Join us as we continue on our hard task to clear the soil and stone piles to finally unearth the 200-year-old foundation on our homestead in Ireland. Watch as Ben finds more of the bedrock, the very foundation of our once derelict farmhouse and 200 year old stone outbuildings.
Showing the various high patches of the bedrock in the road at the front of the farmhouse and shows an exposed corner stone of the house. Ben starts to wonder how the farmhouse and outbuildings were built on this massive rock. Drainage will be an issue around the house.
With so much digging to do, we take the time to plant the saved blackcurrents from last week in exactly the same place we removed them from. Makes no sense does it? It will!
"Unearthing 200 Year Old Foundations: Bedrock On Our Homestead" shows the determination of us both (more so Dawn) in getting to the bottom of these very old buildings. Once this area is cleared, We can look at drainage options on this part of the land.
There is something for everyone on The Corner House Project channel, if you subscribed for the derelict house renovations or just for the homestead, we will bring the smiles, you sit back and relax and let us do the work.... well, Dawn will do the work.
Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more homesteading and house renovation adventures!

You two must sleep well at night after working away so hard in your garden. The back of the outbuildings looks great, it must be so satisfying to rediscover the progress every time you come out in the morning.

Hi Cynthia, thank you for commenting (I do miss the pink hand though) Yes, we sleep really well after a day / month / 8 months of it. But to be fair, we have never slept better since moving here. It is silent at night until the birds start in the morning and have a real bed after 6 months was a game changer to sleeping longer. It is lovely to go out and see what yesterdays work gained, but sadly tomorrow morning will be different, as we have left it in a mess. It will be fine I am sure. Thank you for always being with us :-)

Maybe with any extra dirt you take out from behind those out buildings, spread it along your walking path where the wood chips went, over time, that path will become higher up in elevation and water won’t puddle over it. Maybe eventually you could even relocate the extra stones as well to the walking path! I can’t believe what a huge transformation you’ve done to your land already, absolutely beautiful you guys!! 😊💚✨

"Maybe with any extra dirt you take out from behind those out buildings, spread it along your walking path where the wood chips went, over time, that path will become higher up in elevation and water won’t puddle over it.".............. What a great idea. The woodchip path is lovely and firm at the moment as we haven't had any rain really since the snow but it is due to rain for the next few days. At the moment we have a plan for the dirt but we may have extra so might just be using your idea. I also need to make some more wood chippings, not sure we have enough wood to chip though lol. Thank you so much for watching and commenting and hope everything is OK with you :-)

Those ancient walls scream of being repaired with the stones you've excavated and repointed with lime morter and the roofs put back on. Especially the high, tall building alongside the path. I can hardly wait till you strip the ivy off and we all can see how that looks like. What was it originally. This would create a magnificent area with all those reroofed and repointed buildings.
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 3 месяца назад
They really do scream that don't they and Dawn is just itching to get started with the lime pointing as soon as the weather allows. Some of the inside walls need rebuilding too, especially where the old Ash tree was. For the age they are incredible though. Although a lot of lime has washed away between the stones, there is still some lime in there, but they won't need any racking back. The smaller building with the walkway has a flat roof but it will be nice to get new roofing for it. The big outbuilding this video mainly showed will look amazing with a new roof. Thank you for watching and commenting today :-)

Thank you so much Rosanne. We knew when we got here that it was going to be a lot of work getting it under control, but with a few curve balls in there, like finding bedrock make it that little bit more interesting and challenging, but very enjoyable and a lovely way to find out everything about the land there is to know. We are learning each day, speculating each day and then finally discovering the result and believe it or not, although loose, we actually have a plan hahaha. The bedrock, at the moment, seems to be high at the right end as you look at it but really low on the opposite end of buildings (I had a little peek today). So this may answer how they build these houses and building on uneven ground using stones. We are loving it :-) More tomorrow and a new video Wednesday, hopefully see you then :-) Thank you for watching and commenting.

