"Can plants have cancer?" Yes, they can. But since almost all plants have have dozens, hundreds, or thousands of copies of each "organ" (like leaves, roots, flowers, vessels for transporting water and nutrients) and because the cancer can't really spread through old wood, the cancer normally doesn't cause the plant much trouble. It can lead to ugly growths on the trunk or deformed branches, but the plant as a whole usually remains healthy with no threatening side effects. - Trained gardener and horticulture student

The Dutch have the same word for canker and cancer... Botanically speaking, what's the difference between the two?
@Yora21
@Yora21 5 лет назад
I just did some checking and the condition that is commonly called fruit tree cancer is actually an infection that destroys the tissue in a stem, which then grows over as a scar. This is much more similar to bone infections in animals and doesn't have much to do with animal cancer. That's what cankers seem to be. (Not familiar with English botanical terms.) Though I think that it's very likely that plants can have damaged DNA that can cause cells to grow out of control too. However, I can find almost no information about that. Given how plants grow, I suspect that such tumors would remain very small because they don't have any space to grow into, so they don't become an issue. Bacteria and fungus infections can literally eat holes into wood, causing the tree to grow bigger and bigger scars.

I think you'd have to use the defibrillator on the horse part, because a centaur would need a horse heart to pump all the blood around
@MrPaukann
@MrPaukann 5 лет назад
But the digestive system is, probably, in the horse part (I haven't seen a depiction of a centaur with an anus between the front legs), so it frees up a lot of space in the human part.
@fribblip
@fribblip 5 лет назад
@@MrPaukann That's certainly true, however, since the human part still breathes, I think the chest will be mostly filled with the lungs, which also need to be larger to accommodate the horse body. This leaves little to no room for a larger heart, even taking into account the digestive system being moved. Though this more extreme distance between the heart and lungs could introduce all sorts of problems in itself
@MrPaukann
@MrPaukann 5 лет назад
@@fribblip, yeah, I'm not a biologist at all, but isn't a heart almost always very close to lungs? So the heart would be where the lungs are. I think the fact that a centaur has two separate rib cages makes it impossible to define its internal organs' layout. In reality it would probably have a much more slender human part with practically no major organs in it and no rib cage. Much like a giraffe, although it's neck is a significant proportion of its total volume, it doesn't have any major organs inside.
@fribblip
@fribblip 5 лет назад
@@MrPaukann Probably yeah. Though that makes the transport of air from the throat to the lungs difficult. Maybe two separate hearts? Like really big lungs because the digestive system has moved to the horse part and then two hearts two pump all the blood around.

As a vet I am also intrigued as to how you would defibrillate a Centaur! Maybe a Centaur has two hearts and you would need to use two units in tandem? Domestic animals don't usually experience ventricular fibrillation or other shockable rhythms so maybe it is a trick question?
@MrPaukann
@MrPaukann 5 лет назад
Would the two hearts stop simultaniously? I found one article describing a case of conjoined twins with two hearts, where only one heart had stopped, the defibrillation of one of the hearts didn't effect the second one. So, in the case of two-hearted centaur, the answer is "the one that had stopped".

@@MrPaukann Most horses are too busy being lame or getting colic to worry about heart conditions as well! @@SyntheticSeries Yeah if they have a specific mutation in gene CCR5 which codes for the co-transporter of CD4 carrying white blood cells which are used by some strains of HIV to get into those cells. You can still get HIV if you are so unfortunate that you get a different strain of HIV that doesn't use that cotransporter to get in.

congrats on the 100,000 mark - you deserve every sub - and so much more. OMG I can't believe how talented you are - and how you find the time to do everything in your life - your professional life, challenging as it is - this amazing channel with awesome content - medically insightful & accurate (usually) ("please do not expect any useful information in this video") love the deadpan humour in all your content - *always* clever and funny - (and on top of that - having a personal life - being a dad) -

Just wanted to say that you're a real life hero and I'm looking forward to the many more videos to come!
