Undertale Yellow's Most HATEABLE Character (And Why They're GREAT) 

I just wanna say that Undertale Yellow is an absolutely fantastic fan project that is on par with the original undertale game (And there are moments where I like it MORE than undertale), so please don't take this video as me hating on UTY, rather this video talks about how the hatability of one of the characters as a person strengthens their character and leads to other interesting parts of the story. This video is meant to praise both the game AND that character

Lots of Undertale characters had this same arc, not just Starlo. A huge point of Undertale's characters was them being flawed and unraveled as you spare them. Undyne has a blind hatred for humans (and literally tells you that you're better off dead), Mettaton tries to kill you multiple times just to have a chance at entertaining humans at the surface (also abandoning his viewers in the underground) and Asgore has killed 6 humans already and tries to do the same to you. They all are redeemed and have likable traits despite their flaws. Starlo isn't a first in this regard.

You said that you will hate starlo becuse he treated his friends badly. That's not what i was thinking at all. I just saw his entire life crumble around him. Instead of wanting him dead, i wanted to help him redeem himself.

Why is Starlo unlikeable, I absolutely loved Starlo on my first playthrough of Undertale Yellow.

I don't hate this video but... Starlo isn't really that hateable. I agree he is a bit unfair to his posse, but he regrets it right after, and tries to fix everything (also at least that train was fake). And he Was excited to see a human, which as you said, he is a big fan of their culture (specifically Wild West naturally, and Clover's appearance screams wild west) so he Would be a bit too excited to see a human. Humans are a very big deal in the underground. By the way, you say he blames Clover like it came out of nowhere while literally showing evidence that it was Fiesty Four who blamed them first (and both are correct to an extend). And he does apologize later, he just needs a moment to reflect on the situation (Sometimes you need a moment after a big scene like this). Also, killing him would NOT be giving him a taste of his own medicine. There's a difference between murder and being too excited to see a race you're a huge fan of and accidentally ruining your friendship with 5 people including your childhood friend and needing a moment of self-reflection before apologizing. Also, Beta Papyrus isn't in any game, and Jerry- Can you even ENCOUNTER Jerry if you play True Pacifist Route? The true being you would dread sparing is Flowey the Flower. The sadistic, psychotic, soulless flower that committed genocides out of boredom and curiosity. Though, despite this way too long comment and me personally enjoying Wild East, this is your opinion on this character. By the way, you could still change in No Mercy route, there's still Reset option in this game.

Shocked this isn’t about Ceroba. I don’t hate her, but she hogs the spotlight for the second half of the game, and her actions are way more irredeemable compared to Starlo. Yeah Starlo was a jerk to his friends, but Ceroba lured you in to take your soul, hid everything from her friends, and nearly killed them when they tried to talk it out. Starlo also showed hesitation in fighting you to the point where he has tears in his eyes, but Ceroba was fully set on having you dead

When I first played Undertale Yellow, I tried to get in character. I ended up draining Axis's battery and tried to spare him, but the only available option was "compliment". I sat there, thinking long and hard, but I couldn't think of a single redeeming quality, so I shot him instead.

I have to wonder, even if Martlet forgave you for your crimes against monsterkind, what future could you have in the underground? The monsters are already willing to murder you in cold blood even if you do not hurt a fly. How would they feel about someone who has been slaughtering them, but now claims to have turned over a new leaf? I can't immagine a future in the underground for abborted vengeance Clover.

I didn't expect you to make Undertale video, especially Undertale Yellow, but I love it. Once again you've proven yourself to be a person of culture :)

this is a very well made video and I think it brings up a lot of well thought-out points on the nature of the characters. I often see people talk about starlos morals being out of whack and not making sense, and while I can see that, I think its important to understand whats happening to him. Both ceroba and him are not 1 dimensional characters, and they have their own motivations to the things they do. Painting them as flat out "bad" just because of the way they treat you completely ignores the depth and amazing writing the devs put into the characters. Anyway, amazing video!

