Follow along as my son Gavin and I rebuild our deck on our lake house and I come up with a unique Baluster system out of Electrical Conduit. I am super pleased with the results and the Conduit only cost around $120 vs. $1500ish for cable railing system. Please don't forget to like and subscribe and share with a friend.

I did the Conduit Railing on my new deck five years ago. A forester bit works the best for drilling the holes. I just halfed a 2 x 4 and drilled them instead of the post so I could remove them if I had too.

Hello! Great video, thanks for putting this together. How's the railing looking after 4 years? About to redo our deck and I like this horizontal bar look.
@SpiralDesignWorks
@SpiralDesignWorks Месяц назад
a couple of the boards are rotted already. I think they just did not get the proper pressure treatment. The railing are looking good. holding up nicely. They have lost their luster are are a dull grey now and not shiny silver anymore.

This looks awesome but wow, your description says your cost was about $120 for the conduit, that's cheap! From looking at your video, seems you have 5 bundles of 10 conduit pieces, each 10' x 1/2". At the big box stores, a single 10' conduit is about $8. It would cost ( 5 x 10 x $8 = $400) now. My deck is 16' x 40' so going to need tons of conduit, but I like the look.

This was pre covid so prices have changed a lot.

Are they loose at all? Did you have to do anything to protect the inside of the hole or keep water from collecting in hole?

looks awesome- trying to decide between conduit or cable. how do you like it now after many years??
@SpiralDesignWorks
@SpiralDesignWorks 3 месяца назад
it has lost its luster like you would expect from zinc coated steel. So is sort of a dull grey. But I actually like the patina it has.

Glad to hear it! I am very happy with the outcome. I am making matching gates this weekend to keep our old dog up.

The video of you installing the pipe was so fast I couldn't tell how they were installed. It sounded like you drilled the holes deep enough that you could slide the conduit, but then how did you keep it form sliding out? Also some of your holes looked like they went completely thru the posts.
@SpiralDesignWorks
@SpiralDesignWorks 3 года назад
The middle post were drilled all the way through and corner about 3 inches. This allows the pipe to be 2-3 inches longer than the opening width. You poke the end deep into one side hole, then line up and pull it back into the opposite hole. They ended up being pretty tight in the holes. The ones that I bent around the tree I used a single screw in each edge to hold the pipe and keep it from rotating. Thanks for watching.

Hi Thank you for a fab video. Loads of inspiration What size wood did you use for the top railing please ?

2x6 top cap and I ripped a 2x4 in half (1.5 x 1.75 for the urderside support. Thanks for watching.

Looks good. How secure is it?
@SpiralDesignWorks
@SpiralDesignWorks Год назад
most of the pieces are just stuck in the holes. 3-4 years now no problems. The bent ones I drove a screw through them to keep them in and not rotating.
@steves2340
@steves2340 3 года назад
So, can you actually move and remove them as well? Just trying to do something similar, but I was going to print out brackets with my 3d printer. I don't want them to move once they are in.
@SpiralDesignWorks
@SpiralDesignWorks 3 года назад
The ones I bent around the tree I pegged in place with a screw. I drilled a small hole about 1/2" in from edge into the conduit. Then drove a small deck screw. Locks them in good. All my straight ones I just left floating.

What happens if one of these get bent? Can they be pulled out and replaced?
@SpiralDesignWorks

yes easy to replace. So far so good been a couple years now.

how did you secure the railing so it can not be pulled out left to right?
@SpiralDesignWorks
@SpiralDesignWorks 4 года назад
Most of it was a tight enough fit I did not need to do anything. The bent ones around the tree I drove a screw through each one at the post.

How did you attach the split 2x4 top rail support? 1.75” as height or width? Have they been enough support? Any sagging? My posts are 76” apart so I’m a tad worried its not enough support but I’d like to keep the top rail as thin as possible as well. Thanks for the video!
@SpiralDesignWorks
@SpiralDesignWorks 4 года назад
Yes using a full 2x4 vertical for a top rail support really makes it thick. My posts are 5' apart or so and seem to be doing fine. It has only been 6 months. But the old deck just had top caps no support piece and they lasted 15-20 years.

Okay good job but don't you have to have a vertical expansion bar three and a half feet to meet code.
@SpiralDesignWorks
@SpiralDesignWorks 4 года назад
I imagine code varies from area to area. Probably depends on the deflection of the material used. Cable may deflect more that this. Check with your local permitting office before starting any project. Thanks for watching.

Did you glue them in or are they loose?
@SpiralDesignWorks
@SpiralDesignWorks 4 года назад
They are pretty tight in the holes. A few you can easily rotate if you try. The ones with bends I pinned in the to post with a screw to keep them from rotating. Thanks for watching.

I know I will have kids stand on railing ... how do they hold up to weight?
@SpiralDesignWorks
@SpiralDesignWorks 4 года назад
They will bend if a kid is jumping on them for sure. but at around $1.25 for a 10 foot piece easy to bend back or replace. Thanks for watching.
