's fighting to test how strong you really are, to see if you're ready for Asgore.
Yeah he just does the toriel thing "Prove to me you're strong enough to survive" and when you get on 1 hp he stops fighting you and won't let you pass until you battle him again, if you try to attack him he just dodges and says "Woah kiddo, be careful, you almost attacked me, here let me help you" and he blocks your fight button
The song named "Sans's secret room" is a slowed version of the song named "it's raining somewhere", Wich is a slowed version of the song named "Sans", Wich is a slowed version of this. Toby is a fking genius
I could imagine this song playing in the Hardmode version. Like Sans takes you to Grillby's and there is only enough for one person. So you and him have a friendly spar for it. But he REALLY wants the food. So Sans doesn't hold back, and really tries to throw you off. But the smell of that food... fills you with DETERMINATION.
Imagine if this song shows up in Deltarune with an optional boss fight against sans or something. It would legitimately be one of the hypest moments ever
I too enjoy the thought of a single bone just below the hit box, unable to be hit, just ssssssssssssllllllllllloooooooooowwwwwwwwwllllllllllllyyyyyyyyyyy mmmmoooooovvvvvvviiiinnnngggg ppppppaaaaasssssstttt. As Sans regales me with what he had for breakfast that morning.
@@trogon4503 toby said that it was only going to have 1 ending. Edit: ok I forgot I made this comment and lately it's getting a ton of replies. Edit2: OK I GET IT SNOWGRAVE ROUTE EXISTS
The begining sounds like a rewind. Here's my wild guess: In non-Genocide routes in hard mode, he pranks you saying you failed the judgment and need to die, Megalovania starts playing, rewinds into this, ''you just got pranked, nerd''.
This would be where the song plays: Sans tells you about blue and orange attacks but is too lazy to explain it, so he demonstrates it in a fight and this song would play.
The peace or certain sounds played in a specific order that would make it enjoyable to listen to that there would be a certain chance of coming in contact with and engaging in a encounter with a skeleton with a blue jacket black shorts pink slippers, who happens to have the legal name of sans and place of resistance is snowdin town
Tophat cat but there are some things confirmed canon through that costume though, for example, we learn that Sans wears a white shirt (something that we don’t really know otherwise), and I don’t think Toby would approve any misinformation about Sans in the costume, so at least we know how Sans looks so people can stop making him shirtless. Nevertheless, you are right in the Megalovania part. It’s more iconic to UNDERTALE as a whole (and Sans) so it makes sense even though to whom the song is referring to might be another character. At least this mii costume helps the community to know how Sans is so that there is no speculation about how he looks.
megalovania isn't sans' theme, it's the player's. megalomania, or narcissism, indicates a lack of care towards others (seeing them as less than human) and exaggerated self importance. these drive the player to a no mercy route, disregarding the life and happiness of the monsters just to see the route to the end.
@@Garbo_trashcan The difference being that we actually have every reason to believe it's sans's theme, since in every other boss battle it's their theme playing
+Quick Man There was a video where this song was actually used. It is NoHitRun's 1.5 speed Sans fight. Assuming that that video wasn't edited, I assume that the only way you can get this music is by fighting Sans at 1.5 speed (use Cheat Engine to make the game run faster).
+Quick Man this was going to appear, but the boss was cut. there was a much easier sans in the neutral and pacifist run but toby cut it for some reason. Maybe it'll reappear in hard mode.
Just amazing how Toby added a "pacifist" version of Sans' theme, even though there is no fight in the game with him in the pacifist route, just for completion or just because.
71: A depressing song about How the king and queen lost 2 if their children in one night, the queen ends up having a divorce, and the king still yearns success in trying to free their race 72: OH MY GOD YOU GUYS IT'S ACTUALLY SAND UNDERTABLE
0:09 you can hear Gaster's Theme on the left side of your headphones. sans' left eye is the eye that glows. coincidence? i think NOT! edit: seriously, though. you can't mark this off as "un-intentional," when song making can be a very long and meticulous process. _ESPECIALLY_ for the songs for this game. Toby knew what he was doing with these songs. and also, just because the melody sounds different from Gaster's Theme, doesn't mean that it isn't his theme at all. if you put GT's original melody at 0:09, it obviously wouldn't even fit in that well. because of this, it would only make sense that the melody would have to sound different in order to fit into the song. just because it doesn't sound 100% the same as the original, doesn't mean that it _isn't_ the same song. that's like saying Heartache in Asgore's Theme isn't Heartache simply because it's sped up.
