Fantasy Flight Games have remade the classic (but out of print) social deduction board game Battlestar Galactica as Unfathomable! Instead of cylons, it's lovecraft's Dagon and his Deep Ones, and all the cards and pieces have been rebranded to fit into the Arkham files world. Unfathomable promises streamlined gameplay all in one cardboard box by incorporating multiple elements from all of Battlestar Galactica's expansions. There's also numerous improvements to update BSG to today's standards. We're talking cleaner rules and rulebook, more mechanics and abilities, as well as awesome new components like the miniatures. Unfathomable is significantly less fiddly, board state and positioning is actually a thing now, and the game even works better at 4 or 6 players instead of just BSG's 5 players! However, like any long social deduction game, the random nature of them tends to offset the balance to be really swingy, even more so now that you're free to combo as much as you want with your two actions...

As an aside: Fate of the Elder Gods is a title where you play as different cults, trying to summon your specific Eldritch horror before your rival cults can summon theirs -- asymmetric cult powers, casting spells (laying traps), avoiding the police/investigators, etc. A really high production and a great game if your group likes turning the screw on each other.

Oh hey, someone else that owns FotEG. I am very glad I picked up a copy a while ago, I recently finally got to play it, albeit solo. It's a really elegant design I think. I really enjoy how the spell cards in the game are so multi-purpose. Playing the solo was extremely interesting because unlike most solos I've tried there weren't a ton of custom game elements or rules. I could tell from the solo that if I get the chance to play FotEG with other people it will be a ton of fun :-)

A small, subtle thing I like in these reviews are the short clips of everyone playing, especially showing the vibe of the group or when people are on their phones (it shows that maybe other players turns aren't engaging or they take too long). Clips of actual gameplay helps me feel like the reviewer actually has played the game versus some other reviewers come off like they've just read the rulebook and pumped out a review.

Thanks for another great review! I always appreciate seeing what you think about the tactile and texture of the components, like the card stock. As the leading experts on social deduction games, would love to have your thoughts on Evil Dead 2, The Board Game. Haven't played yet but it appears to have a different take on traitor mechanics, and at least address a lot of the issues you have brought up in other games, such as a reasonable 60 minute playtime instead of 3-4 hours

My group is a huge fan of most party deduction games, and have also enjoyed things like dead of winter. 10/10, you've earned my sub! (With bell on 😁) Question, where did you get the sleeves for your cards?
@Shelfside

awesome! Yeah if you guys like DoW, Unfathomable probably works great. For the sleeves, we kind of got them from all over the place. The small cards are old FFG ones. The big ones for the player aids/characters are from sleeveking. The regular sized ones are from Asmodee. Best of luck with the sleeve hunting! -Ashton

It's great to hear a review of this from a BSG-lover. I love BSG, as well -- and the game fits the theme PERFECTLY, so I watched this hopeful to hear a definitive "if you love BSG the board game, but this now!"... but it feels like it's still "if you have and love BSG, you won't get much else that you don't already have" (It basically comes down to "do slightly improved mechanics validate the loss of theme?" because the CoC theme does nothing for me here (despite loving Arkham Horror, Eldritch Horror, and Mansions of Madness))
@Shelfside
@Shelfside Год назад
Yeah while this shares a lot of the same core mechanics of BSG and leads to a lot of similar feeling moments, the epicness is a little different, and the trackers/characters are TOTALLY different. Best to hang onto BSG if you get a lot of play out of it :) -Ashton

I am a latecomer, but enjoyed your show very much. It was very useful and absolutely reflected my own dilemmas about long social deduction games. I want to love them, but I love their concept more than their actual gameplay. My only 1 Unfathomable party was pretty good, I kept thinking of that it was way long. The moving parts are maybe a bit superfluous for a social deduction game, working on the crises are the main focus of the game. So Dark Moon (aka BSG express) is on my radar, however it has a very strange dice rolling mechanism which is almost a flaw. Have you guys tried it? I also really recommend for you Mantis Falls, the only hidden traiter game for 2 players. It is the best in the genre imo, it would be great to see your review on it. Sorry for the verbal diarrhea.

Thanks for the detailed review! Never played BSG but for someone who already has DoW and DoW Long Night (the latter which still hasn't been played yet but certainly enjoyed the former :P), is this worth getting?? It seems to play longer than DoW.
@Shelfside
@Shelfside 2 года назад
Daniel played this game once after we made this review, and he said that it definitely was leaning towards below that 2.5 hr mark! So still longer than DoW, but more accessible the more you play. The more rigid roles in stuff like BSG and Unfathomable means that you're probably gonna get more consistent playthroughs, whereas everyone's roles in DoW lead to sillier stories, especially when the exile comes into play. Definitely not as silly as the long night, man that one made for some really silly stories with the pills. Unfathomable is certainly worth getting if your group is down with the lying! -Ashton

My group absolutely loved BSG kind of social deduction, but as we became 4 player group instead of 5, that got shelved. There is nostalgia for sure, and improved 4p game would sell this to me despite now overdone theme, which I like, but here feels tired. But... There was a KS earlier this year, Human Punishment: The Beggining, which went for BSG heaviness, but both improved parts I have found weak in BSG (much more than just 4p), has fresher theme and gameplay ideas, and just feels like 2.0, not a remaster with new paintjob like this is (well, more like 1.4). Nevertheless, I am glad this kind of game is in stores now at least and may push the demand for such games higher.
@Shelfside

Is it possible to add in some of the Unfathomable improvements into Battlestar?
@Shelfside
@Shelfside 2 года назад
hmm, it would be some insane houseruling- a key thing of unfathomable is revealed traitors being on the ship, but implementing that in BSG would be pretty rough. You'd have to tweak centurions hard, probably take out super crises, and then give them attacking mechanics on the ship. You could experiment with having 2 actions per player (one of which could be a move), but then that would make XO wayy less important. I'm sure there's a possibility somewhere here -Ashton
