Oh! I forgot to mention, it seems the "Walled City" type forts (the cities with Taverns in them) have a full list of unit options as opposed to the the standard fort's 3.
LOL I JUST noticed that and glanced up to see your comment on the PC over my wifes shoulder. Coincidences are weird sometimes. But your absolutely right. The BIG cities have a slew of choices for recruits AND you can make any city a big city if you do enough "deliveries", so I bet there are a TON of "hidden" choices you can unlock by building certain ones, because they all seem to have different but set choices, including some really cool variants. I was wrong about this game being as amazing as Ogre battle. WAY wrong. After spending last night exploring its mechanics and nuaces, I believe this game blows ogre battle out of the water! A game which until now was my all time favorite game.
At 4:23 I'm not sure if you're solely talking about just the little forts, but the "fortress" areas like the Walled City of Barbatimo (Hammer guy's town) allows you to enlist 6 different classes at once. So I'm sure there will probably be other town areas that allow you to enlist more than just the 3, like the little forts do.
The names are names of NPCs throughout the game. I had my big shield guy Arnot. Fought around 4 other Arnots in the game, from the Coliseum to the random stage on the map.
You can hover over forts in the world map and ‘Facility Info’ will show you what mercs you can recruit from them. Just a tip for when the map gets bigger
The first thing I wanted to do was name units after myself and friends. It's a huge bummer if we never have the chance to use our own custom names for units
Maybe after the game releases there might be an chance that an update can appear so that you can give Mercenaries you hire an Custom name that you can type in aslong its not inappropriate or sensetive to the game. It probably won't happen but its atleast an possibility that maybe can happen
I have a solution for the naming problem for now, we could take the in-game name as our own and role-playing it, like if we have an alternatives name in Fevrith, for example: Instead of calling my unit Tan the Hoplite, I take Thibault as the alternatives
Man this really looks great. Been hoping for a new Ogre Battle type game for YEARS. TBH I figured somewhere a developer would get the idea to either remake the classic, or recraft another hidden gem of the past in this vein like "Dark Wizard" (which is an incredible army-management turn based game itself). Really thought either would be a thing before we saw a new IP, but this is looking nice. Hope it starts a trend of these types of games.
It's definitely an odd one, but I'm personally holding out vague hope/cope that this is just a demo limitation. They didn't have this in Grand Knights.
Huh! That's odd about the naming. Custom character naming is a super-popular feature; people were asking me to put it in Together in Battle for *years* until I finally caved and added it. I'm surprised Vanillaware wouldn't include that. I do really like the fact that they made different locations offer different recruits; anything that differentiates locations helps to make a game world feel more real (and to make exploration feel more consequential).
Honestly it's probably to do with concerns over inappropriate names. There are too many words that are innocent in some languages and very rude in others
Was it a difficult feature to implement? Is it likely Vanillaware would add it in a future update? Honestly feels like the sort of thing Atlus would add in the definitive version they release 2-3 years from now lol
@@degreeskelvin3025 For me? Not at all. It took me less than a day. (When you account for designing and coding a virtual keyboard from scratch so it can be done with a gamepad: three days.)
I think it sucks majorly that we can't name them ourselves, HOWEVER... I highly respect aesthetic/lore consistency, maybe so more than others, and have a level of appreciation for the name list. Besides, outside of your (very generous and graciously handled) Patreon campaign, we know most people would be naming their units stuff like "Penis Breath" and "Butthole Jr."
@@KnightRaymund Never ever said no one shouldn't be allowed to, never even implied it. Only said that I think there is at least something honorable in a game dev wanting to codify the integrity of their art, even if I ultimately disagree.
Another minor issue on top of no custom name is I would prefer the weapon appearance change when you equip a different one. Skin color change would be a bonus. Still enjoyed the demo and will get it on release.
Would DRASTICALLY expand the amount of work the animation team would need to do. There's like 40 classes + unique animations depending on the sex of the character. Just animating 10 different weapons for all of that would be insane. There's a reason why most 2d games in the genre historically don't do this. The only game studio I know that does this is the people behind triangle strategy. With 3d is a lot easier. You can see that FE did not have custom weapons until 3d. The fact that they even made different animations for some attacks, like the thief's toxic throw, is extremely commendable
@@degreeskelvin3025 Disgaea games come to mind regarding different weapon skins and that game had lots of classes and animations too. Not a major issue but would have been nice. Another Vanillaware game, Dragons Crown did it as well.
I hate Nintendo name censorship. But even with all the ridiculous restrictions you can still freely name characters in most games. Even Pokemon, a game aimed at kids.
They could add a setting where you can add custom names but if you do turn it on for a save file, you can't do online stuff. OR that the names appear generic online but are custom in your own game.
It's not more interesting, but I mainly care about using generics to begin with. FFTA on GBA was similar in that you couldn't name them, but I was fine since I could still use them.
Also, as a French native, I'd like to point out that OMG THAT LIST OF NAMES .... like, some of them are so so so so weird in the context of this game. VERY old, archaic names, most current and freshly deceased old people would have. I legit paused the game for a sec to assess what language I was playing the game in because I was confused. My mother, sister and grandmother’s names are on that list haha On the plus side, first time I see my first name in a video game ... that I don't even play in French ahah WILD STUFF
Actually... it is. But not the English alphabet. If you convert the names into Japanese, the list actually is in Japanese alphabetical order. Took me a second to realize myself.
am i the only one who deosn't seee an issue with this wdit: i hope this doesn't effect the sales but i don't know from what i saw in the comments people are truly stupid you choose not to buy this wonderfull game over this minute detail sight
Idk about that. I'm not sure refunds should be mentioned unless he can guarantee it. It would be better if he just did it without announcing, so that people don't start unsubbing en mass and trying to refund the month or whatever.
