Josef: Hmm, Alain is maturing well but I think can wait till he's a full-fledged man to give him the ring. * Entire map turns purple Josef: *_OH FUCK OH SHIT, OH SHIT OH FUCK-_*
So, you might not realize, but the intro cutscene and tutorial mission on the island are almost EXACTLY a one-to-one recreation of the plot and first mission of the very first Fire Emblem game from all the way on the NES. The game very deliberately wears its influences in the open.
Interesting. In the west, the first Fire Emblem we got was Path of Radiance, and I don't know how nany people went back to play the prior games, so that is an easy thing to miss.
@@jeremiahstenzel789 The first FE in the west was actually the GBA FE which was originally called Blazing blade. Path of Radiance was the first that got major popularity though.
Man, the upcoming podcast conversation about this game is gonna be something else considering that this game is peak Vanillaware: - The development of the game caused the devs to almost bankrupt the studio. - It has been on development for a absurd amount of time. - There's a lot of fighting game references hidden in it (like how the witches are basically Morigan from Darkstalkers). And many other things that don't immediatly come to mind.
@@cyberninjazero5659 well, the female cleric (Scarlett) has tits so big that they are literaly almost bursting out of her clothes and her basic walk cycle has said tits bounce around with every step. So yeah, the jiggle physics is certainly still there.
"If you have three pages of art, you might be a main character" he says. Woolie then pages over to Hodrick "And if you don't, [chuckles] you might be a grunt." "You might not see the next chapter!" Suggests Reggie. Foreshadowing and dramatic irony are a narrative devices by which... (edited for clarity, grammar and spelling)
@@crawlingboy just look up the swordmaster moveset, they literaly have a move where they dash foward while leaving behind blue after-images that look really similar to the ones that Akuna does.
41:32 I know it's what he does, but I feel like Woolie keeps trying to understand how everything works on his own terms rather than just reading stuff verbatim and letting it set in. This level of misunderstanding is odd considering the skill says outright how it works and when it's activated.
He does this sort of stuff in all his rpg let’s plays, to the point I only ever click on them now to read the comments. The only exception I can name to this is the ttyd playthrough, where the chat told him how to use the badges
Fun fact! If you approach Bradley, Geithe, Hodel or Reimann in the opening stage, they'll have a unique conversation with a member of Ilenia's unit! Pretty cool detail.
It's too bad that 13 Sentinels isn't an anime. Then I could finish the story. There's no way that I can finish it when I've got UO sitting there, staring at me to try new unit comps and weapon combos. 😂
That is precisely what I'm doing, so thanks for that. 13 Sentinels and its mind-shattering story just lives rent-free in my head, even years after watching their playthrough.
well they are going for a game designed like Ogre Battle so God Willing it'll be a different kind of incredible, if not just better than the average srpg.
Only 40 more episodes until Woolie finds Amalia aka Marissa but bigger. This game is long and has infinite labbing potential for Woolie (and me) to get lost in.
Haven't beaten it yet, but just in terms of sheer ambition that has gotta be one of the best SRPGs of the decade. I'm so impressed with the sheer VOLUME of this game.
Woolie overthinking every little bit and misunderstanding mechanics when all he had to do was just trust the tutorial to teach the mechanics in the pace and order the devs intended
Ooh Shit! I just watched a clip for this game a few hours ago and then got sad because I don't have an xbox and thought "ahh well, I guess I'll never experience it" and then BOOM Woolie drops this out of the blue xD thanks Woolie your choice of games is always on point my man xD
These motherfuckers at Vanillaware... All I asked for was 13 Sentinels on PC, damn it! I didn't ask for a brand new game that will ALSO never be on PC!!!
I wonder how much Woolie will struggle with this game, 40 hours in I still get some tutorials and he usually wants to know everything before doing anything.
This is super minor, but the fact that they just flip the sprites so the unicorn on Ilenia's skirt is mirrored when she turns around seems like the kind of small detail Vanillaware don't usually overlook. It's like Guile's flag tattoo facing backwards.
@@crawlingboy There's a certain character you can get near the end of the game and she's an absolute fucking unit. If I had one complaint, she just comes at the end. Should earnestly be longer but she's what I imagine if Guts and Casca had a baby, but there's probably a better reference.
@@CreationsFlare Eh? I got her after I finished that region when average levels were 17-20. You just gotta puzzle things out, not win with sheer numbers.
"Champions of Kink" would probably be the NSFW game they would be force to release only on PC to make some money to fund their other projects in the future lmao.
@@NEEDbacon Never thought I'd hear that game referenced in the light of day in the year [CURRENT YEAR], but CoC with a shiny Vanillaware shell would be the game I would play forever.
Oh dang, didn't realize you were gonna be recording yourself playing this. I'm too broke to buy Unicorn Overlord right now but at least I can watch you go through the game
With regards to marketing, ive actually been hit with a lot of youtube ads for this!(after i already preorded fwiw) Hoping others are seeing it too bc this quarter is abaolutely packed with good gamea. Would hate for it to go under the radar.
