No tricks, no gimmicks, no surprises - they tell you right up front that the skit is going to be about an unfrozen caveman lawyer, and that's what they give you. After that, it relies entirely on the skit and the acting. And the fact that it's still hilarious is a credit to the excellent writing and the incredible star that Phil Hartman was. This skit is classic and still cracks me up.

There is a twist in this sketch though. You go into it expecting the common tropes - a grunting brute speaking broken English - but instead you get a man who is not only able to function in society and speak like a normal person but to also exploit the misconception about his people to advance his career. "Even a primitive caveman like me knows that my client is entitled to no less than $4,000,000 in damages."

RIP Phil hartman. A true pioneer and advocate for the cavern dweller and cro magnon-american communities, at a time when it was rare to see unfrozen cavemen and cavewomen in Hollywood playing anything but stereotypical hunters, or the occasional gatherer he truly showed that what geological era you come from doesn't have to define you, and that our hominid ancestors are much more than the monolyth from 2001, a space odyssey.

The brilliant reason why this sketch works so well - is because the way they wrote the caveman, he is actually SMARTER than people today. The point is: we've actually become dumber as a society over the 100,000 years, rather than advanced (as we all believe), and thats why its so easy for a caveman to advance and successfully become a lawyer, argue and win his case without a challenge, raise a family (in what appears to be no time at all) and still make it to run for Senate under the guise of cutting taxes lol (which everyone wants and is a common augment - btw, the fact that its for capital gains, which is just to benefit rich people like him, is even more perfect). Excellently performed by Phil Hartman, and just reams so much of how Lionel Hutz was written on The Simpsons

That’s why he was in more sketches than anyone else in the cast then. It’s very competitive at SNL for who gets to be in a sketch. Phil was the only one who would complain about being in too many sketches. On average they do about 8 a sketch per show, Phil was usually in about 6 of them