For those who cannot hear Gaster's theme: If you are wearing stereo headphones, it should play from your left. Put on headphones or earbuds if you have trouble. It plays at 0:10 - 0:17 and 0:25 - 0:33, listen to the high pitched notes. It's playing (low mid high mid) on repeat. Sound familiar?
+HeWhoEnjoysTehVids I'm more of thinking that this was originally going to be the boss song, but then he figured that he didn't like it that much. But since it was still finished, might as well show it in some form. Sometimes composers get results that do not please them at all.
+Chao's Playmate Gaming Know it? I played it till my fingers hurt! I pretty much spent my entire childhood staying inside and playing game like a total loser! A celebration to being losers!
What I find very interesting is that at the end of Papyrus's fight, * In my opinion * Sans is the one to lift you up over the big bone. The reason why I think this is because papyrus has never really demonstrated to me enough times that he has this power. Yet we se sans use this in the genocide route, and show signs of teleporting many times. Sans is a skeleton, Set on keeping the promise to Toriel. To fix any confusion, I think since Genocide is a different timeline entirely, Perhaps sans was doing something else, What that thing is, not sure. but if the butterfly effect holds true, he could have been anywhere, consulting the king, looking for undyne? who knows.
Sen M I Know right? I mean we see a clear demonstration of sans power in Genocide, And it is sort of silly that you sort of just lift up in the air towards the end of papyrus's Fight, And that's the very point. it's meant to be silly, I think. the player doesn't know what's going on really. And that is sans :) Because he spared you from his horrific ability in pacifist.
Sen M When i started the game, I just though he was this goofy lazy, (dumb) character. And that was his plan all along. To be overlooked. Up until that point I thought Papyrus was the intelligent one with all the puzzles. Buuuuuuut I was wrong and my perspective totally changed. I mean, it was my first impression after all. but Yeah, sans is totally my fave.
A collection of soundwaves forming a pattern which in turn creates a rythm noticeable to the human ear which posses a possibilty greater than zero to trigger when engaging in combat with the skeletal creature commonly referred to as sans.
SPOILERS: The only chance we could get at fighting Sans in a pacifist run is if he broke his promise to Toriel. If hard mode becomes a thing, he may be a boss in it.
+Hawkpath1337 Attacks to use against Sans during Pacifist: FIGHT (triggers Megalovania to start playing, immeadiately switches to Genocide Route) ACT (Joke: Makes him laugh after a while) ITEM (Blueprint: Fight immediately ends to explain what it is and why you shouldn't have it...and why you got dunked on) MERCY (Spare does not work. Sans spares YOU. Fleeing results in, well...a reset of the fight and some extra little dialog about being shy.)
+CFW Trick I feel like the fight thing is a good idea, but it should only happen if you do it an unusual amount of times (I'm talking like 50 turns straight of selecting and him just dodging it or something) because I'd see the first few times resulting in Sans thinking the player is pulling their leg or something, and having to try unusually hard for an easter egg like that would be perfect.
Unless there is a small strife in Grillby's when sans jokingly says "if you wanna burger, I'll battle ya for it." If you want the burger, you have a mini battle. Winning the fight Is a way of getting it. The burger could also double your HP, meaning it's vital for surviving. Sans would have a lot of dodge too, when fighting, so that you don't kill him. The only way to end the fight is in Act. One of the options could be: (make a joke) which, eventually, makes the fight become peaceful. After all, the way to fight him is out joke him. This would also solidify the friendship between you and sans, and Papyrus could also have more respect, and may even sometimes ring to hear a joke occasionally.
Song That Might, Might Not, Maybe Will,Will Probably Not, Will Eventually, Will Sooner Or Later, Will Have a Chance To, Has a Probability to, Will Most Likely Not Play When You Fight A Skeleton That Might, Might Not, Maybe Does, Probably Doesn't, Did A Long Time Ago Have The Name Sans, or Snas, or Sasn, or Nsas, or Ness, or Sanesss, or Ssna.
Soo.. It is not wrong to prefer this better than Megalovania? Oh glad im not the only one :D Megalovania its not really a bad theme but i prefer this to be honest, or I would say fitting for Sans
This song probably wasn't used because it was too upbeat for a Genocide run. Megalovania is more of an "oh shit" theme which fits better with the fact that you are not going to have a good time.
+Box Personally i think it was made to dick around with everyone. He released the soundtrack WAY before the game came out and Meglovania is one of his most well known songs. i think he just added this song to trick everyone.
+Box What Jil said, Megalovania is believed to be Chara's theme, that of the player and YOU are the final boss that Sans has to fight. After all a "Megalo"maniac is someone who craves power for powers sake... Doesn't quite fit sans.. you on the other hand...
