Unexpected from Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke 

Have to say at the end of this video that I understood much more from you in relation to the average golfer than any other of the so called RU-vid golf stars. Your tests and presentation speaks to 90% of golfers and their real world experience. Other RU-vid stars are hitting 280 yard carries and 320 yards total. We can all believe in hopes for the future but this is not reality for most golfers. Now I don't understand how selling dreams gets more views than reliable reality. We're a bunch of wannabee wallies.

I went for a driver fitting thinking I may get a Taylormade or a Ping (but I was open to other brands) and as soon as I hit the Ai Smoke Max, myself and the fitter knew it was the one. Dispersion for me was so much better than other clubs. It was a surprise but I love it!

As always great review Andy, we average golfers can relate much more to your overview of these new clubs. Looking forward to all of the new club testing content.

Resubscribed. I was one of the ones turned off when your channel changed earlier last year. I still watched from time to time, but this recent change is so much better. Appreciate the honesty, scenery, and weather in your new videos. Where I’m from I never see this so it’s a treat for me. Andy, a great review especially presenting the numbers for the different heads with your swing. I loved your comment on wanting to see on course hits V indoor data, this is a concern I have on fitting studios we are being told by the computer how our ball would fly, actually getting data while being able to see the true flight as the ball sails into the range or the course is what I like to see. Must admit I was heard the “sweet spot being the whole face” and seeing the carry data V strike spot image and I thought bollocks! To me a sweet spot means an area within the area being measured, we all know what it feels like hitting a ball and when we hit it, as it’s almost feeling as though you have not hit it. Nice to see they are developing a club where the ball goes further the further you are away from the centre of the club face, now that could be the club for the average golfers 😁 ( at HC 26 not there yet) Must admit the new season of clubs being launched means there are a lot of videos I won’t bother watching can’t afford to replace what I have and typically marginal gains V existing products Keep the videos coming good to see you out on the course in rubbish weather even if it was only for 9 shots, my course been shut 90% of days since late November

Andy very thorough review as expected from you 😜. I’ve watched all the other top RU-vidrs who have reviewed this line of clubs and your review stands above all others. Less than a dozen shots out on the course and I know exactly what each club does out of the box. I agree with you that hitting clubs inside only leaves a lot to be desired. A few years ago Golf Galaxy here in the US had a program where you could rent a driver for $20 and use it for a as couple days on course to see if it performed in a real world situation - not just on the simulator. With Covid I believe they did away with that program and that’s the main reasons why I’m still playing the Epic Flash. At current prices it’s too much of a gamble to purchase a club just based on indoor performance. HNY sir and thank you!!!

Andy. Great review brother. I love watching your reviews and listening to your opinions and thoughts on the clubs since you hit them like a normal player and not a “pro” ….which is a great thing. Since the flight, sound, feel and distance is much more realistic for normal players …. Always appreciate you grinding and working hard in the nasty weather. I have a driver that I played for 16 years that was a $500 driver back in the day and has a nice $400 Harrisson Shaft in it. I also played the rouge st max for a year and last years Paradym for a few months. Funny thing is my best shots with all three drivers all go the same distance give or take a few yards.

I like your reviews, Andy, because you speak for us regular guy golfers. I think these drivers look fantastic but the sticker price is too much for me. I just bought a Cobra ltdx driver for a significant discount and I'm happy.

Great review and very relateable. Currently playing Epic Max LS but need more foregiveness, lower spin and a bit draw bias. Amazingly similar numbers in your impact location comparison with numbers. Same shaft in all 3 drivers?

I agree about the looks. I believe the Smoke refers to the grayed out crushed carbon on the bottom. Especially don't like the look of that. If they can convince golfers that the face will let you hit the ball far and straight from any part of the face then they'll sell a lot of them. I'm very skeptical about that, but it would be hard to resist at least testing it.

Are those sheep? You are a trooper doing this review. I'm not a fan of the "bag and rack appeal" in all aspects. Topside, I find it too busy and distracting. However, the results are certainly positive. If I bought one, I'd have to get a spray can of black paint out...lol Thanks for your honest and thoughtful insights. Agree with you 100% on the outside vs inside testing. I hate hitting into a screen....

Andy - love the videography and commentary and you are the guy who gave me the nudge to buy a LAB putter, but get that belt buckle ahead of your shirt buttons and get away from that fade/slice.

For me the look and sound works. You could well be right and the lack of jailbreak has changed the sound. They certainly seem to perform.

Well done for braving the British weather Andy. Just as a discussion point and not a criticism, don’t we see now that the manufacturers completely ignore the governing bodies? The mantra of the R&A equipment division states “To maintain the skill of the game in the hands of the golfers and not in the hands of the equipment manufacturers”. Surely with this year’s marketing messages, the manufacturers are stating that they have designed a face which reduces the need for golfers to hone the necessary skills to hit the middle of the club face. I think we can perhaps agree that the power of the game has shifted well away from the governing bodies and is firmly in the hands of the manufacturers. Just a point of discussion.