Bro, EVERYONE LOVED STARLO, he with maybe Ceroba is clearly the sans of this game, that one character that got comics, fan art, and he has an awesome song etc. I actually hated El Bailador because he comes out of nothing, he just falls from the sky, gives you the most frustrating battle in the game (and not even because the battle is hard but because the controls are fricking weird), gives you in my opinion the most boring and bland dialogues out of any other boss or miniboss and then goes away leaving you like "ok... ". At least Jerry is fun but El Bailador for me was just boring, i am right now doing a genocide route, i feel bad for killing every monster i have killed into this point (snowdin), but i am really excited to kill this lucha libre, samba dancer wannabe

Its amazing the way you put it. All these character arcs tie into Undertale Yellow's biggest underlying theme. The yellow soul represents the dichotomy between justice and vengeance.

I'd say Starlo is an amazing character to me. People have their own opinions on what character they think is unlikable. In all honesty, I like Starlo and Martlet the most.

Every Undertale color game should have atleast one character that is frowned upon the most, that way we can make a club for all of them to join.

Look i don't know the full story of uty (and that this video isn't about her) but i feel that people don't give cerobra much slack she made mistakes and all she wants is her daughter back. She may have gone against her husbands wishes but from what I saw in her final boss backstory is that she really thought she neutralized the serum. And she feels that she let her husband met his end by letting him do his fatal mistake. True she was irresponsible but she wanted what's best for everyone especially her family. And what she did was wrong to save her daughter. But she just wanted to set things right (and during the end of phase one of her fight you can see she shed a tear and that she doesn't want to kill clover) and when shes defeated She comes to her senses and feels that it's only justified if she joins her husband and daughter for what she had done and she asks clover to finish this fight but if you spare her she admits feels that she dug her self in a hole that she fell into and she can't fix anything now. But after starlos and martlets ted talk she accepts what has happened and chooses to forward. True some people thinks that she learned nothing in the end because she let clover sacrifice himself. But she knows that clover wants justice for everyone trapped in the underground and she knows what would happen to him when he loses his soul but both she knows that he wants freedom for them all and clover knows what would be his fate once he sacrifices himself. And in clovers final moments she asks if she wants her to stay (and i really wish there was and option for everyone to stay) and he said he'll be ok and she says her goodbye. Look I she why she is controversial but she made mistakes. And the undertale yellow team wanted the story to be just as emotional as the real undertale and the characters to be just as good too (and even the real undertale characters aren't perfect like Torial because if she knows that frisk could get killed once they leave the ruines why does she give in gameplay wise i know why but lore wise why. And if sans was concerned about his bro why dose he not do anything until the end). And If the writing was a little better she would be less controversial. And it might be true that the spotlight was on her for the rest of the game once she appears. But I feel that the team wanted the player to know who she is and what she can do and that she's important. You can have your opinion but I feel that she isn't a bad character she's just flawed.

I was 100% sure this was gonna be about Ceroba LMAO Also, here's my train of thought, do whatever ya want with it. she was quite literally unlikeable IMO, like, she comes out of nowhere, takes the spotlight for way too long, is an asbolute bitch, and their story is basically that, their husband dies, and to cope with it, they go against their dying husband's last wish and fucking murder their daughter. And to fix it they lie to every single one of their friends to assault a child, and when they discover it, they knock out cold and almost kill two of their friends, to murder a child to somehow make up for their mistake, which knowing their background with chemistry, i doubt it would've gone any better. Like, how is starlo unlikeable COMPARED to Ceroba? in his spot, he makes one mistake, which yes, it's a mistake, everyone makes mistakes, and he assaults you because he's at his lowest, he didn't have the years to cope with anything like Ceroba had, he is not thinking straight, thinking he just lost it all, his friends, his town, the one thing he thought he was doing good just fell apart in front of his eyes all at the same time. Which IS something that could be talked out, unlike murdering a 10 year old. Starlo is desperate, and when not thinking straight attacks you, while Ceroba, is more than thinking straight, they didn't double down, they quadrupled down on the shitties of ideas without a second thought, which Starlo didn't even have the time to have. If there was one monster i wanted to kill the most, was Ceroba, they felt like an unreedemable asshole, and even then the talk they have after the battle is so short and she realizes in such a small amount of time, that it's mindblowingly bad in my opinion, the rest is extremely good, the ending is gold, but how Ceroba just "oh my gawd guys im good person now :) ignore me kill 10 year old and basically try to murder you all :)" it's sad, Starlo is IMO one of the best written characters in the game, while Ceroba felt like an afterthought that they added because they needed another character, i was legit so angry at Ceroba that i didn't take any chances and healed when i needed to to destroy them, i wasn't leaving them a chance to kill me because i was legitimately mad at them acting like they were in any sort of right after doing such atrocious things. In fact, Axis killed me like 17 times, starlo 2 times, the genocide final boss? like 12 times, even el bailador killed me once, because i never took the game as seriously as i did for wanting to kill her, it felt like HELL not hitting that fight button, and Starlo bitching about them dying in the flawed pacifist is funny to me because its just like "Oh my god why did you self-defense why did you kill the fucking maniac that wanted to kill you and literally assaulted me 5 seconds ago :((((", her character COULD've been good but like, she just ended up as unlikeable to me. When she showed up at the end of the pacifist Cutscene i was streaming it to a couple of friends and i was just like "Who invited you GET OUT NO-ONE LIKES YOU" while, yes i may be exxaggerating a bit with how much i hate her, she's still the most unlikeable character out of the bunch for me, because she's just plain stupid, she's just plain dumb, and i dont mean to say that the way she's written is dumb, like she is written as a character who IS dumb, like they don't learn from their mistakes, and even when they do it feels so shallow too that it just feels like "wow why couldn't you figure that shit out like yknow when you had the time to think about all this stuff instead of the 5 seconds after literally just talking to someone?????", i dunno, Ceroba feels like an empty threat, like a character who seems to have depth but just doesn't, their depth is that they're stupid as fuck, they ruin their own life trough multiple mistakes and keep on doubling down like if it's gonna change, like, they keep on doing the literal definition of insanity. But yeah, TLDR; I like starlo because he make sense :) and i dislike ceroba because she dumb :(

