You need a short DAC to patch between the router and switch, that will free up a port
@LarsKlintTech

I am seriously considering upgrading to 10Gb on the internal network, and that would definitely be part of it.
@petervandebeek5980

@@LarsKlintTech Yeah, but a 0,5m DAC is the first I would connect. Connect everything with SFP/SFP+ ports and never look back. (and a DAC is cheap too and a very stable way of connecting the network devices itself) But yeah, nice switch. I like the all-ports-in-one-row. Always wanted the Enterprise-24-PoE, but since there is the Pro Max 24- and 16-PoE I would go for this one. PoE++ is handy too.

@@petervandebeek5980 I am thinking in content mode, so I'd probably update as much as I can in one go to ~10Gbit, including the DACs and wireless connections. I really love the ports being in one row too. I probably means Unifi only have to carry one length of etherligting patch cable too 😂

Great video. Any chance you could do another walkthrough of your whole farm setup with all the changes over the years? Reason I ask is I have a very similar farm setup to yours and I'm about to pull the trigger on updating to Unifi. I started with your one from a few years ago and took notes and have been binge watching your videos and updating the models, etc. where you have upgraded over time. Thanks again for all your videos

There is a locking tab on the back of the switch that will keep the power cord from accidentally being unplugged when it is engaged. I did not see you use the locking tab when you plugged in the power cable to the back of the switch. I highly recommend that you use it.

Thanks for another great Video. It looks great and i also have a few POE++ units on my network (USW-Flex). Few questions - If you dont have a patch panel and use normal RJ45, does it show any effect ? (Where i need it i have 30 meter RJ45, not at patch panel) - Usualy unify has a day/night schedule where during the day displays are on and in the night they are off unless you tap on the display. Does this also apply for Etherlighting ? I dont think i would invest in the switch, if i could redesign my network i might. Where i need POE++ is in two shead's outside with only 6 ports, would be a bit overkill. Also does it support outside use ? If i could only have one / two main switches, yes i would invest.
@LarsKlintTech
@LarsKlintTech 23 дня назад
Really good questions Thomas. You will still get some lights with a standard patch cable of course, but not as shiny. It also depends on what style of patch cable you have. In short, it won't looks as awesome. No, the etherlighting doesn't follow the night time schedule, which is a bit odd. Might be a future update? They are not outdoor rated, but there is a 16 port version too, which can be mounted on wall, desk, or in a rack. Thanks for watching ☺

As a datacenter designer the question is why?? And look who much extra power it taking
@LarsKlintTech
@LarsKlintTech 18 дней назад
I don't know why. Can you share your concerns from your point of view? What are the issues you see in a data center? I don't think the power consumption is a real hurdle compared to the usage of the devices themselves. A standard LED bulb uses about 100-200mW, so the 24 ports use 2.4-5W, and that is only if they are in use and at max brightness all the time. If you have a big bank of them you might get usage of 50-100W, which again is only if they are all used on max brightness.
@krakakapaul
@krakakapaul 14 дней назад
As a datacenter expert my question is why is it the other side of the cable is not lighting up. So engineers save valueble time tracing cables and got a visible identifier to disconnect the correct cable.
@LarsKlintTech
@LarsKlintTech 14 дней назад
@@krakakapaul It would be useful (and shiny) having the whole cable light up. If you had two Pro Max switches connected with etherligting, you would get both sides lighting up though.
@krakakapaul
@krakakapaul 14 дней назад
@@LarsKlintTech they just need to add a string of clear plastic inside the cable. This will transfer the light to the other end of the cable. For aggregation you will use the SFP ports and etherlighting ports are designed to connect clients. The problem is money as they grab an off the shelve network cable and add their own connectors to it is cheaper than fabricating your own network cable.
