I just flipped my stem and removed a spacer. I never considered it on my hybrid until now. I'm always leaning forward and putting pressure on my shoulders. The flip put me in the position I like both for my shoulders and sit bones after a small saddle tweak.

Yep. I had a narrow little soft-ish rubber/plastic stock saddle (Bontrager). I had butt pains after riding all the time. I got a Brooks B67 Brown leather saddle and it's much better already, ZERO pains after the season-starting ride after a long winter-break from cycling, bike riding. So yeah, that's a GO from me. I will have this high quality leather Brooks saddle on my bike(S) for years to come and I use Proofide on it. It's a beautiful saddle and so comfy. Wide enough for my big ass, buttox. I'm a big heavy man! Big rider. The B17 is narrower and maybe too narrow for me, not sure, never tried it. But B67 is a GO!

I get people are different and their requirements are different, what works for one may not work for another. Recently I went in for a bike fit and he immediately saw that I was on the wrong saddle because I was not stable, my hips were rocking and it contributed to an unstable upper torso, it all contributed to a lousy fit, numb hands, badly peddling, and loss of power. He switched saddles, my hips stopped rocking, my torso was stable, and my pedaling improved dramatically, especially after getting my saddle height dialed in and my saddle fore and aft. My problem was also I had one leg shorter than the other by 1/2". Fixing my saddle fixed my reach as well. Next day on my bike ride was an entirely different experience, I had power and efficiency, hills that I normally got off my saddle to pump I stayed on the saddle and spun all the way up with no issue because I had power. My hand numbness also disappeared. Amazing.

Excellent video. I solved my problem. I had a really nice selle italia on my old bike but it was uncomfortable. I thought that it was too curbed. I switched it out for something 1/5th the price, but flatter and more padded and it was a bit better. I bought a flat PRO saddle after that was flat but had little padding. It was the best. I bought a new bike with a better fit and with a relatively flat, but somewhat padded saddle. After two weeks of pain I switched the saddle for the old PRO saddle and never looked back. Even the fizik Arione is too curved for me. Go figure.

I would be very surprised if the Prologo Zero did not solve his problem. I solved the same problem for myself. I loved the length and racing profile of the Arione. It’s a great saddle. But, the Prologo has similar length and racing profile characteristics. Where, both saddles are flat lengthwise, across the Zero is a truly flatter platform. No sloping and plenty of flat area for the sit bones to find a home. The Prologo Zero solved the same problem for me and it’s on both my bikes. Fantastic saddles! I’m 55, 6,1” 230lbs and above average flexibility. By the way the CPC technology on the Prologo saddles is amazing! Adds plenty of comfort and you can say good bye to sliding. Especially, when hammering hard. Your rear end stays planted. I highly recommend it.

If I’m having issues with all my contact points on my mountain bike do I need a professional bike fit? Ive never seen that for mtb, but I’ve tried moving the bars, switching pedals, switching the saddle, switching the grips.. I’ve had the guys at the shop watch and try to help.. if anything it’s now worse because now I also have knee pain.

chendy20 I know it's no easy decision, because a quality bike fit is not cheap. It sounds like you might be at the point of needing more help though. I have a free "how to do a DIY video bike fit" series of articles on my website....have you tried any of that. Many times readers/viewers/subscribers have found one glaring issue; corrected it and then this allowed them to make more good decisions because they had started down the right path

Bike Fit Adviser thanks for the reply! I’ve watched a lot of videos, yours included, but I’ll look at your site too. My shop recommended a fit expert, but $350 for a mtb fit seems pretty excessive to me. I get for a road bike, but for a mountain bike it doesn’t seem like it shouldn’t be this difficult. But then again I don’t want to try a cheaper option and still be uncomfortable. This has been much more frustrating than I had ever anticipated.
@swissarmychainsawadams9541
@swissarmychainsawadams9541 5 лет назад
chendy20 - have you considered a different bike? Try something more "out of the box" comfortable, slacker head angle, and more upright. Test ride all the bikes you can at a large shop and you will get an idea of what fits you better. Remember that lots of bikes are based on "racing" bikes (think drop bars) and are not designed for comfort. I had a nice MTB that I just hated, and so I never road it. I finally sold, it and went shopping. Low and behold a more "downhill" type bike fit me, and I'm riding the snot out of it. Go on reddit or mtbr forums and ask for bike recommendations for folks with comfort issues. Salsa Fargo is a great one to try, where you go "oh, this is nice!"