I remember somewhere in my history classes about how a good portion of Ireland was on hard rock and how farmers near the sea used seaweed to creat soil so they could have gardens. I’m wondering if 200+ years ago when the owners of that land built their buildings there and it was all on exposed rock and between animal dung and leaves and such the eventual built enough earth to have a garden behind the house…golly, don’t you wish the owners kept a diary or journal, but most likely the original owners were simple folk, just trying to survive. I’m wondering if the channeled out a gully in the rock from the “slurry hole”. You’ve probably already checked knowing you two. See ya Wednesday.
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 3 месяца назад
Wow I didn’t know that with the seaweed! I would think your summary of how the soil became what it is today is probably right, because I would think a lot of the soil out there has come from the last 20 or so years of the vegetation dying back, rotting down and then sprouting new life and the cycle keeps being repeated because no one is there to tend to it. Oh so many times I’ve said to Ben I wish there were records of how it looked 200 years ago around here and how the land was laid out too. I find that sort of thing fascinating. I don’t think there is a channeled out gully…but I must admit I haven’t actually checked…will have to do that once we’ve had a good bit of rain to wash all the soil off. I love your comments…I like the way your mind wanders whilst you are watching to how things were years and years ago, my mind works like that too. I have looked at all the censuses and other associated records but it’s not the same as a written account or a photograph is it? 😘

You need to find a local farmer that is upgrading to a larger tractor and wants to sell his smaller one. Or go to the rental company and see if they want to get rid of a rental. Our tractor has been a huge help on our five acres. A really sharp axe would have been great for those roots. We have dealt with a ton of stumps/roots. Your hard work shows. Looks great!❤

Thank you ❤️ We’ve only got an acre or just under an acre so I’m not sure we will need a tractor, although I can’t deny it would have come in handy sooo many times! We do have an axe but there’s also lots of stones in the soil so we didn’t want to blunt the axe as we don’t have a sharpener at the moment. 🫣

My goodness guys!!! What an extraordinary job you are doing in uncovering the base rock and the "slurry" hole... The area looks awesome and it really is going a long way to cleaning up the entrance to the garden from the outbuildings. It may take a lot longer to get it where you want it but certainly is a great start. I am so excited for you and at the same time in awe of all the energy and time you have expended to get it where it is. I hope you are very pleased with how it looks and are having a bit of a rest before beginning again tomorrow. Good evening Cristy, how are you? Thank you very much. Well we try to do a job in a normal but the job tends to then turn into use feeling the need to remove every last root, or bit of ivy in a tree, or something else. We do tend to go over the top a little bit but we just do. It doesn't matter what Dawn does, it has to be done to perfection, from cleaning the house to digging the land. We came inside early yesterday but later this evening. When I say later, we aren't talking WestCorkWander late, just later than normal hahaha. We will most certainly see you Wednesday, hopefully with a close to finished bit of land. Thank you so much Cristy :-)

Ahh Ben thanks for the shout out ☺️ Im not sure we have anymore blossom than you guys down here amd all the wind and rain today hasnt helped. Dont the stone walls look amazing, so beautiful. That heap you guys are shifting looks like a real tough one, but when you have conquered it, it will make a massive difference. I bet the cats love the garden, lots if places to hide and spy from. You could take a little off those blackcurrants that you planted, get a bit move energy to the roots rather than the shoots, as the shoots will double that height in the summer. Looking down the garden from the top, it looks like you have a big green lawn where you mowed, that will be really lovely in the summer x

