This is AWESOME. People who build ponds and welcome native animals like amphibians are doing Mother Nature a huge favor. Habitat is shrinking rapidly but you are helping bolster the shrinking habitat by providing a protected one.

that's great! I have been trying to turn my small lawn from grass to wildflowers. Seeing more birds, bugs, and ground critters. I have a small "bird" bath that everyone visits, but would love a baby pool sized pond . First time seeing a video today. The one about weight loss. The algorithm must sense my new treadmill, lol.
@Sandreline
@Sandreline Год назад
And if you want, you can allow your pond to progress naturally. Overtime sediment will build up and it will turn into a bog, and eventually very fetile land. The book "Braiding Sweetgrass" has an excellent chapter on the author struggling against nature to maintain her pond. Fascinating how these everything has a life cycle, even things we don't consider living.

At my family's small holding we have 2 wildlife ponds one near the bottom of the property that hasn't gone to well and another by where one of the 2 pig paddocks are and the second pond has done alot better and it just shows how important water is to wildlife. With the 2 pig paddocks we have two so the other can recover from the previous set of pigs, if one had pigs in throughout autumn (fall for you yanks) and winter it gets rather muddy so the ground needs to recover. Note our paddocks are 50x50m so the pigs have lots of space and we have done 5 pigs at once we usually get 3 from the breeder. (Added the pig stuff because of you recently beginning raising pigs and thought it might be helpful)

Anyone can have their own backyard pond with a $5 big plastic Walmart pool and water and making sure it has good oxengenating plant life. I got most of my plants free of charge from a local mini stream and creek. Then I got mosquito fish that I found in the creek. Currently invasive in the area so it’s good to grab them from streams here. And some beautiful fresh water clams I didn’t mean to scoop them up. And Ofcourse aquatic snails. Now all I’m waiting for are those beautiful froggies to come over. My pond is magical and it’s always teaming with life. I have fairy shrimp somehow in there. And adorable crustaceans. And four different species of fresh water aquatic snails. Dragon fly larvae and water beetles come naturally to the pond. And it was so easy. It also provides me a great fertilizer for the plants.

@_Chessa_
@_Chessa_ Год назад
@@hoosierpioneer this is why you would need Eastern or western mosquito fish. I got lucky when getting mine in a local park stream. They are invasive in my area so parks try to get rid of them routinely. I happened upon a few and still have them after three years! :)

should release little minnows in there, something like bait rams should do the trick. they only get about 3-4in long. Used to use them for minnow control on my neighbors property, didnt have any fish but what the flood water would bring in. Would only stock minnows each year.