I would like to know if you solved this clients issue. It's exactly the same situation I find myself in. Tall rider, 82 kg, reasonably flexible in a moderately aggressive riding position. Tried 10 different saddles so far and haven't found one that takes the pressure off of my perineum. Numbness sets in at about half an hour of riding time. Currently using a Fabric Shallow which is the most comfortable so far, but not the solution. Thoughts?

@yantai9141
@yantai9141 6 лет назад
Not necessarily. My saddle is also right on the ends of the rails. According to my fitter I have large femur bones so my reach is fine on the frame however I need a bigger setback on the seat relative to pedals. If I go one size up in frame and top tube I won't be comfortable on the reach. I had to get a shorter stem on existing frame size!
@Mike-oz4cv
@Mike-oz4cv 6 лет назад
I’m not sure but in the video it looks like the seat post is not angled back very far (i.e. the frame has a steep seat tube angle). I think the saddle position just compensates for that.

@Methodical2
@Methodical2 4 года назад
That super wide and cushy seat may be even worse, as mentioned, try before you buy. Measure your sit bone and that would provide valuable information for finding a better fitting saddle. Once you know your sit bone width find a seat that will accommodate them. The manufacturer usually provide the width of the seat in the specs.

My body is hour glassed shape. I have a very large butt. Even through my female bike seat is wide, it still gives me a wedgy when I get on my bike. I've spent a whole day adjusting the height of my handlebars, and the angle of my handle bars. I have the saddle at its lowest position. Because my Dutch bike is a bit big for me. Even through when sitting on my bike, I can barely touch the ground. I can still ride the bike without my butt shifting side to side on the saddle. Does height of my bike make a difference in saddle size?
@hotsky83
@hotsky83 5 лет назад
I would think not the height but the handlebar reach and how forward you lean when you're on the bike.
@MsDaem0n
@MsDaem0n 5 лет назад
if you're rocking sideways on your saddle the length between saddle and pedals is too large. This is not good at all and has nothing to do with the saddle... Your only option is to get a smaller bike. Check the frame size. Even in the Netherlands bikes come in many sizes! Groetjes

Why hasnt some smartass, (pun intended), invented a neutral seat rigged with pressure sensors that measures pressure points, sit bone distance and pressure build up points during movement. Surely it can't be that hard to take what the manufacturer used to measure all those parameters, craft a user friendly, customer version, then put them in bike dealerships with training for sales staff so they know which configuration works best for their customers, more accurately.

@tonyyates2012

@@SekretZdzicha.Fuck that!, I'm thinking an IPad app that lets you sit on the screen measures your sit bone measurements, calculates your perfect seat, automatically emails the measurements, then the company posts back a seat. Whadda ya think bud?
@SekretZdzicha
@SekretZdzicha 5 лет назад
There are already many bike shops offering the same, albeit you have to go to the shop. An app that calculate touch pressure for ipad might do, but you would only aqquire customers that have ipad, or other big tablet thats size of the butt. Still i think most people prefer to visit a bike shop to get measurements, theres also customer service, and you can already get a feeling of the saddle. What if the saddle dont fit? You would have to send it back and then redo it, howd you would get the customer feedback? I think that idea needs lot of refinement.
@tonyyates2012
@tonyyates2012 5 лет назад
Samsung, Lenovo, Acer and Huawei also have tablets big enough, I just used Apple as an example, customer base suddenly got a lot bigger bro. Most independent shops have no custom fitting outside of best guess advice and personal opinions. Using all the sensors on a tablet "could" potentially give you a very accurate reading if the algorithm allowed for multiaxis motion, stick your tablet on a small cushion, rotate back and forth, side to side, let the sensors work it out. Fingerprint sensors are doing the same shit on a smaller scale. Why buy a generic guess, Saville row that ass.

