We took two Alu-Cab Canopy Camper equipped overland rigs up Union Springs with plans to camp at Flagpole Knob. My intent was to test out the Ram's capabilities a bit more on a trail with some more obstacles and to help Quinn gain more experience and confidence in himself on the rocks.
Along the way we found that the trail had grown in quite a bit since our last visit and that our full size Ram Rebel 1500 would be pushing through trees and brush for most of the trail. Pinstripes would be an understatement.
Obstacles were overcome and plans were adjusted as with any overland trip but in the end it was another fun day on the trail and a great night in camp with friends.

Nice video Herb. Looks like a great day on the trail - and not too crowded at Flagpole which is a nice change. Looking forward to more adventures!

Yeah, just 2 truck campers but we figured we had lots of time to make it to Reddish Knob and still find camp so we kept rolling.

Way tighter than it used to be. Of course we were usually there in the winter too so that helped.

Good stuff Herb! It’s only been about 2 1/2 years since we left VA but this definitely had me feeling a bit nostalgic.

I think I have been up there one time shortly after you and I were up there. It's grown up big time since then.

I went to reddish knob and camped on leading ridge, the wind was brutal Saturday night.

The wind up there seems to never stop. As much as I'd like to stay up top it's usually better to get down some. Last week the wind was whipping through the trees above me but at least they blocked it from me a bit.

I have wondered how a truck with a camper set-up like that would do on the trails. Seems like your rig can still get after it. Thanks for sharing.

It's still pretty capable. I just have to remind myself it's not one of my old rock crawlers.

Great video Herb! I enjoy watching them. I hope to take mine to Flagpole knob one day. Does that Colorado have a rear locker? You summed it up exactly when you mentioned the struggle of finding a place to set up for the night the further away from home. That is the challenge some days.
@Trailtec4x4

Thanks! I think you'd have to go mid week or super early to camp at Flagpole. It's just too well known these days. It's a ZR-2 so he has front and rear lockers. I just have the rear in the Ram but that's enough to keep it moving when it's teetering. Yeah, finding camp is a lot less stressful when you know you can drive home in 2 hours if all else fails.

Lucky #13. We have been to Reddish Knob. We have not done Flagpole or Meadow. When we did Reddish, we went to check out a picnic area listed on the Trails Illustrated map. It looks like you turned the direction of the old picnic area. The picnic area was gone, but a pretty good place to camp was there from the old parking area. Isn’t Union Springs the more difficult route to Flagpole? Flagpole and Meadows are on our radar as places to go check out. BTW….the graffiti at Reddish is crazy isn’t it?

Gotcha. Union is the hardest way to get up there. Going from Briery Branch is the easiest and Skidmore is the middle. Meadow is on Union Springs.