A lot of people seem really bothered by the name thing but I really couldn't care less. Sucks that it's impacting people's enjoyment of the game though.
A little disappointed by that. I was also hoping Alain was renamable like Magnus from Ogre Battle as well. Oh well, they already voiced his name, I guess. Still a fantastic demo and very excited for launch.
As far as I can tell, no but with a few caveats. The story characters have their growths set in stone BUT a mirror item has been found in the demo that lets you recustomize the unique characters (including their colors and growths, even Alain). The other caveat is that some story characters have unique items that only they can equip.
Yeah I didn't like that tbh... I was like.. bruh... for all this complicated gambit stuff and character customization... the one simple thing... inputting your own alphabetic characters... are overlooked... so strange.
Well, if i learned anything from the Jimmy Neutron episode with the "perfect candy", it is that nothing should be perfect or people develop addictions.^^ So i think this minor nitpick is bearable.^^
I am personally fine with the character creation for the generic characters. The naming thing is tedious, but I agree it is probably a way to keep it lore friendly with naming conventions and world lore. Also, I personally love the closed face helms, so I go there and hire lots of knightly type units. Edit: I do this because I play tabletop wargames like Warhammer and always use knights, paladins, clerics, or other holy type units... The crusade marches on lol
Can you change the armor appearance of named characters? It would be nice to be able to have a uniformed army rather than a rag tag band of different colors.
I hear that you can. There's a special item you can buy at a secret shop that allows you to change the color scheme and growth rates of any character, including uniques. I haven't found it yet myself, so I don't know all the specifics, but it does exist.
@@TitaniumLegman That's a huge relief, I'll consider buying the game in that case. I'm still kinda miffed about the really simplistic story though. Definetly not giving me Ogre Battle vibes.
Yeah not being able to name generic recruits really change my mind about this being a day one purchase. I know that's something that seems rather minor to be turned off by but I was really looking forward to asking my friends what units they would want to be , their entire color schemes and growth rates and stuff, and now I'm denied that. That was literally the important thing in the game to me.
I was shocked & annoyed at first but that's exactly how Dragon's Crown did it. It's the same exact customization system. It made more sense with that game since it's a multiplayer beat em up in similar vein to the Capcom Dungeons & Dragons games. I do ponder if any Dragon Crown characters make it in as cameos but DC was a Robert E. Howard style dark fantasy.
Dragon's Crown isn't dark fantasy or Howard influenced at all (look at how prevalent and commonplace Magic is, for one) It's very much just the classic Japanese take on Western high fantasy that started with things like Wizardry.
If I have a unit with two active skills but only one active point can I put conditions on them were I can maybe use one over the other without changing them in the slots the my are in?😊
In the context of the demo at least, and if you wanna save Scarlett by the end, Josef is absolutely a necessity. His action economy and stats just can’t be beat by the limited exp you get in ~7hrs
To be honest Im just disappointed for the missing permadeath I could imagine that if one of our characters said they're dying words with a dramatic music, truth to be told it would be fitting right to this game
Galerius deletes unit left and right, the way bosses are designed in this game is like final fantasy with loads of abilities and big damage. And you have to pile your entire army to take him down. Perma death just won't work in this game.
You can do a custom ironman playthrough for yourself as the maps don’t force character deployments except allies. But the game just isn’t balanced for it, and the story would require rewrites. I do think it’s possible at a higher skill level and look forward to ppl attempting their own challenge runs. Galerius is a beast but I beat him with only Josef being killed
Cornia seems to be based off of France, Albion seems to be based off of Britain, Drakenhold seems to be based off of Germany, and the Zenoiran Empire clearly invokes the Roman Empire. I’m interested to see what Elheim and Bastorias are inspired by.
I'm fine with no custom name, let's stop dictate our wishes if developers wanted the game like that. To me it gave more personality to the game. Plus if you recruit someone it's normal he already have a name, it's not like it's your baby 😮
Does patreon allow me to just make a donation and you’ll make me a character? I love your work and you’re the reason I have Unicorn OL preordered. I wanna help but hate subs
don't. it wasn't that complicated at all. the choices for custom character wasn't even that much. btw, stats growth is fixed, he don't even bother to go back and see his OWN playthrough of alain's stats growth.
You can just do a sub at the right tier, then cancel it immediately. Works the same as a one time donation, and I count it as supporting on Patreon, so it's a win win
Why do so many eastern devs make the EXACT SAME PROTAGONIST? No character creation really sucks. The game is super fun, but the stupid anime voices and HORRIFIC acting makes me play this game with the sound off. I can only take so much "baby voice" before I want to throw up.
The naming being limited IS a bummer, but you're such an enjoyable person to watch and so sweet that i dont mind. Keep my money you wonderful person and lets take back our world together 🫡
i didn't watch the ps5 play through, i was playing on the Xbox after watching you play on the switch. Did you ever liberate the city??? it gets 5 or 6, i 4get, recruits. @TitaniumLegman