It feels like Woolie just hates tutorials when he's trying to race the tutorial in getting the information before it's given for... no reason? So he can misunderstand things down the line? Like just relax and trust that the game devs put in a lot of time working on a tutorial to help you understand things bit by bit not flood yourself with everything to get confused later.
I don't think he hates them, I think he's just worried he won't understand later so he tries to get the jump on it. But yeah, it's unnecessary. Just play the game and you'll learn.
i didn't really care much for fire emblem three houses but this is giving me much more ff tactics psx medieval vibes (i played it on pc with a patch to add in the objectively better psp translation btw) :] looks cool
Every Fire Emblem game is very much its own beast, and in Three Houses case, that led to its gameplay being kinda ass. This game has a lot of FE influence in it, and can definitely stand toe to toe with the best that series has to offer, as far as I'm concerned.
I am _so_ disappointed this isn't available on PC where I can play it. Here's hoping a port happens fast enough I won't have already lost interest by the time it arrives.
Thanks for being a real one, good netizen. It's sad to think about directly, but props for being the only commenter here honest enough to say it like it is. In six months, everyone is going to have moved on, for better or for worse. Folks will mention this game not getting a PC port again during the Geoff Keely awards when it gets a nomination and no award wins, but never again thereafter. Every other PC-only in this comment section is literally up their own ass with self-importance trying to be passed off as righteous indignation with their port begging. Yet, a vast majority of them wouldn't actually buy Unicorn Overlord, much less anything Vanillaware, even if it was out on PC right now. All that I hear is "I totally would, trust me bro. The week-early leaked version is right over there and the streammonsters in the podcast chat are telling me it's almost amoral NOT to pirate it, but trust me bro - I'd totally buy it." I would love to be wrong. I'd love to see data that would prove that the glorious PC master-race would show up for nice port down the line. But I don't believe "I totally would, trust me bro." There is no hype for 'a game that has been out for six months somewhere else' unless that somewhere is literally the Epic Games Store (like Hades) - which is a WIDLY different scenario than the one at hand. (U.O. being on every current console, but not PC.) Yeah, I get it, Vanillaware could move some more digital stock (and make some money), and for the few edge-cases out there who actually can't play it on anything but a settop computer, they'd get a chance to play a really nice game. But those are probably a vocal minority of commenters and I'm tired of pretending otherwise.
Looks like a great game. Would love to play it on my PC or my Steamdeck but Vanillaware doesn't want my money. Just watch Wollie and Reggie playing it instead.
I have been curious about this game but it seems a bit daunting for somebody who has little to no experience with grand strategy games. I hope these videos will inform me a bit more.
That's where I was at, but the game does have a Story-Mode difficulty. There's also a setting that automatically paused the game at the start of the battle, so you can get your bearings and take a look at everything. It's very beginner-friendly!
@@angelicabasque1749 That is pretty cool, nice quality of life. I tend to play games on the normal difficulty, trusting the devs to not make it too tough for your regular player.
Boy, i sure would love to spend money and buy this game. But i dont own a console, ive just got this useless glowing box on my desk that i use to watch youtube videos
So I know someone who has been looking into the files. Bro they did some fucked up shit to make it, to where I now know why a actual low budget studio like Vanillaware would not want to make then port to PC.
I unironically laughed at the "The heavens will surely be on the side of justice" Like bruh. Your mother was at the apex of Cornia's ability to resist the formation of the empire. It reminds me of Viserys Targaryen to Danny. About how surely everyone will just join the cause and restore Cornia. One thing I want from this game is I want the story to be way more grounded and that Josef really did some serious political legwork to not only form the liberation army. But all occupied territories to openly rebel across the empire at the same time. So when the liberation army starts gaining forces. It makes sense they aren't just stomped out with end game bosses. Because everyone else everywhere is helping out and dividing their attention. Otherwise it just makes no sense.
For anyone who has spent a decent amount of time with this game, are the enemy encounters random? As in, is the unit composition static for the enemy, or is it randomly generated from a pool? My main concern is that if the unit composition is static, then the game can be "solved", leading to a stale metagame approach.
It's static. There's so many different abilities going off in battle though that the slightest change in rng (moves can crit or be evaded) can lead to massively different outcomes. You have to understand too that this isn't fire emblem where it's 1v1 where a unit just has an insurmountable advantage over another. This has formations, so while units are designed to hard counter other types, the other units in that formation might cover them. Besides which, "solving" how to fight enemies IS the fun of this game. It honestly feels more like a programming game than a strategy game. I guess you could just look up a guide, but if you did that you don't have a right to complain about lack of difficulty. Honestly, just try the demo, it's extremely generous and properly representative of the full game.
Although its static they do add several new classes in every kingdom. Youll probably "solve" the game by just getting overpowered and loading one or 2 parties with your best gear. But if you play around with everything and use more units you wont have that issue as much. What kind of strategy game is random anyways?
The early stuff in Cornia is easy. It has difficulty spikes assuming you don't go massively off the beaten path or abuse the exp boosting order. Definitely only play on the hardest difficulty though.
Exp boosting is pointless, this game has a lot of problems with just giving you TOO much. As a result of having plenty it fails to gatekeep you in a way that the difficulty is consistent.@@falimkirious2923
