There isn’t much that’s not good about this knife, considering that the completely usable handle is the only bad thing that you found about it. You just proved to me that this is a great knife!

The sheath is intentionally made lose and “wobbly “ beacase the in extreme cold snow and ice can freeze in the tighter sheath so the knife is difficult to pull out. This is a Swedish knife and this version of the sheath is specifically made for extreme cold.

I have enjoyed some of your other reviews but think you are way off on your assessment of the Fallkniven F1 particularly your comments on the zytel sheath. You say that the retention without the button snap is so poor you have to use the snap and it's awkward to do with one hand? However in your review of the Spec Ops Combat master sheath that only has a button snap, you say it's "awesome" about 20 times? So the Fallkniven with a button snap and a retention device is really poor but the Spec Ops with just a button snap is really "awesome"? What's the difference? The spec ops needs the snap done up every time the knife is inserted in the sheath whereas the F1 can be put in the sheath whilst working without having to do up the button. I know which I prefer? The kydex sheath you now have would be totally useless in the environment that the F1's zytel sheath was designed for, one of my favourite features about it is it's slim no catch design which is perfect for carrying in a pocket (as it was designed to). Your kydex one with it's tek-lok is huge and can now only be carried on a belt and would crack up at the first sign of a scandinavian winter. When you select a knife you should take into consideration it's intended / design purpose and whether that makes it suitable for your use. I think you should have done this when giving your review and the fact you didn't makes me think that that your knowledge of knives and knife use isn't as comprehensive as I first thought. I realise people have different opinions but your comparison with the Master Hunter is not objective at all it's just what you prefer and what suits you. I've owned my F1 with zytel sheath for over ten years and none off the faults you mentioned have ever come to mind. In my opinion the F1 hits it's design brief 100% and I think it's "awesome" 10 out of 10.

wav3s your right about the sheath - I like it - it was designed to be workable in a frozen environment where I could build inside and lock the knife in like in a kydex - I have the original - the leather - even a actual leather bush craft sheath and the kydex - dependent on the environment - I choose what I need

I just stumbled on this review. Very honest. BUT one must keep in mind the design constraints for this knife as it had to fit into already existing knife pockets of SWAF pilots' suits and not be too heavy, since a fighter ejection seat can peak close to 20G making it 20 times 'heavier' for a painful moment. We wore this on the side of our thigh so the bruise would be substantial if one had to eject...

The plastic sheath isn't that bad you said. Frist of all it is 100% water resistant, leather is not. The next benefit is the sheath is really light and small, much better than the leather sheath. The worse snap or loose fit is easy to adjust. Just cut a piece of an old bicycle tube and put it over the notch. This is a easy way to remove this disadvantage. Furthermore the belt loop is big and sturdy. Basically this is maybe an "ugly", but very robust sheath. For me it is a very good supplement for this great knife.

like another viewer said the sheath is loose fitting for a reason, if a knife gets wet then very cold it has the chance of freezing in which is why i wont carry a tight fitting kydex or like kydex sheath in the winter its happens to me on multiple occasions the sun comes out during the day starts to melt the snow everything gets wet and then the sun goes down and it drops to -40 ive had knives kinda freeze and become kinda annoying to take out and also freeze solid to the point where i had to stick the knife in my pants to thaw it out or put it next to a fire its extremely inconvenient

This is a forces emergency survival knife designed for use in harsh Nordic/Arctic conditions. It is not a "take to the woods and play Rambo for the weekend" knife. It excels in what it was designed to do, not necessarily for what you want it to do.

Arguably some of the best bush craft blades on the market. I keep beating on mine. All I do is sharpen it with a strop and Bark River Black Magic. Then I use it again. I've been cleaning them with white ash from my fire and spit. That is essentially lye It leaves the blade polished looking, and even removes pine pitch.