My first run I tried to play the game "justly" like a soul of justice would but I also really wanted to shoot something and was annoyed by the complete lack of evil monsters. I knew killing Starlo wasn't just but he was the only monster that got close to "deserving" it so I shot him. When the Feisty Four attacked I was like "Heck yeah this is a real test!" and I think that's what they were trying to do; especially with how little damage everyone does, including you.

at first i was like wtf when you showed el bailador

I always saw Starlo's actions as him losing sight of what he was even doing as the sheriff of the town. In the end, the entire town was revealed to be a front by Star just to entertain the residents while they were stuck there. When Clover, a human, showed up in the town, he saw it as a way to spice things up. It's why he dropped everything the moment he saw Clover and had everyone organize multiple activities surrounding their "initiation." Making them his second-in-command would give him an excuse to do more things like it, or maybe he raced to name them "deputy" to incentivise them to stay. Whatever the reason, he was too focused on livening up the town that he didn't notice all the people he was pushing away by doing so, and his pride got in the way of his ability to repair the damage.

For me, the most annoying thing in the game was the family of foxes (except for the baby), or rather their entire storyline. In the beginning, Asgore fires the father of the family for a very far-fetched reason. Let me remind you that he did not fire Alphys himself, despite the fact that she accidentally mutated a lot of people. But for the fan version of Asgore, setting fire to flower beds is a terrible crime, for which one of the few competent monsters needs to be deprived of his job. As a result, Asgore looks like a fool, and the fox looks like a victim of arbitrariness. Then Ceroba's husband starts working on the supersoldier serum, completely ignoring the fact that ANY monster can become very strong if it absorbs a human soul. In fact, the king himself was going to become the super soldier to protect the monsters, but the fox sabotages this decision by not giving him one of the souls. After all, he could absorb it himself to gain the power to protect his family on his own. But he prefers to kill himself with experiments and leave his wife and daughter defenseless. Good job, idiot. And, of course, he thinks the best solution is not to give the results of his experiments to other scientists, but to force his wife to secretly continue his work. A housewife with no experience in science. Who immediately starts making mistakes and eventually kills her own daughter. These characters have shot themselves in the foot so many times that it becomes very difficult to sympathize with them in the end, although the authors do their best to cause pity for them. I don't understand why every monster scientist should be like Alphys at her worst. Moreover, Alphys at least did something stupid, following the orders of the king, and these two themselves decided to turn their lives into hell.