Perhaps this was intended for a scrapped non- genocide version of Sans' fight? This has a certain non-serious, jokey vibe to it. Maybe Sans was originally going to fight you if you gained a certain ammount of levels, although he wouldn't try nearly as hard as he did in Geno.
+Schloonktapooxis Actually, it's the soundfront from Earthbound, as well as the Touhou series. (The latter of which is a long-running bullet-hell series, in case you hadn't heard of it before.) Both of which make sense, considering that they inspired Undertale in one way or another. (Earthbound for the general game design in general, Touhou for the bullet-hell battle system.)
+kkhohoho1 It used soundfonts from many different games, i believe. Not just Touhou and Earthbound. (although those still are a massive contributor to the soundtrack) This song in particular is definitely Megaman X. Just listen to the guitar and percussion. I believe Megalovania was done with the Megaman X3 percussion set as well.
The Papyrus theme was originally used as the battle theme. This isn’t referencing papyrus, it was going to be an epic final callback to something you would’ve heard constantly ALL GAME.
“heya. wanna have a fight?” *You say sure. “Ok.” *You’re fighting now. “alright, ill go first.” *Sans throws you a bone. “ok, your turn.” *You tell Sans that this is awkward. “yeah.” *The fight has ended. You gained 0 LOV and 0 EXP “Well that was something.”
Fighting Sans in a pacifist run would solve all of my problems, and make my life 2005x better. I want to fight him again, but I already got dunked on and want to prove I'm really his friend. Friendship is hard when your bud is just so fun to kill. ...Is that bad to say?
*+SunScourge* Listen. I mean really, it's Sans' fault. He knows I'm doing it for the challenge, and he goes and gives me one. Just because I keep a save file just before his fight on a flash drive and load it to kill him over and over again doesn't mean I'm like Flowey, I-- OKAY, _you're_ the one with the yellow flower icon, you have no right to talk.
Man. This was one of my favorite moments in the game. It's so powerful, when this song starts playing and you really experience what is so totally actually happening, and you just take that moment to step away from the computer and say to yourself, 'wow, this is real.' Because that's what it is. Existent, I mean.
+Cobalt Kirikizan I want you to know that this is the first thing I've read in a while that elicited legitimate uncontrolled fully-appreciative laughter from my soul. It was brief though. A snort. I snorted. I want you to know that I snorted.
+Cobalt Kirikizan My favourite part of this was that one part that happened. It was unbelievable. But there it was. Happening. On my computer screen. And on hundreds of computer screens all over the country.
+Cobalt Kirikizan Yes, I remember when it played and I had to look up what that song was. Because it was so cool... that it happened. Yes, of course it happened. I indeed heard it and it made me feel good while it happened. Because it happened
@@yuikitsuneko It could, maybe not this specific version, but Toby could've made another version of this theme that sounds super intense, after all, that's what he did to Megalovania. He went through multiple versions of that song before he settled on the one we know
@@gabeth1058 Idk, I haven't had the best response when I say this OST is a lot cooler than Megalovania to me. I think it's just the battle, I think people like Megalovania specifically because of the battle vs. Sans
This song popped into my head randomly earlier, and it led me to think about what the name could actually mean. The ideas I associated with it back in the day were the rumor that this had a VERY small chance to play during the Sans fight, and the idea that this was a song made for a theoretical non-genocide run fight against Sans that got scrapped and ultimately unused. What I've come to think is that this might have been a concept for a Sans battle theme when Toby was still throwing ideas around for the game- the name was a tongue-in-cheek, simple name for it, and it didn't actually have any planned fight associated with it. Just Toby messing around with some concepts. It's such a unique and interesting track that he probably wanted to share it somehow even if it didn't make the cut into the final game- thus, into the OST it goes, just like the other unused tracks.
@ where'd you get this fact because, yes, no one ever got to play past toriel in hard mode, but even then, just because it's hard mode doesn't mean you can't play as a pacifist, and even still, toriel no matter what asks sans to protect you, and to promise her, even in genocide, so, the concept seems like it would be something toby would have done, but we can't be for sure
notice the wording Song That Might Play When *You* Fight *Sans* when you encounter a monster, you always get to do the first turn. but when you encountered Sans at the end of the genocide run, he attacked first. you never hear this song because you never get to ATTACK Sans, he attacks you first. does this mean Megalovania is Chara's theme and this is, in fact, Sans's theme?
Sans i think in the next undertale (if it will exist) i think this should be the music when you tell frisk to mercy the monsters and this should be the song because you are gonna tell puns and it should play when you start with the puns 🔪i found this on the ground is it ok?