Aww no I read that your area might be hit with some wind and rain. We’ve had rain most of the day today, not torrential but very welcome as we’d almost run out of water! 😳 so we’re quite pleased it came. Got up a little windy earlier but not too bad. Ahh yes those stone walls look bloody lovely 🥰 I’m quite in awe of how beautiful they are! Need some fixing up here and there but hopefully once the warmer weather gets here we can get on with doing them. Oh my goodness yes it’s been tough going….all the roots from the Ash tree had grown all that way and that’s what it mainly consisted of, in hindsight after reaching the bedrock…we can see why they found their way into that big pile of soil! I haven’t let the cats out on their own yet 🙁 they do have harnesses though lol one of them loves to go out, the other two aren’t too fussed on it lol once we get some gates around the house…I’ll be happier to let them out and about. Thank you with the blackcurrants…that’s great advice…will do that…it was a bit of an experiment as I cut some off to keep and wondered if they would take off from just putting them in the ground because they just seem to sprout out of nothing! Yes, the grass isn’t the best, mainly couch grass and doesn’t seem attached to the soil below very well lol but it looks pretty good and seems to do well even under water. Since finding the bedrock below it makes sense as to why it doesn’t root very far down 🤣 x

You really should consider a mini digger now as they can level the soft dirt out and level the land in a day. Whereas it will take you weeks do it as slow as it’s taking you with so many roots and all. A good digger handler can be very gentle when need be. If that wall is so precarious and dangerous you’re better go find out now than to have it topple over either one of you and out back working on it for weeks or months if your lucky to not get hurt too much. Be safe!
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 3 месяца назад
Hi James You are right with how careful a good handler can be. We watched the young lad doing our electric pole and he really knew how to use it. But, we have broken it's back now and hopefully tomorrow will be a big change to how it looks on the video. The corner of the building is stable enough to get it repaired / rebuilt inside before removing the pile of dirt we have left for now. It is a priority though and we are just waiting for the weather. Thanks for always watching and commenting James :-)

To get through at least some of your roots, I have always used a reciprocating saw with a "pruning" blade. Unlike most saws the dirt won't hurt the pruning blade. I've used this method for cutting tree roots and everything else.
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 3 месяца назад
Absolutely love the reciprocating saw for the this kind of work…it’s been invaluable for all the work that we’ve done on the land. I think it’s the tool we’ve used the most. I didn’t use it this time just because there were a lot of stones in the pile as well and the mattock worked really well slicing through the roots, downside is…it’s very heavy to use over and over! 😂

Hi Dawn & Ben, love watching your hard work. I think the pile of roots etc have grown from when the dung etc from the cowshed or byre was put through the window where the slates are now. The bottom one was for the slurry and the other one was where straw or bedding was used when the animals were in for the winter and to make life easier for the farmers the dung was put through the whole for quickness. I spent some years in Co Monaghan as a young child and this is what I remember. Hope that helps.

Hi Milly 😊 it is hard work but definitely worth it when you stand back and take a look at what you’ve managed to get through. Ahh yes that would make sense the soil seems very fertile around there and the worms love it! Big fat ones! That helps hugely thank you! Makes sense why such a large window too. I like learning things like this. We were amazed when we cleared that outbuilding to find all the flag stones and the slurry gulley. Such a shame when the roof fell in after clearing all the Ivy off!

You guys have made huge progress even if you don't think so, I was willing Dawn on to get to the ground level, well done you that was tough going. That area has potential to be a lovely private area with views of your vast domain. The pointy thing is one of the "fingers" of the finger-bar of your mower, depending on the length of the finger bar there could be anywhere from 15 to 20 fingers. the cutting blade was a thin strip of metal with triangular blades riveted to it which would be moved very fast from side to side by the gears of the machine, the thin gap behind the point is where the blade moved. The points (fingers) stopped the grass from just moving to the side when the blade hits it. Eventually you will find all of it. I have no clue about the wheel but if it is from a Rolls-Royce I hope you find the rest of it! Denis
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 3 месяца назад
Aww thank you Denis! It’s one of those things isn’t it? Whilst you’re in the midst of it, it feels too vast to even think you will get to the end of it, but eventually you do and it is getting there but not as quickly as our minds and bodies want it to! 🤣 oh it really was tough going and I must admit I was glad when I felt that bedrock! Well funny you should say that…as that is exactly our plan with that area, it felt the right place to do it the first time we “saw” it in May last year. Surrounded by all that magnificent stone, it’ll be lovely! 🥰 We knew you’d know what it is and fingers crossed we come across the rest on our travels around. We feel like we found the cutting blade last year but can’t remember if we kept it or not. Fingers crossed we did! Those fingers are a bit of art all by theirselves aren’t they?! Love them! Dawn and Ben. You work so hard and even though it’s back breaking stuff, you never complain and put us all to shame sitting at our laptop watching 😂 Are you friends with the farmer across the way? I would ask him if you can borrow the digger or if someone could help you dig the land. I can’t see any reason for him to object.

