In this video I improve your art sketchbook pages with artist research. This particular video is part 4 in a series of videos based on a GCSE ART unit on maps. I show how to experiment with materials, in particular pencil and graphite, I also record personal ideas and show you how to present information on an artist.

I’ve often seen bit of UK student sketchbooks and wondered how and why they are done in the way you demonstrate here. It’s the pursuit of a line of enquiry, a term that’s new to me. It makes more sense than for someone to simply direct to asking questions. I assume that this sort of “report” is to address certain school assignments. Without exception all I’ve seen are beautiful. Thanks for this, Tom.

Hi Tom - I am a teacher from New Zealand. My students LOVE your videos. I used the Developing Ideas one during lockdown and with my younger students when we returned to school. I work with 11 to 15-year-olds and the work my younger ones produced was amazing. I kept telling them that it was a big challenge at their age. The engagement in class was very high. Thank you so much!

Dear Tom, I have followed your unit on maps it has been brilliant looking at artists i haven't come across before. I have learned new techniques such as charcoal and turps and had fun. I am over 50 and a teacher and this has been a lovely way to unwind and learn during online teaching in lockdown. I wish i had had done art at school and beyond but you have shown me it's never to late to learn new things. Please carry on making these wonderful tutorials even though lockdown has finished. Thank you so much. Cressida

It’s great to know you have enjoyed them, rest assured I will be carrying on with making tutorials, I just have to work around my day job. Cheers for commenting, really appreciate it 🙌

Hi Tom. It's Richard. - I'm a photographer and beginner street-artist from Mossley in North East Manchester. As a photographer, my work is usually always digital but when our lockdown began, I found your channel and have really enjoyed watching your videos every week. Some of the tricks and techniques are absolutely brilliant and you've really inspired me to start being more creative at home. I've started painting with acrylics which I'm really enjoying a lot and I'm also working on a project where I can use some of your transfer-techniques to build some new pieces of street-art. Thanks for putting these together every week Tom, it's been absolutely brilliant and long may it continue!

I'm from Barcelona (Spain) so I had to google what GCSE are 😂 I started with scrpabooking (😑) but now I'm more and more into mixed media projects. And I love to apply some of the techniques you show in your videos in my own work. They get very popuplar when I show them in my mini workshops 😊 Next thing: trying to replicate this one project (even tho I don't have to pass GCSE). I loved this idea for an art journal! Thanks (again) for everything you teach here. :)

Hi Tom, I discovered your art channel over the Easter weekend. I've been lucky enough to be able to rediscover my art after a 20 plus year break (business and life commitments). You have such enthusiasm and great ideas, teaching has changed so much since I took my art exams. I wish I had had the benefits of your tutorials back then, but I'm catching up now! Thank you for your great videos, they're so informative and fun. Jaine, in glorious Monmouthshire.

Hi Tom. I love your videos. You make everything look so easy. Thanks to you, I am paying much more attention to organizing my art journal and adding details about the process and artistic intention. Studying art through RU-vid has kept me sane through our Covid lockdown. I find your videos very informative and inspirational and I can't thank you enough for sharing your expertise and talent. Hi Tom, I'm watching your videos for the wealth of mixed media techniques you present. By "primer" do you mean gesso? I think I spotted "gesso" on the label 😊 What is your substrate for that technique? Another question: I've seen you use quink ink a few times. Can you explain why this is the brand/type that you prefer? (Maybe a future video about inks?) Ooh, another question! Does the turpentine "set" the graphite, or could you cover a whole sheet like that and use it as graphite tracing paper? Also, I don't oil paint so I don't have turpentine, but I have some kind of gel? stuff called something like Gamblin or Gamsol for blending oil pastels and pencils. Will that work on graphite instead of turpentine to get those dark areas? Thank you ❤️ I'm continually amazed at how much the UK high schoolers have to do -- glad I can do what I want 😄! Cheers :)
@TomQuigleyArt
@TomQuigleyArt 3 года назад
Yes I meant gesso, just use it a primer so sometimes use that term. Turps and while spirit will work the same as gamsol, it’s just less expensive and refined. Gamsol is better, purer and less odorous.

Hi Tom. Thanks so much for this tutorial, and all others. My head is buzzing with things to try, and a couple of canvases lie drying awaiting further application! I love the work by Andre Dejardins, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Sk_LiE5FltU.html I'm fairly sure he uses oils with liquin and a solvent spray. Like a previous tutorial you did with paper, I think he sprinkles the canvas with charcoal dust, crunches it up and soaks in a basin of water. But I'm not clear as to the type of canvas. It seems almost like a woolen blanket as he stretches it over the frame before stapling, yet when he works on the canvas it's like it's polyester. If you or anyone else can shed some like as to his technigue, that would be great. Thanks.
