Day 31 (June 30): Today for lunch: Climbing up Union Pass (9,212ft), 76 miles, 4200 feet climbing, lots of fun.
Thanks, Wyoming, for another beautiful day with green meadows, high mountains, colorful flowers and even the last few snowfields! 🙏🌺
Out of Pinedale, our ride takes us through lush farmland - it's a treat to ride the remote dirt road with ranches and mountains as a backdrop. We love the expanse views and are still not tired of them after many days on the GDMBR.
When we head into Bridger National Forest the road gets rougher and the scenery more alpine. Pronghorns are racing across the meadows and cross our way - they seem to be more curious here than in the Basin...
We progress to Teton National Forest then Shoshone National Forest.
Beautiful flower meadows, clear alpine lakes, and the occasional left-over snowfield skirt our way. The views up Union Pass are amazing- mountains everywhere! And, the Crooked Creek Ranch is a wonderful place for us to finish the day and enjoy a big, vegetarian dinner. Homemade chips, guacamole, burgers and sweet potato fries - great fuel for tomorrow! It’s also so fun to see the Cowboys finish their day and share a drink and story… amazing West!

What a pleasant video. Very well done! I really enjoyed it. I have been wanting to do a section of the GDMBR while visiting Grand Teton, NP. This is perfect! Thanks for posting your link to the Strava activity. It certainly takes the guesswork out of it.

I have lived in Wyoming for 40+ years. If you noticed the antelope do not like to jump over barbed wire fences. Instead they will run along a fence looking for an opening that does not exist. So they end up going thru the fence, and therefore subject to being injured by the barbs on the lower strands of wire. And by the way antelope can easily jump over a fence but for whatever reason antelope try to go under or thru the fence. I have personally seen pronghorns jump over barbed wire fences on very rare occasions. I have enjoyed your videos. Good work.

This is probably the last one I'll get to watch before heading out from Antelope Wells on Friday. Really enjoyed the videos...will watch more when I finish my trip. Thanks.

Marion sets a helluva pace (grins) I have not seen a better roll through the south approach to Union Pass. Smart move through Griz country going to a lodge rather than camp overnight for sections where it is possible. I prefer camp some distance from road but I hike on the Bridget Teton NF at least once a year.

What reason gear did you use and how well did it do and last?

We used Gore rain pants and I had a Pearl Izumi Rain Jacket, Marion an Arcteryx. We both were very happy with our choices. Jackets are great as you can fit your helmet below the hoods. Also the GORE mittens from OutdoorResearch proved to be an excellent choice.

Another great episode with spectacular views. Of the 40 or so days you spent on the GDMBR, how many nights did you camp and how many were in small town motels or on-trail ranches? I like the idea of the latter, because you don't have to carry so much and can eat better. I'm wondering if it is possible to do the entire route this way. TIA.

Hi Marc, I would say we did 50:50. Will check the exact stats. We camped a lot more in the beginning, as we entered bear country and after what happened in Ovando, we were a little hesitant to camp up north. Also nice to get to know the towns. We were always ready to camp and decided mostly short notice. Nice feeling of freedom 😀

Another fabulous insight into the Divide, thanks as always for making the effort. I have a question, I am not familiar with how things work in the States, did you phone ahead to make a reservation at the Crooked Creek or did you just turn up and ask?
@MarionandFred

Thanks Lee! We called one day ahead what the situation was like. All worked out in the end!

I'm getting more excited by the day! Again breathtaking images. Have you seen the shelter nearby Mosquito Lake? For the accomodations, did you phone in advance for reservation and how many days in advance?

Hi Bill, thanks so much! So close to the start 😀 We mostly called one day ahead or even just booked same day. Leave you with limited choices sometimes. But we of course were also always ready to camp.

I came the other way over Union Pass last August. Between headwind, the baby heads in the road, and several spots just torn to pieces by ATV traffic, I've never worked so hard coming down a mountain as that one! I'm curious. When did you pass through Whitefish, MT?
@MarionandFred
@MarionandFred 2 года назад
Nice work Tracy! We passed through Whitefish 13 days after this one, so July 13, what made you curious about that 😉?

So impressive. Dream of doing this some day...although I'd prefer to be part of a group. Don't think I'd be comfortable on my own. Currently just road riding. Need a mountain bike for bikepacking but dont know where to start. Too many choices.

Step by step. And you definitely meet people along the way 😀, just like we met Tim and Lael on the very first day. Sometimes you will have days where you want to ride alone as well. That is an interesting perspective of this adventure...

I rode the Divide in 2019 with the ACA and we camped at Mosquito Lake. I walked off by myself at one point and on my way back observed a young male pronghorn for a full minute before he saw me. Really a special moment in my life. Your video brought it back. Thanks for posting.
