This is an amazing view of the Big Boy up close & personal! Thank you I really love this train! God Bless the Engineers that keep this beast on the tracks! Love from a happy train viewer from Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape, South Africa ❤❤❤❤
@@peter7624 hello I used to live in Germiston on Parkhill road. When they were constructing the cutting, one of the drivers of what to me as a young teen the biggest machine ever saw & I used to wait at our gate & I would get onto his machine up & down - wow I was a happy girl! I think that was the beginning of my love of big machines, I used to photograph them, loved fire engines ❤️❤️🙈🙈🙈
Ed Dickens and the crew of the 4014 is really amazing 🤩. They work so hard to get Big Boy 4014 up and running. It is a very incredible steam locomotive 🚂 I love it so much.
When I hear Big Boy's whistle I'm hearing 4 things: "I'm big, I'm proud, I'm here and stay out of my way!" One of my favorite things is to see people of ALL ages enjoying admiring and loving something together.
I like the REA car. It stands for "Railway Express Agency". I was working at Logan Airport in Boston when REA disappeared and Federal Express almost magically appeared the next day!
I wondered what purpose was of the gizmo the engineer placed by his window. After recognizing the lockout locks hanging from it, I knew in an instant. To explain, anyone working on the locomotive has a personal lock that no one has a key to. The lock is put is put in place before they begin work. As people finish their task their lock can be removed and it is understood they are out of harms way and everyone is accounted for. Lock out Tag out, WTG UP!
4014 is like oh hell no! been there done that. i don't collect dust at museums. Been the king of ruling the rails and always will be. see ya later alligator
Of note at this stop is lubrication going on. The connecting rods did not work well with roller bearings, and these are manually lubricated plain bushings that need manual lube every couple of hundred miles. UP has this capability throughout it's entire rail system.
I heard they fitted it with the whistle normally used on the 844 since 2011. Gotta say, it’s incredible how the same make/model of whistle could sound so different (and, in this case, better) based on the tiniest of factors :)
Yes, the whistle moved from the 844 is actually the original 4014 whistle. The whistle used at first on the rebuilt 4014 was what was on it after it's decommissioning in the 1960s. The 844 will need a new whistle, as most are worn out from use.
Wow I see they finally put a cover on the chain on the front driving lubricator I recall last year I didn’t have the cover before that’s another feature besides him receiving a duel beam headlight And swapping whistles with 844
He mentioned he has an airplane that must be a jet liner or huge cargo plane, he never stated what kind of plane.. But Yes the Big Boy is heavier than most airliners including the Boeing 747 or could be about the same weight when 747 is FULLY loaded!! The only plane that out weighs the Big Boy is the AirBus A380 and the Russian Cargo plane Antov 225, which was destroyed the the recent Ukraine war!!
I only had a quick moment to be on camera, and I should have explained my comparison better... I fly an Airbus A-350, the biggest jet they currently make. With over 320 passengers, almost 20 crew members, and a full load of gas, the 350 maxes out at a little over 600,000. Big Boy weighs twice that! It's amazing.
@@JoelRogersCoasterGallery Thanks for letting us know what plane you fly..lol That's cool that your a pilot and a train enthusiast as well.. One thing though, the A380 is the biggest jet liner Airbus makes, maybe they stopped making them.. I think I heard they are going to stop.. But the A380 weight like 1 million pounds fully loaded!! That a heavy bird!! I think the big boy weighs about that too..
@@RockbeThyName As you can see from my other videos, I mostly document roller coasters. You can see my work on CoasterGallery.com as well as this channel. I must admit that I haven't done any major train videos. Airbus stopped producing A-380s recently, so my 350 is the largest one they make now. The 380 has a max takeoff wight of about 1.2 million pounds, so it was about the same as Big Boy.
That's insane engineering for 1.2 million pounds to even fly!! Talking about the A380 of course.. Yes I heard Airbus is going to stop producing them.. Sad, but not enough buyers I guess 😔 and they can now fly overseas on two engines these days!! I wasn't aware you are a Rollercoaster enthusiast, I love coasters too!! I'll check out your channels.. Thanks for sharing.
Almost impossible to find the 32v 250 Watt bulbs that were used in the original headlight. So they have resorted to using a vintage Pyle National single to dual beam headlight adapter plate. It allows a pair of 200 Watt, 32v sealed beam bulbs to be used. And that also offers redundancy as well.
This is the second video I’ve watched with this train can somebody tell me why they have the diesel electric train included with the big boy is that just for electric power (lights etc) ?
I know it is a backup for locomotive power. If Big Boy has a problem, the modern diesel can push it back to its home it Wyoming. I don't know if it is used to generate electricity for the rest of the cars.