Haha, there are times where we take a breather and say ‘running out of steam now’ and then we get back to it 😂 because the longer we procrastinate about it the longer it takes and things taking a long time aren’t my favourite! 🤣 Yeah we’re friends with both of them and I’m sure if we asked they would be happy to help but we’re also conscious of churning up the land too much and we’re almost there now. We might once we’ve pulled it all back and decide in the dryer weather that we want to rejig things, I have a feeling we might just get machinery in then 😂 not sure we can do this again!

We have, one day we think it might be the way forward, at the end of the day we have moved forward and don't think it will help much now. The benefit of doing it manually is what we learn as we go and the bits we find while digging, maybe a coin, like today, a lump of metal something which belongs to the grass cutting machine further down the land or maybe just something else. It would have been much quicker but now we have pretty much won... I think. Thank you Mary for watching and commenting today. Hopefully see you for Wednesdays video :-)

So I think the buildings you refer to as outbuildings are probably the original farmhouse; 18th century farmhouses here in the Highlands (Scotland) were divided in two; one side for the family and one side for the animals. This looks pretty much the same layout. .. Just a suggestion here, but why don’t you hire a mini digger for a day or two to get that section cleared? You’re putting so much effort in, but a mini digger would take a lot less effort and save you load of hassle. especially with the bloody ivy!
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 3 месяца назад
Hi Joanna, thank you so much for watching and commenting. Yes you could be right with the buildings, certainly the one with the ivy on due to where it's windows are. I am not sure if anyone still alive will know the answer to if they were split, but an educated guess would be the same presumption as yours. The more we do, the more a mini digger is needed less and less. It would make work easier but we wouldn't get to pull out the little bits of history we find, none of value in the least, but a bit of the history of what was this farm. Dawns "treasures" are building up in the window at the moment and range from a nice bottle, probably of no real age to a lump of metal which is a nice shape.... oooh, she found a coin today, eyes like a hawk. If the area was scraped we would have a pile at one end to either sort through or leave or flat area covered in sticks, ivy roots and rocks and would all need sorting through. At the moment it is a controlled mess hahaha. If all of that makes sense. Thank you again for joining us :-)

Do you think you might be able to save the ivy-covered building or is it a loss? Carry on with all the hard work, guys! It's really paying off! I feel the spirit of your outbuildings saying Yay! Hahaha thank you! I have a feeling in that pile will be lots of stones from the wall and also lots of roots from the ash tree that had to be cut down. Fingers crossed for something exciting as well though! 😂 We’ve cut all the ones on the outbuilding without a roof, and before i repoint that we will carefully remove some of what we can remove without loosening the stones. The other outbuilding I was looking at today, we need to cut through those at the bottom to kill that Ivy off. We will leave most of that in place as it’s not our building and I’d hate to do something that made it drop stones. Our outbuildings are looking really good now, no Ivy on them and no earth pushed up against their walls! Really pleased to have gotten that away from the walls. ❤️

You've accomplished a huge amount. You've moved a huge amount of soil & other material, cleared the wall & the slurry hole, decapitated the self-made staging pile, created some large flat areas, and you're *down to bedrock* in several places. I keep thinking back to one of the first videos, when Dawn "discovered" that little shed on the end - a entire stone building that you hadn't even known you had. What a huge long way you've come, in really just a few months. I keep wondering, do you know what the building that runs along the roadway (the one you don't own) was used for? It looks like it's very narrow - maybe six to ten feet wide? - & I'm trying to imagine why it would built that way. For housing really skinny cows? Storing the spaghetti crop? (Of course, it's perfectly okay if you don't know.) Thanks for another video - I'll see you Wednesday!

