I never appreciated how much time, patience and artistry it takes to craft an effective fishing lure. The interesting thing about skills like these is they're practical and useful.

This reminds me of my grandpa. He used to make flys like this when I was young. I remember playing on the floor in his warm shop while he did this and I always got so tired in there that I'd fall asleep on the recliner he had in there. I didn't know it but that was my first taste of ASMR. Great memory. :)

The subtleties within the perception and hunting instincts of a fish that necessitate such specific and skilled craftsmanship here are what really fascinate me. I suppose it’s a massively long lineage of trial and error which allows craftsman like this to be able to conceive of truly effective lures.

As a fly tier, myself, I know that most of us who take very seriously would be taken aback by anyone who calls the art “crafting fish bait.” Fish bait is things like worms, minnows, and dough. Even calling them “lures” would come across as abominable. Lure-making is a whole other thing. Not a big deal for an ASMR video, but now you know. This was a good find. Thank you for sharing 🙂👍

If I were a fish and I knew the craftsmanship this guy exercised to make these exquisite lures - I wouldn’t bite them because that might ruin them....:)

I use a different vise which I love but I can see the benefits of the Novise it sure makes dubbing so easy, Norm was a master in his craft sorry to see him go but not forgotten.

I learned to tie flies when I was a teenager. Was good at it, even made money selling them. For some reason I got out of it and haven't done it in 20 years now. Still fly fish a lot though. This has me wanting to take it up again.

Norm is very nice guy, Norvice was my first vice when I first started fly tying in 2013, inspired by him, I bought his whole system, he even ship me a whole set of tube fly needle when only one pc was short shipped. All at his own cost to all the way to Singapore. I could not use the vice to it max like him. But think needs more practise on this vice. I also bought some others like Marce petite jean Master vice, Stonfo transformer n the regal revolution vice. Love the Lw vice but it is no longer in mfgr n ebay price I cant afford. I still love seeing his video of him tying all his flies. Norvice is extremely good for making extended bodies and wired brushes dubbing and hackle.Very sad that he is longer with us.

Been revisiting Norm a lot lately. I will say I think his older videos are even better, probably because he's using a pin-on condenser microphone instead of a phone or whatever is used here. Wish I had the motivation and energy to compile them like this.

Makes me feel bad for the dozens of Flys I lost as an inexperienced kid.. all the times I broke a line off losing the fly out of basic impatience makes me feel a little bad.. but mad respect to him and the people like him who used their craft to give me the experience in the first place!