Look ma' I'm on TV! But in all seriousness I liked your video and just wanted to add some of my thoughts so I apologize in advance for the mini-essay I'm likely about to type. I really like that your video brings up the question of if some really bad people even deserve mercy, because I do think it's something that Toby Fox really wanted people to think about with Undertale. I see some other people already brought up in their comments that a lot of the characters in Undertale try to kill for morally dubious reasons, but even though they do you're able to talk things out and get to know them better instead of just resorting to violence. Flowey is essentially the final test of how far your willing to go to try and understand someone who is making a lot of terrible and selfish decisions. I think a lot of people view the genocide run as completely evil because all the monsters are "innocent and good", but the truth is that the monsters have already killed six humans just for being human. (obviously that doesn't justify the genocide route, I'm just making a point that it's not completely black and white) I think one of my favorite things about Undertale Yellow is that it shows more of that moral gray area. Clover comes to the underground because the monsters have already killed five humans, and you're literally playing as someone who has to die because King Asgore said so. In Undertale you're mainly focused on your own adventure in the underground, but Undertale Yellow from the very beginning focuses on the people who had to die to help set up Asgore's tragic character lol. Finally I just want to go ahead and say here that Martlet is an awesome character. The fact that even though she's a royal guard, she's willing to go out of her way to travel with and try to protect you, and she even defends Clover for what they do in the flawed pacifist ending is really nice. Martlet is extremely based.

Fun Fact: If you kill everyone in the Genocide Route, Martlet is your final opponent. She *really* wanted you to change your mind and think things over. Now it's too late.

El bailador was actually a fun fight

Here's the thing about Starlo and other characters in Undertale and Undertale Yellow. When you consider the circumstances of the Undertale universe, while what they might do is wrong if not heinous, there is at least some level of reasoning for their actions. At the very least, it's because of the whole conflict between humans and monsters. And even if that doesn't play into their actions, they are still given a chance to change. None of these characters are *hateable* in the way you discussed at the beginning. What you described there was a hate sink. But there is value in a hate sink, at least in my opinion. A hate sink, having no redeeming qualities in any sort of way, is done right if their actions can motivate others (i.e., the protagonist) to put an end to their actions, and result in some sort of change in the characters they are around. They don't even have to be evil to be a hate sink, they just have to be unrelentingly unlikeable and, more importantly, reject any opportunities to change for the better. And there's also the question of, who's to say when someone is beyond redemption? How does one judge if another has crossed the line, and even if they tried to change, it wouldn't make up for everything they've done? According to you, at least in this game, that moral event horizon is never reached. At least, not reached at the point where Martlet offers Clover another chance. Really, a hate sink is not a character that belongs in Undertale or Undertale Yellow. The reason why Jerry gets the pass is because he's not supposed to be taken seriously, a joke character you're not supposed to care about, unlike what was originally planned for Papyrus. That is why Papyrus had to change.

The reason why I always likes Starlo on my first run is because his story is a tragic one, not a hatable one and I wanted him to get better. But I ended up getting so frustrated at him that I killed him in my first run which was neutral run. I did reset so I could spare him again after though.

I'm a little surprised with the comments defending Starlo as a great character and Ceroba being more disliked... Not only does she happen to be my favorite creature (the Kitsune, which is a trickster spirit, fitting with her agenda), but I found her the strongest written (and arguably the most central character to the plot outside of her husband). Starlo seemed to lack much redeeming qualities for me. He did make the town and made the move to save Clover, but his character otherwise wasn't great. Especially since... Starlo brought fake bullets to the Genocide duel, he literally planned to get himself killed by the homicidal child just so he can "look cool for a moment". Kinda hard to redeem with that one.

Eh I disagree with your premise to be honest. I think that it is fine to be willing to give them another chance but they are not owed one. And to compare clover to ceroba or starlow doesn't really line up. At the end of the day, what clover does can be summarised as killing creatures that attack them, starlow and ceroba are trying to exploit a child that (in pacifist) has done literally nothing wrong. Notice how you can't kill Moe at any point in no mercy. You can definitely argue that it's perhaps unreasonable or disproportionate, but clover doesn't owe monsters anything. Undertale is moreso a condemnation of the player rather than frisk, and has you attack targets who literally don't fight you like mobster kid and papyrus. UT yellow the player doesn't seem to exist - you are playing as clover, not controlling them externally. Ironically enough it's starlow's derriding you for offing ceroba that really gets me. Really sours my impression of the character, personally. UT yellow's no mercy route is the first time an UT related property has made the no mercy route actively cathardic for me.
