this is a work-in-progress QOL for under night in-birth 2: sys:celes which adds improved 1440p support and subtitles on intro/win/lose/IW/IWEX.
it also includes (or will include)
- unused UNI2 stage "Altar of Light and Dark"
- extra BGM (all openings, UNICLR versions of songs, some remixes and some melty/abk tracks)
- extra announcers from beta UNI
- the return of "with character" plates (replacing the cut-in plates)
no release date yet.

predicted questions that i might get:
Q: I thought UNI2 already supports 1440p?
A: Actually, all of the resolution options in UNI2 do absolutely nothing except change window size when in windowed mode. Regardless of which resolution option you choose, the game will always have an internal render resolution of 720p, resulting in very blurry graphics.
DGVoodoo can be used to actually increase internal resolution, but this creates an issue as all of the assets in the game only have textures designed for 720p. This mod does more than that, by recreating many of the UI and HUD to have proper 1440p resolution.
Q: Why is this taking so long?
A: The game only expects 720p resolution assets, so many textures in the game are actually hardcoded to only take from what it expects from a 720p texture. So if you change a texture from 256x256px to 512x512px, it only reads from the first 256x256px of the texture, resulting in extremely glitchy looking UI.
The only workaround to many of these is to RECREATE EVERY ELEMENT OF THE HUD using the in-game object system. So things like the GRD bar, character UI portraits, etc. Are actually the same type of object as Hyde's Orbiter! As you may expect, recreating the behaviors of UI is tricky.
Q: Why are the fonts still pixelated?
A: The French Bread engine is cursed. Fonts and many other textures (such as the text on the main menu) cannot be upscaled.
Q: Why are there two Akatsukis?
A: Leftover from my EN-Eins mod. Will not be a part of Vanilla+
Q: Will this be netplay compatible? Could this mod get me banned?
A: Yes! There'd be no point to this mod if it wasn't. Also French Bread isn't a rich enough studio to afford moderation, and this mod is designed to be undetectable. Players without the mod can still play with players that have Vanilla+ as well.

OG voice lines would be cool. Otherwise my favourite thing about the mod is subtitles. Now i get what they’re saying lol, so yeah great job man

Any chance built in borderless windowed mode could happen? I know about (and have been using) third party software, but it's annoying.

Can we have a version that solely keeps the two akatsukis for absolutely no reason, or is the french bread engine so absolutely cursed that this becomes absolure hell Either way I'm glad to see people digging their hands into the spaghetti this game's code was, I KNEW the game was blurry despite whatever I set it too and thank god I wasn't insane

mhm, back in clr the resolution options drove me insane, so I had to fix that in uni2. also if you want two akatsukis editing the character select isn't that hard and the final release will include some files which you could use to edit in two akatsukis again

i figured out how to run the game at 1440p myself but noticed that all the hud assets were pixelated so i'm looking forward to this mod for fixing that alone. thank you for your work, i'll try it as soon as it's available.

Really glad you’re making this mod I really hoped for subtitles and all of the OPs to be in this game though we didn’t get that unfortunately.. Really looking forward to a release date.. Keep up the great work!

Will the opponent hear the "auto" BGM if the mod user uses extra BGM? (in case of when they didn't enable the "local stage/bgm" option)

iirc they will hear either nothing (as in MBTL, more likely) or random (as in UNICLR). though some of the extra bgm will be pulling from tracks in game files (e.g. the opening songs) so in those cases both players will hear the same music

tbh I'm kinda hoping at some point there's a UI overhaul too because I dislike the current one compared to pre UNI2's. I liked the previous fonts and menu screens.

sprite arcade story scenes are pretty low-priority at the moment; it'll take much longer to check and there may not be engine support for it - but if i can add them there will be another preview

Just curious but would this cause a issue for 1080p users when attempting to downscale from 1440p?

normally yes, but I've tried to enable bilinear filtering on assets where possible, so 1080p downscaling should be OK.

cant really give an eta unfortunately, im doing a lot of other things atm and this is one of many side projects. this mod is still in its early stages of dev, as only a few screens have been remade and theres only a handful of in-game subtitles atm. itll be a while at the very least.

How many Melty Tracks do you intend to add, and for mod-specific stuff, how would it work for me to play with someone without the mod, when I have a modded stage/track enabled?

depends on how much I feel like modding, probably around 10 tracks. with exceptions, people without vanilla+ will hear silence if you play a modded music track so those songs are disabled on random. However that doesn't apply to the hilda stage because its still in the gamefiles. I've tested it online and everyone can play on it perfectly regardless if you mod or not