@danfuerthgillis4483
@danfuerthgillis4483 4 года назад
This is a great video but it misses 2 critical parts of the saddle fit. 1. If your testicles are bigger and hang down you need a wider front area of the saddle so you don't squish them into a smaller section also you can't use an open channel as they may slip into the channel and cause pain. 2 The size of your butt cheeks also is a huge factor for the back part of the saddle as wider butt cheeks you need a wider flat top so they don't push your sit bones away from the center. Lastly front and back position of saddle can make or break a good working saddle.

Sorry man, I really wanted to see this content, but you just went on and on about too many other (completely valid and helpful) points. Maybe this is just me, but as a content creator myself, I know that giving people the specific info they are looking for (usually what's in the title) quickly is really important to viewers and sharing. I hope this helps because you do have some good info that people (and I ) need.

I guess you are one of these people that has a problem with constructive criticism? It's how things, all things, are made better. It was a problem with the title, not the content. I was looking for a specific piece of info, maybe he delivered but it was buried in so much other info that I couldn't find it. So I DID go to someone elses video that presented the info I was looking for without other info. Titles are important because they help people find what they are looking for. Don't you agree? Helping others do what they want to better (via constructive criticism) is important too. Don't you agree?

Scott everyone who publish videos on youtube obviously wants feedback (if the comment function was not disabled) and if not all people are happy with the content you offer, he/you (not you, Scott, you are not his sokesman) have to deal with it. Smart people , are able to learn from constructive criticism. But as texxs01 already said, some people does not understand the sense of constructive criticism in general - a medal always got two sides and you can learn something from each side. @brucewmclaughlin9072
@brucewmclaughlin9072 6 лет назад
Depends on which recumbent you test drove some are none, semi or full suspension . I have no problems with seeing or being seen in city traffic, however there are recumbent's out there that are so low you can read the print on the tire sidewalls of parked cars. When I bought my Bacchetta A 20 touring recumbent in 2016 , I changed the seat within 100 miles and changed the crank arm length from 170 mm to 153 mm and it is far more comfortable and I have less strain on my knees. Just like a normal bike if you ain't comfortable change the part.
@johnpossum556
@johnpossum556 6 лет назад
I had a birds eye view from a transit center as one wiped out just below me. No, thanks. They're brutally impossible to recover from. On a normal bike you just drop a foot down. The ones I did like were the british models & cat trikes with suspension but I don't recall testing a full suspension model. I ride several regular full suspension bikes now with my own customizations. Even the people I've talked to wish they had more suspension available. My spine could not take that and its why I shared the link for the seat I chose: It has three advantages over most seats: First, it cups your butt rather than push against it with senseless bulges. Secondly, it has a steel spring system hidden underneathe the elastomers. Third, the elastomers.... the combo between the form fit, the foam, the steel, the elastomer all works towards a very smooth ride. Combine that with a FS bike and you've got a real comfortable machine.
@brucewmclaughlin9072
@brucewmclaughlin9072 6 лет назад
I rode normal bikes for 32 years and now recumbents for the last 11 years and any accidents I have had have been falling to the side, not brutal, and not a head plant, as a normal bike will give you if you lock up the front wheel unexpectedly. I too can drop my foot down but like my upright bike it makes little difference if your cleat hits the pavement first. But to be fair my recumbent is a touring model so I do not jump curbs , ride over roots, take jumps off rock faces and suspension would just add weight not functionality. I am amazed at the tech that goes into bikes now and the prices seem to be dropping as well.
@johnpossum556
@johnpossum556 6 лет назад
Well I saw the recumbant bike driver try to avoid some one else on the path and he started fishtailing. Putting his foot down only made it worse. He was not doing anything risky at all. He still ended up with large portions of road rash due to the other person not being as safe or smart as they could be. You have to be prepared for idiots out there. I've seen a beaut of a headplant, too. Drove his teeth right through his lip. Totally concussed. All because his buddy went into his lane when an SUV faked a turn into his own driveway. Sh1t happens but these two spandex boys had more gear than sense.