Surprising review. But this shows how important ergos are. I use large size gloves to and like The F1. To me it feels nimble in the hand. No fancy shapes to get in the way when using different cutting grips. But like you say it can get uncomfortable with prolonged use but this is true for many knives. The hidden tang is nice in cold weather. Wish more knives came with Mora style handles simple durable an comfy. I think the F1 came with a kydex sheath in the past. But it was discontinued when they became brittle and broke in cold weather. If you put on a couple of ranger bands around the sheath where the retention tab is, it works ok. That beeing said i have a custom kydex sheath on mine. But im a sucker for desert tan😁
@flashdamingo
@flashdamingo 9 лет назад
There's another youtuber that rated the nylon sheath higher than the leather and custom kydex options.....based on performance of wet sheath then frozen. It was pretty convincing....at least for cold climates...esp as the f1 was designed as a pilots survival knife.
@stevanoutdoor
@stevanoutdoor 11 месяцев назад
I realize I'm reacting to an 8 year old video but the F1 is build for a reason. It's a Swedish Pilot survival knife. A pilot is usually up in the air and not on the ground. If you want to spend your time on the ground there's the A1 (Army survival knife). For hunters there's the H1 (Hunters knife) that has a way more comfortable handle than the Master Hunter. The 'survival' knife will always be the one you have with you when SHTF. So they kept the F1 lightweight, slim profile and compact so the pilots would actually carry it without even noticing it as a 'just in case' knife you hit the ground before planned. The Zytel sheath has a bit of room so the knife won't freeze to the sheath. Also Kydex might break when very cold and Zytel won't or at least is less likely too. The outer slabs of the laminated blade are 420J2 steel and that's very corrosion resistant and almost care free. It's what a lot of divers knives were made of. In a strange way people who are more in the 'bushcraft' scene who basically go out to use their knife all day, still adopted this knife. To me that's weird since it's not the intended purpose. If I know I'm gonna use my knife all day carving all kinds of stuff I don't bring the F1. But if I'm gonna do a day hike or some backpacking and just want a knife in case SHTF I don't bring a heavy, bulky knife.
@waldschnepfe9673
@waldschnepfe9673 7 лет назад
Regarding the knife: With this kind of slip-proof handle you don't need a bigger finger guard. If your hands are to big you have to choose another knife, but this is the same as if you would buy a small bicycle and you are 7 feet high. So please compare apples and apples...

Great observation about the lanyard hole. I have the F1 with leather sheath. Remember the knife was designed for pilot survival, thus, lightweight. The convex blade is incredibly versatile, just chops through any task and is, I think, the strongest possible grind.

Great video and honest assessment. I have the F1 and overall It is one of my favorite knives. One of the key things in buying a knife that people really need to look into is ergonomics. Often it is one of the finer points that get overlooked.
@tommysoderholm8305

Two things: 1: the F1 and most Fällkniven knives come with small and thin handles compared to most other knives. Gideons pet peeves with the handle seems to be mostly because his hands are too big for the handle. Unfortunately Gideon does'nt seem to realise this and admit that people with smaller hands would appreciate it. 2: Gideon does not understand the use of the Zytel sheath and therefor he can't properly review it. What boggles is how he has'nt even tried the leather sheath but is still able to rate it. The Zytel sheath, and most fällkniven knives, is designed for arctic climates. The space of rattle allows for the knife to actually freeze, if wet, inside the sheath and the user would still be able to draw it. When moving from heat to cold condensation can build up on the blade. This condensation later freezes in the cold environment and if the blade is in a kydex sheath you would be hard pressed to get it out. I carried Fällkniven model G1, S1 and PRK with the Zytel in boot camp and during deployment and they never failed. During basic training in the most northern regiment in the world i saw weapons freeze over due to condensation and poor maintenance. The knife F1 and sheath are compatible with the toughest climate of survival, namely, arctic. As for the fingerguard I agree with Gideon, on the other hand, many mora knives lack it and they still sell. I'd prefer to have it bigger though.

+LIVE2HUNT Is not! He did too (well technically he did)! At 13:17 he rates package value and gives knife with leather sheath a 4/5 without having tested the leather sheath. Also the leather option is not better than the zytel (personal opinion).

Cold weather knife made to work whit big winter/pilot gloves. Small slim design for easy carry on a flight suit. Not 100% tight sheath designed for sub zero temperatures so that the blade don't freeze in place. But can be drawn at all times. And with proper paracord and at a good length it makes a loop that acts as a secure grip even whit big gloves or freezing fingers.

@tberkoff

I'm not sure why you are hating on the F1 sheath. Its light, durable, and the blade locks in tight. Also, the F1 sheath is nearly identical to Cold Steel's "Secure-Ex" sheath -- both are made of a hard plastic/zytel material with nylon upper. It is the same sheath.
@cosmikvratch
@cosmikvratch 9 лет назад
Todd Berkoff Hi, sorry, to disagree. this sheath is not durable in wet environment. the rivets rust and break, unlike on a secure-ex sheath (from my experience). That doesn't imply that the knife isn't good, though.
@tberkoff
@tberkoff 9 лет назад
cosmik vratch Wet environment?! I don't think the sheath or knife are designed for being submerged in water...or acid...or whatever you are doing to the sheath. That being said, these knives are designed for survival situations in harsh cold weather climates - like in Sweden - I don't think moisture or water or snow will do anything to it. My point to Gideon was that the two sheaths are VERY similar in design and material, but he was particularly harsh toward the F1 sheath for some reason.

concerning the sheath, we don't have the same definition of "reasonable", obviously!;) I would agree 100% on the knife itself, though.