Hi Andy, i currently play a Ping G425SFT for its forgiveness (and it has been/is fantastic for me (>70% fw hit) so I say “absolute nonsense” to TOO forgiving 😂 i imagine you are of a similar mindset since you love the mini driver. Will be interesting to see what goes in your bag this year.

I personally like the look, especially the blue weights over the gold colored ones from the Rogue and first Paradym. What i absolutely hate, is the white in the head cover.

Andy, I used to think a bit like your mention there of are we relying on the club face for too much help? Then why can't everyone hit the sweet spot on blade irons? 😁 But then we all can't practice or play 8-10 hours a day like a pro. So, any little help helps. I'm interested in the Max. But we'll see if I really drop the cash.

Great content and probably the best evaluation I’ve seen. Like you I am put off by the appearance of this club. Not a fan of forged carbon at all. However I’m really liking the face on this club. Maybe time to lay the Rouge driver down

Can I ask you what shaft -weight - loft - you were using, please.. Your ball speeds are exactly the same as mine.. Ony differnce is i launch the ball a good bit higher on average.. thank you

I don’t tend to switch brands often, but i have bought Callaway drivers and woods previously - always purchased on fitting as the models i have gotten on with the best with have never visually appealed to me

Quite admire the muted sound. Must better than the saucepan sound from previous generations.

Think that Max D may fit a lot of power faders out there. Seems to give good performance for a draw biased driver

I believe Americans refer to a great drive with expressions such as "really smoked that". Perhaps that could be a contribution to the brand name.

Would upgrading from an old M4 driver really make a difference? Serious question from someone who may try to upgrade soon.

Watched Peter finch review aswell and he struck them all over the face and found all were a lot more forgiving Also commentated on the sound duller Cheaper than last year so ripped of with pricing last year ?

My speed is only slightly higher than yours, about 102. I vary greatly on location. I will have to consider this club as my driver is about 4 years old. and no, there is no such thing as too much forgiveness, I proudly play Cleveland Halo Launcher irons, I have no shame, just a 9 handicap. I am too old for pride, that stuff is too expensive. Thank you for a review that helps us mere mortals as opposed to the DeChambeaus of the world that could beat us with a baseball bat.

My interpretation of the name is that it refers to the American slang for hitting a long straight drive "I really smoked that one". Could be wrong of course.

Removing the jailbreak changed the sound.

I played a year with the Rogue ST max driver with jailbreak and I sold it on after. Every once in a while I would get a weird, knuckle ball effect off the club face. Never had that issue with a driver before or since. I agree about the look of the new Ai Smoke, but from what little I have seen of reviews, the new max version might be a return to Callaway for me.

It’s also three very different SHAFTS!

To explain the use of "smoke"- where there is smoke there is fire, a really hot woman is described as "smokin", When two cars face off and one wins, it is said that he "smoked" the other , when you are on a desirable ascent in life you are "smokin", , etc. these are used quite frequently in the U.S., so the use of Smoke in the name is immediately understood here. Start using it yourself to describe your golf shots that deserve it- such as " I really smoked that drive"

this is gonna be unpopular, but.. I'm not a huge fan of the look at address? the top line seems odd and the shiny carbon fibre finish may reflect the sun? if it works and the claims are true then it'll be worth it for some people I guess..

Shelf appeal looks a bit poor, that smoke finish on the bottom to my eyes just looks as though someone needs to give it a good clean. Top view is OK, bit too much gloss for me, but not awful although the top does look as though Callaway have borrowed visual ideas from other brands. Performance is solid, not convinced that it is really any better than a lot of other drivers. The draw bias head is the most interesting

The name Smoke comes from the smokey look of the bottom of the driver.......Also, there may be a subconscious play on words, "you'll smoke the ball", with this driver.

To say the look of the botton is unique it putting in nicely, they are the hideous and gaudy looking.

Don’t tell me everyone’s handicaps to plummet, hitting every fairway.

If they are designed by AI why are the so expensive. Also these companies should only allowed to bring out new drivers every couple of years. Unless they were far cheaper

The Smoke name annoys me immensely. It's all marketing BS, as they cannot keep pulling out the plus 10 yards line anymore. £500! How many shots will it save you? Nevertheless, i love to watch you review them and all the other clubs. We can relate to you much better as a real golfer.

You don’t know what the term “Smoke” refers to cuz you’re a country lad not an urban lad. In the urban vernacular the term Smoke refers to ferocity. A severe beat down in any sport means that the loser got smoked by the competition. A judge that hands down a harsh sentence to a defendant means the defendant got smoked or the judge smoked his boots. I’m sure that you’ve heard of the former heavyweight boxing champion Joe Frazier. Because of his ferocious boxing style he was minted with the nickname Smokin’ Joe Frazier. Do you now get why Callaway used the adjective Smoke. It did so to make the driver sound crazy good, as in, it will be ferociously good and Smoke all of the competition.

Too much tech….possibly. Will your ‘average’ mid to high HCP golfer realize the diff in distance between the this and say a Maverick? Gut feeling says no. What I get from this is play your own game. Not the game the advertising wants you to play. If your single digit HCP, I’d likely say yes. Go for it. If not…..like me…..maybe spend your cash on an area of the game you need to change.