Alright, listen up, this is important. Megalovania is a play on the word Megalomania, which can be described as 'The act of deriving pleasure and power from the domination of others' This song, the one that MIGHT play, is sans' battle theme, but this is the final boss, so what song did Toby chose to put in? YOUR theme, Megalovania, because the only time you fight Sans through the entire game is the times you go down that route, the route of megalomania.
+Anticlimaxer Everyone keeps saying this, do people not realize this song has been out for a while now? That track was not made for this game, and the character it was made for really fits. I don't even believe Chara takes pleasure in killing everything, if he did, he would want to do it over and over again. Instead he decides to wipe out all of existence, not rule, but genocide. I just think Toby Fox kept the title because that's what the song's been known as for years now.
TheDaddylongshaft Yes, it's true that this song has existed for a long time now, but not all of the symbolism in video games has to be created specifically for the games. Think back to MGS V, the opening song, 'The man who sold the world' Sung by a different artist, created initially by David Bowie. The song was not created to be in Metal Gear, but it is, AND it has symbolism. Don't be so closed-minded to the concept, as it fits perfectly well, not to mention that this game has been in the works for 4 years, and Toby put thought into EVERY aspect of it. He wouldn't just put megalovania into it when he specifically made a track called 'the song that might play when you fight sans' FOR NO REASON. There's a reason he put Megalovania instead of that song in, just like there's a reason behind every small detail of the game.
Anticlimaxer I don't think I'm being close minded, I just don't think this is Chara's theme, as it doesn't actually fit with the context of that character. Chara doesn't really get a kick out of domination, he gets a rise out of eliminating life.He doesn't want to rule anything or anyone, he wants to kill. He doesn't want power, he wants to watch everything crumble. This song is one of Toby's biggest works, and has been in almost everything he's done, so it would make sense he would try to find a place to use it. Also that whole "song that plays when you fight sans" is an in-universe joke. YOU never fight Sans, Chara does. That's why when you look in the mirror during Pacifist/Neutral runs the text is "it's you". While No Mercy the text box is "it's me". Megalovania is the song that plays when "I" fight Sans, because YOU never get near him. Also while there is a high level of attention to detail in this game, not every little thing is nuanced. I think Megalovania in this case is for two of the strongest people in the universe fighting for a goal they both strongly care about and didn't have to put effort in before this encounter.
Toby Fox: Any idea of a name for this song? Sans: ... Asgore: What about "Song That Might Play When You Fight Sans"? Toby Fox: PERFECT! Sans: NOOOOOOOO! And that's how Sans started his revenge...flirting with Toriel
@@kazokazoos8066 Of course ! Actually I even know most of these songs are heavily touhou, random games like Yume Nikki or Cave story and earthbound inspired to the point only megalovania is his song totally un- Oh wait you wasn't supposed to read that. Nevermind. Just because I found this doesn't mean I dislike it. I really love his work, I know he did it for showing the connections in Undertale and deltarune and reference the games he loved to pay hommage. He really is a great composer who writes fitting and good songs for his games like not a lot of peoples nowadays. Despite taking some elements of other things he always make his songs so original.
+KarleighTheKangaroo no, the song that plays in Grillby's is literally called "sans", while some debate that *genocide spoilers* megalovania is chara's theme because it seems to be a play on words of megalomania "a condition or mental illness that causes people to think that they have great or unlimited power or importance" and that sans plays more like the player would in a neutral run.
According to my thoughts, this song would have played when you go inside the judgement hall, but instead of cheering you on to fight Asgore, the there was a small chance that sans would fight you as a mini boss. As one would expect, this would have been the background music to this fight.
I have a feeling that this’ll be the music that plays when Sans has a serious heated argument with someone. Which is actually constructive as well as rage fueled.
Its just a sped up version of sans(his theme when you hang out with him) but its still great and shows how lazy he is. By just speeding up his original theme
gj noob..... Megalovania plays 100% ._. he said MIGHT PLAY WHEN U FOIGHT SANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNS
+kylezaking Supposedly this was going to be the original battle music but was replaced with Megalovania instead. He probably threw it in the OST anyways because who'd want such a nice song to go to waste?
you realize this is sans' actual theme megalovania isnt sans' theme its your theme since ur not fighting sans and he is the one fighting you megalovania plays instead edit: why yall arguing so much just believe what you believe and move on with your lives lmao
It could be a very, very, very, very, very, very low chance It might only be able to play once on some random client and never again for the games lifetime and that client wasn't being recorded