I've been waiting for this review! Thanks for getting around to it. I had my own concerns about the handle so thanks for getting more in depth about it. I understand the whole thought of cold weather that went into the design but in my area the seasons change quick. I knew I wanted to get a convex woods blade for my next purchase so I did some research and got intrigued by the bark river knives and decided to order the fox river with micarta handles, anxious to get it in my hands! I have this knife and I like it. The VG-10 steel is the main reason I bought it. I do a lot of backcountry rafting and fishing, and in those environments, stainless steel is a must. It's also an excellent knife for camp chores (especially cooking). I wouldn't baton with it or do certain other things but for my purposes, it's an excellent choice.

This is what a REVIEW should be like, going through every feature on the product.. good and bad.. no sugarcoating it.. The most things this guy says makes really good sense. I have baught a shitload of products just from watching reviews by people making more commercials than actual reviews. When I held a friends F1 in my hand I remember thinkin "wow ..thats all?, all this hype over this?.. It's true that the blade is superb, but no convex and thick spines is not for everyone...and yes handle is way to thin if you have larger hands. One thing that the F1 for sure has going for it over the master hunter is the tang going through the handle making a pommel.

Thanks for the review, I feel less lonely, as I share the same thoughts on my A1. I went for the leather sheath version but I'm not satisfied with it neither, even if it's way better than the zytel one. I also feel that the handle is too thin and I'm constantly getting my index over the guard to have a better grip which is neither comfortable nor safe....but I'm stuck with the awesome blade that hinders all the other less attractive aspects...I f#%$* love it! You get easily a wicked edge on it, it lasts and don't rust...I also love it's thickness and shape....

It is made as a pilot survival knife for scandinavian climat, the grip is thin because most of the time you will be wearing gloves. It goes down to -30c -22f at times. Same thing with the zytel sheath, kydex will crack below -0c 32f. Leather will be to heavy on the flight suit.

Hi, tanks for very nice review ( as usual ) and thank you for all your work. In my organization we bought some of these knife and of course you're right about the drawbacks. But, I you want to improve a bit the situation with this equipment without spending too much money, you can try this to reduce cut risk and enhance this poor sheath a bit by doing so: Equipment required masking tape 1.5cm wide ( ~ 0.75 inch) 5 min of time Place a short pinky lanyard ( this one you knew already :) ) Place 3 turns of tape around the sheath about one inch below the top of the sheath where the small plastic moving part is placed to provide the retention. This will prevent your knife to fall inadvertently and stupidly loosing it. Place one turn of tape around the handle the closest possible to the blade and two or three turns a bit further down the handle (~1 inch).This will reduce the rattle. I got a picture of the job done but not possible to place it in the comments unfortunately. I hope this will help! Regards, Stephane

Horses for courses really. I have owned the F1 longer than any other knife I've purchased (either factory or custom) I've owned knives from TOPS, ESEE, Gerber, Extrema Ratio, Blind Horse and many many others. Like yourself I use them and end up finding something wrong with every one. Handle this! Blade shape that, cutting geometry the other!! The thing is I always turn back to the F1. I agree the handle is perhaps a little small (I have medium/large gloves) and the lanyard hole is pointless - actually unless I'm working over water I never use one on a small knife anyway. This is a survival knife in the truest sense IMO. I would be more likely to carry the F1 with me than any other and let's face it, the knife you've got on you at the time is your survival knife. I doubt I'd have my ESEE 5 or 6 on me as often. The smaller blades are more likely to be on my person. Like I say. I have issues with every knife, but for size, cutting ability, use in any environment F1 takes beating

Hello, would like to ask your advice because I want to make a more powerful possibilile and excellent quality cutting sets so that long hard me, I would take a compact knife (but robust and reliable) and a larger (machete) needed in severe environments, that in addition to machetes function also let me split the wood for the fire or making a shelter. For the compact knife (blade on 10/11 cm) it is undecided whether it is best stainless steel or carbon steel? I propose tropongo three models and tell me what you think is better: Esee 3 steel 1095, Lionsteel M4 steel M390 or Fallkniven F1 VG 10 laminate. Let me know you which is the best choice.

This knife is specifically designed as a "Pilot Survival Knife" - therefore it is compact for a reason! If you're looking for a "full size" buschcraft/survival/do-it-all knife, this may not be it. Or at least not the most comfortable for all hand sizes, but it does work exceptionally well as a "pilot survival knife". It's compact (but not small in real life!) thus easy to carry, it's almost indestructible and built of very good quality materials. That's what it is. Don't expect it to be anything else or something it never claimed to be!

