In my ongoing quest to rackmount ALL of my important gear, the UniFi UDM-Pro is an absolute must.... mainly because my UniFi USG has been sitting on the floor in my office since I moved in. BUT NO MORE! My firewall is now happily nestled into my server rack.
Huge thanks to Ubiquiti for sending out the UDM-Pro, switch, and cameras for review. Full reviews are upcoming!
But first... What am I drinking???
Shaven Yak from Wichita Brewing Co, a 5% English Brown Ale. Strangely enough, while this has a pretty good malt, it actually reminds me of New Belgium's Nitro Cold Brew Coffee. Like, it's almost identical, and it's playing tricks on my brain.

I got a UDM pro a few months ago when I started working from home all the time and had fiber installed. Also have WAN failover set up and working (because of the working from home thing). It's been really solid, I like it.

I know knew zero about managed switches, etc. Before Christmas, I purchased the USG-3P, US-8-150W, US-24-250 and 4 APs. Took me a few days to figure out but I did it! This system is sweet. I was so happy, I went out and got 4 cameras. Love the plug and play features!!! I’m very happy!

It appears that the 8 ports actually share 1Gb across a backplane. So it's really not that great for using as a switch. Not sure why its included. If it were POE, it would be good for relatively low throughput IP cameras, but its not even that.

I'm glad you had a good experience with this unit; mine was aweful - borked firmware after borked firmware, issues constantly. It never gets full 10GB throughput on it, there are all sorts of issues with VLANs and the IPS is pretty low grade. We had a manager that wanted us to implement one of these as our FW/router for our office (~1000 people) and since the pandeminc, the issues have stacked up to such a height we pulled it and went back to known good hardware. Further edit: SFP issues, no fail-over support, no support from Unifi in Canada.... this device is not an Enterprise ready device. That being said - I've got one at home and it's great, works super well and because of my simplified network; there aren't any issues - save the SFP issue.

This. I don't own a UDM-pro myself, but I might be interested if only it didn't have a terrible reputation for its firmware. I hope any follow-up video addresses well documented issues with this product as its current reputation stops me from considering it (already own the mentioned 16 XG, so serious about being a prospective customer).

@@sanderdelft It honestly felt like it was Beta Hardware for the first released units and they were running Alpha/Beta firmware on that hardware making a bad issue even worse.

@@ScotchGuy indeed, but the problem with that is those early adopters flood the forums with negative reviews/feedback. It is much harder to gauge the actual state of the product further down the line (early opinions tend to get high Google rankings and some people are just parroting those early opinions).

Maybe not shown on camera, but please put a wrench on the cable fittings at input/output of wallplate, splice at computer desk, and at the modem. The amount of electrical ingress a 1/4 turn could save vs intermittent speeds for you and the neighbors is tremendous. Thanks

Thank you for this! I was wanting to get unifi and poe in my home but I didn't want to have to pay $500 all together. I had no idea this was even a thing from me browsing their website, that is an incredible deal and a great way to start your home network with plenty of upgradeability down the line. Just a heads up but the 8 port switch on the udm pro only has a gigabit backplane so the maximum switching speed is only 1 gig so i would recommend using the sfp+ port to connect your switch to it. (otherwise i am loving my udm pro)

Enjoyed the video. Rambo is a very handsome cat. Cats do make good heat sinks. Just installed my UDM Pro with an USW 16 PoE switch and an access point. Now, just need to learn how to set up vlans.

Tried it. Now trying to return it. You can't setup more than 1 static WAN IP, and its Manual IPSec is... lacking in stability with an AWS VPC Tunnel. Oh and that 10Gb SFP+ WAN can only do 1Gb or 10Gb at this time so 2.5Gb isn't supported so sadly cannot plug in providers supplied GPON ONT module for full speed. Finally that 8port Gigabit switch uses a 1gigabit backplane but to be fair that's enough for something like a DHCP server, etc and i was using the 10Gb SFP+ LAN to the network anyways. Just a few minor things mean it won't work for my needs at this time but maybe one day with updates.

I expect this won't work, but I'm curious for someone to try a port multiplier on the SATA drive connector, and when that doesn't work, try something like StarTech's "dual m.2 sata adapter with raid" to try and shoehorn some data redundancy into that single drive bay.

UDM PRO accepts ISP optical fiber input? I mean, i receive the ISP signal by optical fiber, can i connect it directly to the UDM PRO and then distribute to my home routers? 19" rack is compatible?

Hi - can you see your L3 Switch from Mikrotek in the Unifi Console - so that its detected as a swtich? or do you see all Devices Pluged into the Mikrotik Switch as they were plugged directly into the UDM Pro? If you the see Switch and all its Devices in the network topology in the udm pro - how have you configured it?

Currently, my setup is a unifi controller on an Ubuntu server and my cameras managed on two other ubuntu servers. My question is, would this solve/be a solution to manage all my 170 unifi WAPs and 60+ unifi G3 and G4 cameras.

The cloud argument is great.... if I can connect it to my private cloud. Then it would be a positive. Being locked in to the vendors cloud? That isn't cool at all.

Was this controller back up you used on a local control or remote one? I would like to do something like this but my UniFi controller is hosted remotely and was wondering if this would still work. Either that or do you know if it is possible to adopt the UDM Pro into an existing controller in spite of it having controller capabilities itself?

Fyi port 10 is sfp+ also supports redundant wan failover, or load balance. I don't believe you can use it as your primary wan connection tho. One OF the MANY dumb issues with the udm-pro. Check the forums with all if your use cases before you purchase this.. you've been warned..

Read the forums and look for some of the reviews here on RU-vid. Although I have Ubiquity AP's myself I will personally stay away from the UDM Pro until the software (hopefully) matures. I went with pfSense (home build x86) and have not regretted it for one moment.

I installed the UDM Pro about a week ago in the nonprofit I work for and I can tell you, I'd go with literally anything else after my experience. I can live with the fact that you need an active internet connection to set it up but the online account should be an option, not a requirement. What's way worse, if your internet drops, you can no longer access the web administration and debug. The only option is to use CLI, if you enabled it beforehand. Next, there's no way to have multiple IPs on one WAN interface. Seriously, wtf?! The AP setup is fiddly and you're given way less options than you should be (disable 2.4 GHz network, for example). All in all, this is by no means a router for an enterprise. It's a toy for your home lab. :-(

@@CraftComputing Let me know if you'd like any other info from me. :-) I'm currently in the process of transferring the whole network (about 40-50 devices) onto the UDM Pro so I'm sure I'm gonna find both more glitches and things I like. Deployment environment - pub, library, study place, ... and all the bits and pieces of a student-oriented nonprofit. I'm used to Mikrotik so the UDM is kind of a shock for me. My Twitter: @tomaspre

@Pierre Beauregard: It only has 1 drive bay anyways so no redundancy if a drive fails you lose everything, so you wouldn’t really want to use it as a NAS anyways. Just saying, thanks!

I’m glad it’s working for you. I tried to install one as just a protect server and it failed. I had Lan and Wan on the same subnet. Interesting how it allowed that as it should be invalid. It would not work period without wan. Felt very rushed. I get it’s use case but not allowing for a alternative is very restrictive
