Unexpected Findings: Anbernic RG35XX H/+ Modified Stock OS Comparison

To date the most optimized Firmware for the Anbernic RG35XX H/+ is exactly the opposite of everything we have come to know to be true in past Emulation Handhelds. This is the first series of devices we have seen continued support directly from Anbernic and it’s currently out pacing developers of custom firmware builds. Don’t get me wrong it’s far from perfect, not recognized like GarlicOS, not nearly as pretty as Batocera Koriki or simplified as much as MuOS. It’s pretty basic though getting visual improvements and most importantly optimized to use all the features of the handhelds efficiently.
What if I told you the most optimized firmware for the Anbernic RG35XX devices right now is the StockOS that comes with your device… or the StockOS after you update it anyways?
Have you tried different firmware builds for you Anbernic RG35XX H/+? What is your favorite so far?

This video is super handy!!! Any chance you could do a more indpeth vid on the Theme tool and the ports? I want to make my own themes and with ports which ones require the extra setup and how to do that would be great! even where you can get more ports

That is a solid question. I just got another 35XX-H I’m molding now so I can split the 4 different OS’s I’m texting between the 2 of them.

I have a RG35XX Plus. IMO Batocera with its slow start up and battery eating traits, it’s a no-go for me. I really liked MinUI, and no dreamcast im OK with but no NDS is a deal breaker for me. MuOS loads quick, has AMAZING performance and high emulation customizability. Currently Im sticking to MuOS on my RG35XX Plus

These are all the reasons I like the modified version of StockOS. It’s the most stable OS that you don’t sacrifice features for right now

Do you copy the stock OS onto a more stable SD card? I get my 35xx h soon and I'm thinking I'll just keep the stock OS, but I want peace of mind that it won't corrupt. Is this as simple a process as copy paste? Any help would be appreciated

You can save the stock SD as an image file if you want it for later. I. Guessing it won’t be updated to the newest updates depending how long it’s been in a warehouse. I would 100% get a new card. Then use the directions at the beginning of this video to download and install the updated OS. The cards that come with all the Chinese handhelds are garbage

I would. And plan on doing it when my 64GB card arrives as they only give you a 16GB and 64GB options. Which is a shame as I'd just use my 256GB for everything. Also MegaDownload is a pile of wank. Having to wait 5 hours to download 2 of 10 packages. Is just bizzare 🤦🏻‍♂️

I have this collection of tools - Win32DiskImager, balenaEtcher, guiformat, SD Card Formatter, and rufus. Win32DiskImager will both read an SD card or flash drive to an img file and it can write an img file to a device. Note: when Win32DiskImager creates an imgae file you actually have to add the ".img" extension otherwise it will have no file extension. Both Balena Etcher and Rufus will write an img file to a device. guiformat and SD Card Formatter both format a device to FAT32. When writing an image to a device TRIPLE CHECK that you are writing to the correct device. They will happily write over a drive you that didn't intend to.

I'm still waiting for my device. But if I do this, and apply the modded OS, will I be able to run a 1 SD card setup? Because I heard that the stock OS wont let you use the remaining space on the one SD card. My device comes with 2 cards, but I'm gonna replace it with 1 SanDisk.

There are ways to run 1SD card. However in my experience you are best off running 2. If nothing else less to worry about when swaps g ROMs around. It also gives you the option to try different OS’s more freely with moving your library around

I followed your tutorial on my RG35XX-H and got to the 11:46 marker of your video. The RG35XX-H asked to reboot and I did, when it restarted it vibrated on the "Anbernic" screen and the LED began flashing yellow and would not boot into the OS. I pressed the restart and when that didn't work, I powered off and powered it back on, same issue wouldn't boot into the OS. I have refreshed by Sandisk 32GB microSD card with the stock Mar 30th stock firmware and I'm up and running again. @CellPhish Any idea why it won't boot correctly?

I’m testing a different handheld so I don’t have my 35XX h with me,e today. Odd because I almost always carry it. I’ll grab it tomorrow and see if I can figure it out

Sold my H/+ because was never satisfied with the os, the only one that has some stability was MuOS, also, you are from America ? ETSY dosent ship to Europe and hate that also, cant get any customization to my device since.

That tracks, honestly the stock OS hasn’t had stability issues it just hasn’t left much for customization. That’s why I got interested in the modifier for the stock os. I do live in America so I can normally get Etsy stuff relatively easy. Sucks that’s not an option for you. Have you looked at ordering from Sakura Mods? I be;I’ve they are based in France. Might be an option getting custom buttons in the EU. That’s where I got the PS buttons on this device.

I'd tried using MuOS on my new RG35XXH but had issues with sound. So I reverted to the latest version of Stock OS by reinserting my original 64GB card. I then reformatted my 256GB card that had MuOS to FAT32 but now the console refuses to recognise it 🤦🏻‍♂️. Any ideas?

There is a flash option on the handheld but I think what your problem is under settings you need to point it at TF2. Just an FYI I’ve been swapping TF1 cards testing these different firmwares and they seem to use the same rom file structure so I haven’t had to make changes to TF2 I just load it with each firmware. Once you get your games working you should try adding the Mod I did in this video if you play games on Sony systems. It does a pretty solid optimization for those and a decent opt for N64 as well.

@@CellPhish thanks buddy. That was the plan. I just received my console on Monday. Managed to bag it from TikTok shop for £41 which is almost half off of everywhere else I've seen it. Have not been disappointed so far. Last emulation Handheld I had was the GP2X in 2005. Things have changed 😂

@@CellPhish where about in settings would I point it to the second card? Before trying MuOS it would ask me which card I wanted to go into. Now it's not. It's as if the console isn't mounting it. As mentioned earlier I quick formatted the card to fat32 after reverting back to stock. Would deleting the config file in retroarch fix this issue?

@@CellPhish finally managed to fix the issue. With mini partition manager I deleted all of the card's partitions then created a new one allocating the maximum amount of space. When completed the console saw the second card and created the directory tree.

I bought a samsung 128 gb card and was planning on 1 card method is this possible and can i add roms to the same card trying to figure this out ive had my devuce for 3 days and still havent turned it on if you can help please and ty!!?

You can use one card of you want. I personally would run the OS off a 16GB card because you sacrifice space for the OS. You need to install the OS on your card and then use a partition wizard to free up the additional space to its own partition for your ROMs
