Unexpected Colorado Part 3: Visiting Garden of the Gods

When I traveled to Colorado, I was expecting to film epic mountain vistas, but a run-in with altitude sickness foiled all my plans and left me scouring the map for lower-elevation places to explore. Something I almost overlooked down in the corner of the map rang a bell...Garden of the Gods...and I had a hazy recollection it was some kind of rock formation. You know I can't resist a good geological oddity, and it wasn't terribly far away, so I went to check it out.

I know this episode is on the short side, but in what turned into an entirely unplanned, improvised trip, this location made the most sense as its own standalone chapter in the series, separate from Pike National Forest and separate from the next part of the journey you'll be seeing soon. I've squeezed in a few extra mid-week videos this month and will try to have one more for you at some point in the next few days as well. Thanks for understanding, and thanks for watching! 🙂

It is your channel, and your explorations, no need to justify where you go. Tourist's spots along the way are great and would be a shame to avoid, simply beacuses they dont match some arbitary definition. That was new to me and interesting. Keep up the good work.

You still have the advantage, Don. For most tourists, this is all they have. You on the other hand have the means and ability to get to places where most tourists cant. The best way to deal with tourists is to remember that you're all there to see the same thing.

I grew up in the Denver area and back then it was a real nice place to be. Now there is bumper to bumper traffic 24/7 and has basically turned into another LA. This is true for most of the front range.

I dig how you decided to leave the background noise (tourists talking etc.) in your scenery shots. Assuming you consciously did that and I thought it worked really well.

Lots of people but it’s still a great place. I climbed all over this place growing up. My grandparents lived within walking distance. It’s busy but hopefully lots of people loving it means lots of votes to protect it. Thanks for showing this cool park, Donald!

I have to admit I feel like at 6:10 you missed the perfect Steve Irwin impersonation.... 😂 I'm enjoying your series on Colorado adventures gone awry. Thanks for all you do.
@softroadingthewest
@softroadingthewest 9 месяцев назад
LOL...so here's a little Steve Irwin story, sorta. In 2016, I took my (then 10-yr-old) daughter Lucie out to her favorite restaurant after a dance performance. We were sitting there and Lucie was all, "Dad, that's Bindi Irwin!" Steve's daughter Bindi was freshly famous after appearing on (and winning) Dancing With The Stars in 2015, which of course, having a dancer daughter, we watched every week, so we all knew who Bindi Irwin was. At first I was sure Lucie must be mistaken, but then I remembered that Steve's wife Terri is actually from our town (Eugene Oregon) and must still have family here, so I looked closer and sure enough, Lucie was correct, it was indeed Bindi. We chatted with her briefly and got a photo of Lucie with Bindi. 🙂

Garden of the gods was cool. Christine said what makes it more impressive is that they are out by themselves, not up against a mountain range. We don’t like hoards of people either; but, like you said, when we are there we are one of the hoards. 🤪

People aside, that is really cool to see in Colorado! Sometimes we just have to put up with the crowds to see some cool stuff, kinda like Crater Lake here at home, or when we went to Yosemite. Totally worth it now & then.

I live about 1 hour north of there I don't go in to the valley at all anymore I would rather go up to the old Sugar Pine Railroad ROW to the old look out tower above Incline. Its a must travel trip and you see half dome from there Epic. Don't go if you don't have high clearance 4x4. There isn't a back road in that area I have not traveled.

How cool that you were in my city, Colorado Springs! There are one or two trails in GotG that most tourists don’t know about that don’t get as much foot traffic. And during the Fall/Winter months, it drops off significantly. But yeah, during the warmer months it’s pretty much crawling with people. And speaking of wildlife, we have also seen a bobcat or two in the park. Even got close enough to one to take a selfie. 😅

Nice video considering the circumstances. We lived in The Springs for three years. Lots of people, both local and tourists. Cost of living is nutty. Recently we moved to the Loveland area and enjoy it much more. Wish we could have given you a tour of the lesser known areas here in CO. It’s hard to find places without all the traffic, but they’re out there. Even if you’re just looking for suggestions, keep us in mind the next time you’re out this way.

I was there when I was around 17ish or so. The visitor center didn't look like that back then. And while I'm not one to want to be around tourists myself if the park wasn't there, it would be some high end houses and would be in ruins. So this is the lesser of two evils

I was fortunate enough to visit Garden Of The Gods way back in 1971 while living in Colorado Springs for awhile. Back then, it was mostly undeveloped and all the pathways to interesting areas were just basic dirt. Crowds were non-existent. The city was just starting to turn it into a tourist attraction. In my opinion, they should have left it alone, but politicians are always driven by the prospect of money.