Well….when you put it like that….it does seem a lot! Oh and the bedrock! Ben is very very excited about that! I must admit it’s lovely to see because it means there’s no more digging to be done! Yay! It seems such a long time ago that we found that other building! No, we’re not sure what that building was used for but I’m sure we could find out as we are in touch with the people who lived here before, it’s been built very well so I wonder if it was a dwelling at some point or at least part of it, but I must say I like the idea that it was built for cows that were of the smaller persuasion! Or even the spaghetti crops…that reminds me I must start planting ours! I will try and find out for you. The farmer who owns it now may know as well, normally see him most days so will see if he knows 😊 because I’d be interested too 😂 No problem at all with the video…plenty more digging to do so will “see” you Wednesday!

200 odd years ago the outbuildings didn’t have anything in front of them as far as we can tell from old maps. So I would think it might have been the main dwelling. don't be scared to clear out the area between the building where the dry stone wall is. It is most likely bedrock there too and if you chop down through the root pile without pulling at it, the wall should stand, especially with the garden wall up against it. Then you can use that area to pile stone until you are ready to work on the outbuilding. (starting at the wall dig it down as far as you can and back fill it with stone, working your way out from the wall and into the corner as deep as you can while back filling with stone as you go. 1 foot square dug out fill with stone - 1 foot square dug out fill with stone. repeat until you have cleared between the buildings where the ash was.) I'm so impressed with you both already, that is really hard work behind that building and some of that pile was already there when you got there. So many bins were filled with the junk from those buildings, If you two could clean all that you can do this no problem!

Thank you Janie. As always with the good and practical advice. I’m so scared of it all falling in, we wonder if the timber we have within the building is actually holding it place too. 🫣 I might try and do what you suggested as it will make it a lot easier to have that area cleared to be able to get a proper look at it. To be able to repair it we have to empty the outbuilding too, that could take some time and definitely a job for the warmer weather lol I’m so looking forward to rebuilding that wall but also so scared at the same time of getting it wrong! I was thinking of liming what already stands from the inside of the outer wall to secure that first and then start the slow process of rebuilding the inner wall bit by bit with the rubble course in between. How do you think that will go? 😘
@SweetOne.
@SweetOne. 3 месяца назад
@@thecornerhouseproject Lime pointing the outer wall from the inside and then from the outside before repairing the inside wall would be the best way to go, but without that dirt moved first it's hard to say if the stones are properly in place to actually do that. The outbuilding wall looks so much better with the ivy removed. Your house and outbuildings are certainly on a solid base. I'm wondering if you will have to do some sort of surface channel to direct water that comes off the road away from the house. Hard to see where the water is supposed to go with the absence of a ditch along the lane.

@thecornerhouseproject 3 месяца назад
Good afternoon John, hope you are well. Oh it really is on solid ground. When they did the electric pole we didn't feel a single vibration in the house, it is on one solid lump. We think you could be right John with a surface channel. Once we have all of the grass cleared from the edges of the house we will be able to see exactly where the water goes, how deep we might be able to go with a channel or something and go from there. In an ideal world it will just flow straight under the house and out the other side... with out luck though... it is unlikely. As always John, thank you so much for watching and commenting :-)

You think it’s a small improvement but look at the big picture of all you have accomplished. It is a fair old size of a building, so you’re probably right. I’ve seen pictures of buildings like this one where they housed the people on the one side and the animals on the other, the other outbuilding is fairly big too. The one without a roof has had a doorway modification in the past too so it would be good to rebuild that to how it should be and also the one with the flat roof we’ve been told that may have been a double gable too, so again that would be nice, if our skills stretch to it, to put that back too. Fingers crossed we can do a good enough job on them to get them back to how they would have looked. Okie doke will have a check of the spam. I don’t think I’ve checked the mail at all today so it might even be in the inbox 😂 Thanks Mitch 😊

