I'm the expert after all lol You are missing a massive chunk of information by only looking at English sources. Eric Chahi's autobiography and several obscurer interviews covers the Spielberg and DreamWorks (hes the founder, thats the connection) movie plans in much more detail than English sources. Dreamworks was interested and Jeffery Katzemberg was more involved in this than Spielberg. There was also a significant amount of problems with the old publisher Virgin Interactive. The founder harassed and hassled the team to abandon work on the game and sell the rights to dreamworks but Eric put his foot down. Also mentioned in this book. The book is called in french (journey of an indie game developer) i think. But it was published by Pix In Love. It only had a physical french publishing run. I also must apologize because a significant amount of the research I've done and links I've compiled was lost when my old tumblr was deleted. I was going to try and go back into my archives and compile my stuff but my life was far from good at the time. The boobs thing and people freaking out about it is really funny to me. This game is French. And theres significantly less cultural hangups about prudishness. French youtube poop creators actually get mad because they get censored for including nudity in their silly videos. The timeline of the nipple being censored and wethwr Amazing did it preemptively could be either or. Because yeah. French people are aware that americans freak out if they see a boob. In certain ads the game was also advertised as having a T rating before the official E rating. One last important thing about reliable sources. The claim that "Eric Chahi regretted that death animation" is straight up some asshole lying. A troll on reddit made that up. The guy who made up that claim is a pathological liar that was banned from the HoD subreddit for making shit up lol. BurningExeter is not to be trusted in discussion of this game for any reason. Not to go into too much depth but he's really sus.
Gonna add to that, the game boy color port was actually an GBA port, was announced in 2001 but was cancelled at an unknown date, check the lost media wiki for more information
I have pinned this comment as you are right, I did try to look at French sources but it was beyond me. I think this extra context is great and helpful. Future projects I will reach out to more discord servers and subreddits. I was hesitant before as it's hard to know who to trust. But this feedback and context is helpful and interesting. I hope you enjoyed the video nonetheless and can see that I did put time into the research despite the mixing bits and bobs. Also the other video is much more professional but also much longer, and the ADHD issues mean I would probably chunk it into bits if I was a watcher, I understand fully.
Also I was half suggesting that there is a less prudish nature to Europe and especially France. I am in talks to get an article about this point commissioned - using these nipples as a case study. Hopefully somewhere noteworthy will take it up
The rating of this game just proves how flawed a system like this can be. They seem very binary; for instance if you had Andy get cut on his chest and showed blood, that would be an instant T rating I'd imagine. But because there's no blood whatsoever, it's considered cartoon violence. But if you don't look at it objectively and instead subjectively, you are witnessing an innocent child have his spine snapped, turn limp and then eaten - only to then be digested by some monster. For me (especially as a kid) my imagination goes wild with that imagery. It's freaking horrifying. For me, the idea of being a child that is devoured by a monster, is far more gruesome and harrowing than if you were playing something like Mortal Kombat and watching a character have their spine ripped out. Ironically, the latter is the cartoon violence to me. The perfect example of this, where the 'checkbox system' didn't work AT ALL is "A Dogs Life' on PS2. The ending showed the villain getting thrown into a machine and turned into dogfood. No actual gore or the procedure is shown, but just the IMPLICATION is enough to spark the imagination and if you read the comments section on any video that shows the ending. It's filled with adults who played the game as children saying that the ending scarred them. Like, I watched films like Highlander and ALIEN as a kid and I was fine. But then I watched films from Don Bluth like All Dogs Go To Heaven and A Land Before Time and there's imagery in those movies that still freak me out to this day. Nowadays they call this 'mild peril' and I can say, that if a film had 'mild peril' it was gonna mess me up more than Robocop.
I'm currently working on an article on this idea and actually surprised how diplomatic some things are but I guess the more stuff that gets made the less context is taken into account
First off another awesome video the fact you made it with ADHD is incredible you are a legend but I will point out the Wizard of Oz comparisons with Heart of Darkness 1st both protagonists have a dog, 2nd they were both taken to another world because of natural phenomena at least one of the two in the game, 3rd both protagonists made friends in the world they were both story it my not be 3 in the game but if they had time the dev team would put more things I. The game like more levels and story, both stories have a villain who are connected to a character that mirrors t a bad person in there life before the story starts for example both the mean old man and lady in there in each story hate the protagonist in one reason or other and they have a much evil version in the other world the story takes place plus there names are just there title the Wicked Witch of the East or just the Witch and the Dark Master or just the Master and lastly both stories end with it being just a dream and learning a something in the end one being there is no place like home and one to not to be scared of the dark
YES! HoD is less a reference to Wizard of Oz and more the same type of real but fantastical story. I call them "ambiguous reality isekai." Coraline, IT, Mister Magic, Little Nemo, Jim Henson's Labrynth, and most adaptations of the Nutcracker suit fall into this type of story.
@@finsterhund yeah Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland are like the first isekai’s I would have put in other examples like the fact both villains have castles but that is a given for any bad guy in fiction and both protagonists made friends on there adventure but Andy made friends with one race of aliens if he made friends with more aliens races in HoD like mole creatures and mermaids or something then he will have his own Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion then the references would be complete but besides that the game ends ambiguous do you think the events of the game are real or just Andy’s imagination?
@@brockbooth630 oh I'm team "not a dream" all the way! We in the real world can see Andy's adventure as a representation of overcoming fear and mental health problems but I also do like that it literally happened in-universe of the game itself. Especially because I like to think about what that would make the Master of Darkness and the larger implications of an entity like that existing
I think that's more interesting to develop as an idea in further content. I just think that there is little to suggest it in game, however I think it's not impossible and fun to speculate on the implcations if it's not a dream.
