My mum got an allotment for the first time in February and has been watching your videos incessantly. I went with her today to help her set up a couple of raised beds, and as she was transferring her onions from the greenhouse to the beds, she kept just saying "wack em in". I burst out laughing because I've never heard her say that before and she has 100% gotten that from you. Me and my mum both love the channel.

The difference is, Monty Don has an entire team of people supporting him + a budget that is probably in the 7 figures to produce. Additionally, I suspect they "fake" scenes when necessary, or at the very least only focus on what has gone well while ignoring the failures. I haven't been that impressed by Gardener's World, there's often more focus on sob stories of the people they have on than the actual gardening. There's more informational content in a 20 minute youtube video by someone like Charles Dowding than there is in half a season of Gardener's World imo.

Emma after a big slug attack last year, I have been soaking cotton balls in peppermint oil, put the balls in a small bowl and I left the bowls around my crops, it’s amazing keeps slugs, snails cats and squirrels away. They hate the smell. I haven’t seen one yet.. Could be a good idea for your poly tunnel 👍

Great vid, thank you, seen several now and it's lovely to see your allotment developing. On the blue water pipe net construction, I use the full bamboo length on the sides to provide a stronger structure against winds, and cable ties to hold the bamboos in place. I've got cherry tree envy as well, mines just two years old.😊

Lovely vid, Emma. Definitely sowing cosmos (again, was far too early) and cucumbers this week. You’ve given me hope. My gardening friends said not to bother, but now I will!

Put a pot over you rhubarb to restrict the light to force it to grow a little quicker. I cover mine each year (in an old barrel) and have already had many harvests from it.
@emmasallotmentdiaries
@emmasallotmentdiaries Год назад
Great tip, thank you! x
@DuffPharming
@DuffPharming Год назад
I think it is too early to force. The rhubarb needs to photosynthesise to store energy. Resist picking too much or even any this year. Leave the sticks on and you will strengthen the plant. Next year let it grow again and the crown will get bigger. You can pick some sticks. The following year you could force it. But only force it once every 2 or 3 years otherwise you will deplete it’s energy. In several years it will be much bigger and harvests will be awesome. Long live rhubarb potato!!
@Bracebarian

Good point, only force established plants.

When growing your sweetcorn, you can grow them in toilet roll tubes and when you transplant them, you just put the whole tube on the ground and they will grow really well and the tube will decompose.

You will find many gardeners check weather forecasts for future reference, the frost had been forecast for at least 4 days before Sunday and Monday .If you know it is coming you can take appropriate action to save your tender plants . Your Rhubarb could be going to flower if it is a flower break it off at the stem NOT CUT IT you don’t want your plant to flower and go to seed, and don’t cover the first year to force just let it grow at its own speed for at least 12 months and don’t harvest any this year . Put some of your Sweetcorn in a sealed tub Chinese takeaway type on damp kitchen roll in a warm place airing cupboard is good for 3 or 4 days ,once chitted place in pots of compost will be through in a couple of days keep away from any cold as they are very tender.

Well done on your subscribers, but thoroughly deserved Emma. I did fleece my potatoes, they're a bit taller than yours and they still got touched with the frost. The next morning some of the leaves were drooping. I cut those off today. Dont know if that was the right thing to do, but Google said more shoots will come. I think the potatoes will be ok as they were planted quite deep. I think we're in for one more frost up here. I just want it to warm up! Here's to more sunny days x

I jumped the gun on planting out a lot of my garden this year.........as usual. Lost my tomatoes, green beans, cucumbers, and squash plants. Fortunately, I always have replacement plants already started. This Missouri weather can be very unpredictable at best. Glad you made it without damage, Emma.

Same with me. I 'usually' (this is my 3rd year gardening) sow my seeds first week of March, this year I started a month early and began to harden off my tomatos, dahlia and celery 3 weeks ago, my tallest (leggiest) tomatos spent about a week outside in the miserable still-breaking-into-Spring-South-London-weather. They were miserable and enduring but growth completely stalled. I've now put everything in a large grow tunnel clotche, that's been lined with fleece and after a week the tomatos are growing side shoots. I've definitely learnt my lesson about sowing too early, and imaging weather that wasn't there yet.

You may have been able to save those cucumbers. The amount of times that I have saved a dehydated tomato, celery, dahlia... seedling when it is flopped over, stems completely dehydrated, tepid colour, leaves dried out and looks dead are countless. I don't think you had a dehydration issue, but I've saved smaller seedlings in far worse condition.

Thought about sowing sunflowers as you would at home in pots, but then leaving them in polytunnel? I have the same problem of bad light at home (only east-facing windows). I sow seeds at home then take them to the polytunnel a few days after they've germinated. Don't know whether I'm right to do that!!!!! But it seems to work for me (in Bristol).
