In September 2014, Parks Canada announced it had found the wreck of the HMS Erebus - one of the two ships of the doomed Franklin expedition. The ship rests under several metres of water off the coast of King William Island, Nunavut. In April 2015, Parks Canada underwater archaeologists headed back to the wreck site to further explore the ship. Marty Magne, Director of Archaeology and History Branch at Parks Canada, spoke with Canada’s History about the exciting find.

I can't even imagine what these men went through, back in the 1840's. The mixture of freezing cold, led poisoning, hunger, darkness and fear is the recipe for a true nightmare!

Follow up video and still footage is long overdue. All that seems to be available now seems to be all from the initial discovery and not from more detailed and interior exploration of the ship. I don't know why this is, perhaps weather or money to do these just hasn't cooperated. It seems like a growing mystery on top of the decades of mystery about Franklin's last journey.

Raise it up already, it belongs in a museum

The air will decay it. Its preserved in the water.

Not just the freezing salty water protecting it, there is very very little oxygen in that water. It will also take years to properly inspect it as in this video. Not to mention it would cost a crazy amount to raise it, millions and millions. Would be an amazing feat though if they did it though.

There are ways to preserve it if they bring it up just like they did the Vasa but if we leave it there the ice will surely destroy it overtime

Just goes to show that any serious historical researchers or student of historiography will take native oral traditions seriously

Is King William island restricted to natives and government officials? It would be cool to visit if not.

I’ve sailed my 28 foot boat to beechy island in the right weather and even found some old tin probably from the canned food on the expedition, the graves are also very moving to see but I can’t answer your question I believe you can probably go there

What the hell are they doing with these ships. Raise the ships. Find the Documents and possible glass plate photographs. You need to up date every 2 weeks. Your project is lacking online outreach......

The air will decay the ships much quicker than the cold water will with not a lot of o2 in it, everything else I agree with you on they need to update people I’m fascinated with the Franklin expedition. I wish they would go in croziers cabin on the terror already

@@Alan-ej6wb The ships are being damaged by tide, ice and time. The mary rose , Vasa were conserved successfully. This project is starting to smell like lack of leadership from both Government and project leaders.

@@1220b guess I was a bit sarcastic there. I for one would love to see any salvageable documents and whatnot that could be retrieved.

Dude is dreaming if he thinks they would find a paper log book in a ship wreck hundreds of years old.
