Unifi Controller Migration - Backup & Restore

In this short video, I go over the main points on how to migrate a Unifi Controller using the Backup and restore method. This method is used when migrating an entire controller installation and is especially useful if the controller has many "sites". I personally don't use this method very often as most migrations I take care of are only a single site.
This is the first video in my new "In a Nutshell" series. Let me know what you think in the comments. I'm going to try to keep these videos as close to a minute as possible so a lot of more detailed information is left out when compared with my other, full-length, tutorials.

This is so helpful! I was really afraid of doing this since I'm new to Ubiquiti Unifi and might mess it up, but I just followed these easy and fast steps, and I got it! Finally, after a long search, I figured it out! Thanks for your incredible help, mate!

Thanks for the help. The override step was critical for me, when migrating from a Cloud Key Gen 2+ to Unifi Addon in Home Assistant (docker based).

So quick and useful. Appreciate it sir. 3 step process that did exactly what I needed. Everything moved quickly and painlessly. Migrated from a self-hosted Unifi Network application running on a Raspberry Pi to a Cloud Key Gen2 + so I could add the Protect app and have everything hosted in one OS. I was worried about the difference in software versions, but it worked fine. Went from 7.2.97 to 8.1.113 on the new console without issues. Thanks again for keeping it simple and to the point!

Thank you so much. To confirm, because I don't want to screw up. Going from a laptop to a raspberry pi 4 (always on and running Jellyfin). No problems expected. Toasty Answers, you are a boon of knowledge. Weekend project. OK, so that was easy. Got it done in 30 minutes. Had to install the controller on the pi and then migrate over. So far, it looks like all is well. Much appreciated.

Thank you very much, I moved to new NAS controller, from my old laptop I just wanted to re-format, this was perfection. Only one AP and local user/password all worked a charm.

I have Unifi controller (6.4.54) and want to migrate to Unifi Network Server (The Controller on website are older than the existing one). This apparently replaced the Controller. However the Unifi Network Server failed to start so I cannot open it to restore the backup as the instruction stated.

This should work when Migrating from a Gen1 Cloud Key to a Gen 2 Plus Cloud Key right?

I would probably lean more towards the site export method when going between cloud keys.

What is the method you normally use? I'm going to move from self hosted to a Cloud Gateway Ultra soon.

I typically use the site-export method especially when going from self hosted to cloud hosted.

0:48 Which IP address are we putting in here? I noticed it's not the same IP as your 'UAP-Pro.' I have a USG-3P, so I was going to use that IP address. New to this, thanks.

Thank you for these very informative and easy instructions. However I am unable to find the 'Advance' option after the backup is done. I am using version 6.4.54.

Does this method work when the old controller is the hosted Unifi one and the new controller is self-hosted/local install?

I host my own controller. I do not have a cloud key (although I probably should but that's when I get to getting a UDM Pro). I run my controller on a FCOS host using Podman. Currently for my automated backups I pause the controller container, take my backup and then resume the controller container. Can you compare and contrast my approach with your approach? Is the controller backup feature version independent? If not, what are the details (especially when migrating to a significant controller upgrade)?
@ToastyAnswers
@ToastyAnswers 8 месяцев назад
Since your backup strategy is to backup the entire container, it is more like having an image of an entire Windows machine that happens to run the controller (I know it isn't really the same... but the concept is). I won't say this is a bad idea, but you are limited to restoring the container "as is". Sure, you can move it around to other hosts and restore "at-will" but it is the same image of the controller. A backup from the controller is a "settings and/or history" backup of the controller data itself (not anything required to "run" the controller). It is actually version independent (to a point). You can install a newer version of the controller somewhere and import the settings from your older version (there are limitations, but this is how it works in general). Off the top of my head, the biggest difference would be "container corruption". If your container becomes corrupt and unusable, your backups will also be corrupt and unusable. Since you're taking an image of the entire runtime along with the data, there is the risk of your restores just duplicating any problems with the entire container. On the other hand, if you have a settings backup, you can restore it to any running controller as long as the version is within reason. It does not rely on the container being healthy to restore. Hope this helps. I don't think your choice is a bad idea. It's just a different approach.

@@ToastyAnswers Thank you. My apologies as I was not specific enough. I don't back up the entire container I just take a backup of the storage volume for the controller data and logs on the host itself (so the host volume path that is mounted inside the container).

I just want to add, as it was just yesterday: my cloud key gen2+ stopped working due to a HDD failure. I replaced it with a Samsung 870 SSD. I had a backup from some time ago, so I was prepared, luckily everything was there after the first boot with the SSD. I had no cloud backup. The SSD works like a charm. If you don't use the NVR or just use it lightly I really recommend this replacement. The controller now also runs much cooler (37°C vs. 55°C) as of roughly 24 hrs in use. I don't like that they removed the backup schedule if you don't use the remote option for their cloud services, that really stinks.

I actually didn't know they removed the backup schedule without cloud services. That is something I will have to look into!

@@ToastyAnswers That means - Firewall rules, e.g. block VLAN from router DreamMachineGUI-Access, needs to be changed, right? Currently my Cloudgateway Ultra has x.x.20.1. I thought "restoring" the backup would change the IP of the UDM as well to the legacy IP of CGultra ...
