Cousteau and his Calypso. God I loved watching his movies when I was a kid. Thanks for bringing memories back. Will definitely rewatch everything I can find. One of the most iconic people of the 20th century. What an incredible person he was.

Jacques Yves Cousteau has been one of my heroes since I was a child. And I got to go to a lecture of his on manatees when I was a tween. I even got to speak with him. The silent world is an incredible story ( he used to blow up bombs underwater for the navy) and he was so inspiring

Growing up in the 60's and 70's, the adventures of Jacques and the Calypso were second only to 'Star Trek' on my list of "must-see" TV programmes.

exploding the marine life and those effects there of, water is actually really good at blocking and dissipating radiation, so the idea not completely crazy if dont care what happens to life directly near the barrel and there secondary effects. tho won't recommend it.

I loved watching Cousteau as a child growing up in NY - perhaps a somewhat flawed character who made some mistakes along the way, but the man left an incredible legacy

Whoo a timeline! I really want to thank whoever came up with that little extra, i find it very hard to conceptualise different parts of history, especially if several of them come up within a few minutes. The Commander Cousteau were a great guy. Studying underwater life was his true passion and he really loved the Caribbean sea. I remember the Calypso docking in Bouillante port many years ago. He is one of these men who make me proud to say I'm French. Vive la France !

I think I've seen just about all of Jacques Cousteau documentaries.. He was one hell of a storyteller and an underwater investigator. I'll never forget his contributions to the sea world.

That timeline-thing is awesome. Usually you get buried in dates and have difficulties putting it in order and perspective. This really helps, keep it up for these kinds of historical videos! Maybe leave some key dates/infos in a smaller font?

I hate to nitpick but his show ran far longer than just a couple of years. I saw it in rerun with Dr Who and the like on PBS and I loved listening to him describe the ocean. I have so much deep affection for him and his efforts ((Imperfect as they sometimes were).

i remember watching the episode where he explores the wreck of the HMHS Britannic when i was 9 and i fell in love with his series. i've accumulated at least half a dozen encyclopedias about the oceans, aquatic discoveries, and marine life over the years, all thanks to Couteau.

Remembering Jacques-Yves Cousteau Born on June 11, 1910. He was a French naval officer, oceanographer, filmmaker and author. He co-invented the first successful Aqua-Lung, open-circuit SCUBA (self-contained underwater breathing apparatus). Once upon a time (before personal computers, the Internet, cell phones), I recall seeing "The Silent World" in the school library. (You know, those places where you find BOOKS.;) I bought the paperback book via the Scholastic Book Club and read it until the pages fell apart. Then I bought another. I didn't see the movie version of the book until some time later, since I lived in a small sugar plantation town. I've seen it from time to time along with episodes of "The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau." It is unfortunate that the oceans of the world are as mysterious now as they used to be in the 1950's. (At least there are "Coelacanths" to find and giant squid to marvel at, with the occasional Oarfish freaking out the public.;)

I remember watching Jacques films in the 6th grade back in the day when we watched films from a reel-to-reel projector. DVD's and even VCR's weren't invented yet back in 1982. Now VHS is dead, and DVD's are on their way to the graveyard as USB thumbdrives are taking their place. Wow, I feel old now, shit!!

When the Queen Mary arrived in Long Beach, CA they built a marine museum in the ship which influenced me greatly as a child. Sadly it was dismantled and closed. Once upon a time, we valued educating our society to affect positive change. I really miss his documentaries. And his voice.

Before I acquired a fear of deep water and gave up my dreams of ocean exploration, he was one of my biggest idols. Still is to this day, and I even have an entire set of books written by him, but sadly, even the sight of deep water drives me to panic, nowadays.