I loved the blade on this knife as well. I kept it for years trying to ignore the hotspots in the handle. Eventually I realized I was more in love with the idea of it than the knife itself. I found the same for the S1. I eventually sold it as well due to hotspots in the handle because it was too small. I have played with both the A1 and A2 and found the handle far better. But in that bigger size range there are better buys.

This knife is FANTASTIC ... no it's not a tactical, that's not its purpose, but you know, it'll do damage in the right hands ... The balance is one of the best of any knife I own...the steel is great ...will withstand harsh weather/treatment ... The balance is superb ... The handle is great ... It's on the "thin" side ... but it is VERY comfortable, non-slip and doesn't fatigue .... It may not be built in the "US of A" ... oh, wait, that's also a good thing ... It's not a Rambo knife, it's not a Hollywood special...it just works and if you needed it in an emergency ... Guess what ... It will work just great....the Swedes are some pretty clever people ... Buy it ... It's way better than some of the crap I've bought based on this type of review ...

Thanks for the honest review. The knife community, like the bushcraft community, can be very trendy, and I think the zeal for the Fallkniven is more a result of those trends than of reality. Fallkniven makes a quality blade, but it's overpriced, too small, the hilts too small, the sheaths poor. The sheaths, in particular, remind me of those cheap plastic sheaths I used to get with $3 fish fillet knives when I was a kid. But there are many better, more reasonably priced options out there now. Philosophy #1 about knives and bush living--Never spend so much on a knife that you're afraid to use it.

Thankfully I do not wear large size gloves or suffer from sausage finger syndrome. So this knife would probably fit me just fine. However I agree with you on the other points. I almost bought an F1. But now I am awaiting a Cold steel Master Hunter. Thanks. Love the Channel.

Your review and the comments illustrate two things: 1. research or think about the market (minus any advertising hype) for which the knife was designed; and, 2. make sure that the knife works for you. Take another knife, the Ontario 499 or its contemporary with a different handle. They are also referenced as "military survival knives". And the complaints roll in. The complainers don't understand the market. The blade is somewhat dull. That is one of the main complaints. Sure it is dull. But why? A military fixed blade knife was not designed or sharpened to filet a fish or skin a deer. It was designed to stick and twist and do damage to the target. The next complaint is that is that the serrations on the knife don't work because it fails as a fire starter. The serrations weren't designed to be a fire starter. They are there to cut through the thin metal of an aircraft skin. Take another two knives. Cold Steel doesn't manufacture knives as some people believe. My father lived less than 5 miles from the "headquarters" in Oxnard. It is a warehouse. Many years ago, Cold Steel contracted with the Fallkniven people to make the excellent military survival knife that retails for about $50. After the two companies stopped doing business together, Fallkniven designed the A1 based upon what it had been producing for Cold Steel. It then contracted to have the A1 made by a top shop in Japan. They are designed for different purposes. However, you can take the $50 knife and if you put in the effort at changing the Cold Steel blade, you can have an excellent hunting knife (just remember folks to bill your grinding time labor at $100 per hour and include the cost of the materials). It also will not be in a stainless steel (the trade uses that term, but all steel rusts ultimately). Choosing for yourself and what works. I took an F1 and compared it to the Esee 4 with factory sheath option. Well, I don't walk around with a fixed blade strapped to my waist. On the few occasions, one is worn, the knife with its sheath must go in a suit pants pocket. Can't do that with the Esse 4. Can do it with the F1 with the factory sheath. Doesn't matter that I would prefer the Esee 4. It doesn't work in that carry situation.

Looks like they have a micarta F1, and have you looked at the cocobolo TK5? Also, it seems at least at some point they were selling blades with no handle. But the link I found was dead.

Good, honest review Aaron. I have long sung the praises of the CS Master Hunter over the F1, and that was before they upgraded the steel, so in my view, it's not even a contest at this point.

Have you reviewed the Berber Evo mid-size yet? It's a really cool little pocket knife. You have the options of serrations and if you don't like them you still have more than have the blade length that's not serrated. It also is tanto style. Great deal for 20$

If you want to try more convex grinds you need to try some Bark River Knife and Tool knives. They are worth every penny, I have two and love them. I have the Aurora and the Bravo 2 both in A-2 tool steel, but I think if you look at their line up just find one you like the look of and go for it I do not think you will be disappointed.