Hi Dawn and Ben where did you find your land ?. How much did you buy the land for after solicitors fees and taxes?. Every blessing to you both. 😊

Hi Wendy Thank you very much, it is all a labour of love, slow but getting there. Dawn used daft.ie to find houses / cottages with land and must have looked at well over one hundred places before we got down to just seven. And for five days we went down the West(ish) coast looking at them for three days and just looking and traveling for a couple. It was a brilliant five days. I think the solicitor was about 2000 GBP if I remember rightly, or maybe it was Euro? Thank you for watching and commenting :)

Ooh we’ve found sooo many little bits and pieces and some not so little. We did a few videos quite early on where I show what I found as we went along…. I will see if I can link you to some of them. Finding all sorts again at the moment because of digging the land. I love it….Ben calls it Tat…I like to refer to it as Treasure! 😊

Not sure if this helpful...I've used a reciprocating saw with longer blades to get through big clumps of roots in the ground. It really helps to loosen up the soil. However, any reciprocating saw blades you use for this purpose will not be good for anything else.
@thecornerhouseproject

Very helpful because we do use one of those for branches and roots….but I’d never thought of getting a longer blade to be able to get through big clumps! That will be very helpful for trying to get through that big pile at the end of the larger outbuilding when we come to,have to move that pile to fix the wall. So thank you for that 🤩

Hi Sandy, I wish Dawn would slow down sometimes, she wears me out. The drawer back to a machine is the mess it will make just getting on the land. The tractor dents are still in the top area which fill nicely with water each time it rains lol. A machine would be lovely, but we are getting there. Hope you are having a nice day over there in sunny CA. See you Wednesday :-)

I imagine getting the correct pitch on the drainage to fix the bogginess of the area will help a great deal!! Good luck with the pruning, too :)

Once we have the area cleared / done how we have planned, we can see where the really wet spots are and see what we can do with it to hopefully direct it to the ditch. Thank you for watching and commenting Catherine :-)

Hello there would it be possible to dig a trench at the gable end of the house and fit a french drain take the water away from the house
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 3 месяца назад
Thanks for watching and commenting :-) We are hoping we can make at least some form of channel from the road and then down the sides of the house, finally into the ditch between the outbuildings. Clearing the remaining grass and mud up against the house is on the "soon" list to be done. At this point we will have a clear idea of what we will be able to do. We do think just clearing the grass will make a difference to any remaining damp at the base of the walls. Fingers crossed. Thanks again :-)

I suggest painting the handles of your garden tools bright red or fluorescent yellow or pink. Some hi-vis color not green!

I love this idea, because a dirty brown colour isn’t easy to find in the middle of all the mud and beige and green colours! Haha

I wish the owner of the falling ruin outbuilding would sell it to you for a 1$ so you could make use of it ! They obviously couldnt give a toss about it letting it go to ruin for decades like they have .❤

@@thecornerhouseproject I guess maybe I'm being harsh but my comment was really off the top of my head wishful thinking for you guys betterment. Not to be evil and take something precious from somebody. Actually we had each neighbor on either side of our horse pasture ask if we wanted to fence in their empty over grown back pastures. They were tired of finding people with brush mowing tractors to keep the grass down and they each liked watching our horses from their back porches . So something a property owner might never believe could happen happened for us we got almost a whole extra acre for feed . God bless anyway ❣️

Hi, a daily video for 20 minutes was quite easily done. But 3 days of work in 20 minutes is a lot of footage not used. Speeding it up via RU-vid settings is an option one commenter uses, or maybe watch some today and some tomorrow? Just thoughts though :-) Thank you for watching and commenting and sorry it is a bit long :-)

Hahaha yeah very tired! It’s been a hard few days, we cannot deny! There isn’t any well as far as we know, the previous owners, whose family have lived on this plot of land for at least 200 years never had a well, their water came from a well further down the lane until the rain water tank was put in, maybe around the 1980’s.