I think this is advertised as a pilots knife to be worn in compact inviroments so the slim fit works well in that environment, I agree with the lanyard hole, I don't understand why that position is the way it is but I'm sure there's a good reason

I was just handling the one I purchased 7 years ago. It's nice, it's slim but somehow it feels like the blade is too robust for the handle. It never really saw any use because of the handle. I have been contemplating trading it but it's just such a compact and nice design I won't do it. It's so close to a superb design and yet so far. If you have large hands don't buy it.

Get yourself an A1. Longer, thicker handle with the lanyard hole further back, and it has a bigger finger guard. The handle on mine also feels more tacky than the F1s I have. I LOVE the A1. The F1 fits me decently too, and I love it as well, but the A1 is amazing.

Good thoughts except for the sheet. Its quite robust and simple and is used widely by swedish military that often operate and train in around -30C bigger part of the year and there it shows its durability and you will see whats holding up and what don't. I agree that its not a funny or cool to deal with but in our case, it does its job i think. About the handle i think its so personal cause of the human differences. i think people likes it is because it feels light small and nimble to handle. Perfect in my hands which is small. Good review !

Have been using the F1 for 2 years now, And its like you said, VG10 steel is good, the blade shape perfekt for multipurpose use, the handle is small but its no problem for me and then the sheath its crap, the same goes for fallkniven high end knives. I bought fallkniven jarl for 3500 SEK (380 dollars) and the sheat is something you get with a knife for 50 dollars

As a person with medium sized hands, I obviously don't have the same issues as you. I have the A2, which is a much larger knife. As an aside, having done proper knife cutting competitions. The lanyard needs to be in front of the guard and then wrapped around the hand to lock it in. Having a lanyard at the back and using it to lock or connect the knife to the hand is incredibly dangerous. You could end up with the knife acting like a pendulum and snapping back around and hitting you with some force. I'd only recommend a lanyard in such places in folders to allow you to pull the knife out of a pocket easier or as intended with a fixed blade. To attach to a device to secure it to your person when in the sheath.

I have one and I really appreciate it. Especially when it comes to weight and compact size. However, most of the minuses contained in the film are very accurate. (Maybe apart from the sheath 😅). In my opinion, the sheath is indestructible (don't tell that to Joe X😂) and convenient to take to the cockpit of a fighter plane. Apart from the above, I am very curious about your opinion on FV F1X Elmax! I'm waiting for the video and test opinion 🫠. Best regards and Merry Christmas to all!🎅

Nice review - very honest and fair - just keep in mind that the F1 is not really a hunting or bushcraft knife - it's mission armament is as a pilot survival knife - usage would be short term and size is at a premium inside a airplane - odds are a combat pilot would never have to actually use his knife - they only carry maybe a couple of magazines for their pistol ( probably never use that either ) - they don't even carry a rifle - from what I understand the blade profile is called a rocker tip which is great for processing food and the convex grind is excellent for doing wood - remember - a pilot will have gloves on so a Narrow handle will fit better in a gloved hand - the knife was designed by the Swedish war department with very precise requirements and design features - remember - survival situation - gloves are usually worn - I have two with kydex sheathes - personally I take my Ontario sp8 into the woods - that I use as a - knife - axe - chisel - lol a hammer ( with the blades side ) and I have even used it a a Maddox to cut a trench - the F1 I carry to do the smaller things - lol you know preppers never carry just one knife ;-)

I had one, had one. I gave it away for a few reasons.VG10 is great in kitchen knives but I got microchipping when giving it hard use. Lanyard hole drove me nuts. The transition from the top of the handle to the blade had a big bump (which i removed but should not have had to.) Skinny handle.The button on the sheath was poo. It rattled in the sheath a lot. Pretty disappointed with it overall. It did take a wicked edge and hold it for a long time under light use.
@Guide504
@Guide504 8 лет назад
the sheath needs tape around the retainer and this pob is solved. Other than that the sheath is impact resistant drains well and will not 'freeze on' like tight fitting kydex. The knife is designed to be light and discrete for pilots in this respect its dimensions are perfect. I have this one in 3g and use it as a backup for my A1 which is the standard army survival knife.

Sorry, but I dont agree with you! The handle of the F1 is made to be comfortable with gloves, a thicker handle is not as perfect in that conditions! The knife is short because its a pilot-survival knife and pilots cannot wear bigger knives on their belt! The VG10 convex grind holds a sharp edge forever as I experienced myself, no need to resharpen often! I especially like the sheath, its light weight and small and very durable! The knife is held safely and no risk to loose it! Yes it rattles a little but that has a good reason! The knife in the sheath can get filled with water and freeze but you will always be able to take the knife out of the sheath! if dirt, sand, etc gets into the masterhunters sheath it can work like sandpaper on the blade wich will less likely happen in the F1 sheath!Regards, Dan.
