Two comments: 1) Absolutely Capital-L LOVE this type of breakdown! This is exactly the sort of analytical stuff I love seeing and wish I could get more of. So happy to see a more complete version (going beyond just the QB) that analyzes the entire 49ers O vs. Chiefs D matchup as a preview for the Super Bowl. Hope you post a similar one with Chiefs O vs. 49ers D tomorrow! 2) Seeing this--right out of the gate--just ever more clearly illustrates the differences in quality between Brock Purdy and Jimmy G. I was never a Jimmy hater. I very much appreciated what he did for my 49ers. But all these plays just starkly contrast the differences between them and how much CLEARLY better Brock Purdy is. I don't know how Brock will perform Sunday or going forward in his career, don't know if he'll be able to ascend to a perennial Pro Bowler or into the ranks of potential HOF'er. But Purdy is clearly several critical steps ahead of where Jimmy is or ever was. Whatever Purdy's ceiling or limitations may be today, I feel exponentially more confident in Purdy's ability to improve his arm strength and accuracy and to adapt and grow and evolve with more time and experience than I do in Jimmy G's ability to improve his vision and accuracy to ever reach the level of Brock Purdy.

@@DanielGonzalez-vo5ni I hate jimmy because of every time he put his receivers on bad situations. More often then not Jimmy would throw late high behind, etc. to receivers giving defenders every chance in the world to murder em. It may not have been every snap, not every game but really consistent and nobody talks about it. So doing that while also being not that good its a bad combination for me at least.

Something to remember when the niners played the chiefs last year we had a ton of injuries going into that game and McCafrey was brand new.

Indeed. They played the 49ers at the almost-perfect time. You could see McCaffrey was going to be good, but they hadn't done their full install with him, yet, I don't think. And yeah, they were also banged up.

Niners had injuries after. They were fairly healthy for that 2022 game. Armstead was the only Niner that was out. Ward and Hufunga both played. There were no stars out on IR.

11:10 It's not a bad throw, but that's a receiver coming out of shadow into the sun, looking slightly into the sun to locate the ball that was launched from the shadow. I've seen ball-catchers struggle with that, before. People don't pay much attention to that aspect. Maybe I inflate it.

I do think the Packers and the Niners have incredibly similar offensive structure. And Love plays a lot like Purdy. Watching that Packers v Chiefs game in wk 13 I just hope our o line can protect Purdy like Green Bay’s protected Love. If Kyle allows a free runner to level Brock in the first quarter he failed. Can’t risk an injury

A lot of Kurt's terminology involves portmanteaus of the route concepts. Sled (swing/lead) and popcorn (pop/corner) are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head but I know there's more.

The key to slowing down the Chiefs' offense is to severely disrupt the continuity between Mahomes and Kelce. Being that this will be a very physical game like Super Bowl LIV, "No block" Kelce shouldn't be given a free pass on his timing routes and make him earn every single receiving yard. Bump-and-run him hard on every play. That should put a damper on a TE who lines up like a slot receiver and doesn't expect to get hit from scrimmage on every play. I should add that during Super Bowl LIV in 2019 against the Chiefs, the Niners put Richard Sherman on Travis Kelce where he did bump-and-run him on the line of scrimmage, effectively shutting him down for 3 quarters. However, as the game progressed, Sherman stopped doing this, resulting in a Kelce TD in the 4th quarter which brought KC back into the game. Perhaps the reason the Niners stopped using Sherman to bump-and-run Kelce was because they needed him to cotain Chiefs receivers Tyrek Hill and Sammy Watkins who combined for over 200 yards receiving. Thankfully the Chiefs no longer have Tyreek and Watkins, so they should be able to put a player on Kelce to bump-and-run him, then double team him afterward. Bang! Bang! Niner Gang!

Around the 2 min mark on that corner blitz, it was actually well designed for Jimmy to throw to Kittle on the post-corner. Jimmy just froze and didn't let it go. No way Purdy turns down Kittle on a post-corner with a safety backpedaling deep like that. So, yes, Purdy would've probably thrown that (or, at worst, the checkdown). That's the biggest difference. Purdy identifies quicker and is way more decisive.

Looks like the chiefs have the blitz side receivers covered up every time. If the typical read is to throw into the blitz then that is great scheme defense. 9ers need to throw away from the blitz it seems. Lots of open guys away from the chiefs blitzes

I don't put anything into what Purdy did in his FIRST EVER NFL action in that game vs KC in 2022. He came into a game that was over and tried to make some plays. KC was in a dime package the whole time. What he did accomplish was to break the rookie QB passer rating record, and now had the highest rating in NFL HISTORY for a QB's first two seasons. KC is ranked 27th DVOA against the run. Look for a heavy dose of CMC/Deebo pounding the rock. Also quick screens and lots of Kittle. The 49ers put up 450 yards of offense vs the Ravens, and were on the 1 yard line with just over 2:00 minutes. If they punch it in, it's a one score game with the two minute warning and the 49ers had all three timeouts, so these aren't garbage time numbers. Purdy only needs to play sound football like he's done all year. If the 49ers don't turn the ball over and control TOP, they win the game.

He hasn't done that all year though. Purdy has had some crappy games, frankly it's kind of a miracle the 49ers are in the super bowl. I want to believe, but I just think this Chiefs defense matches up well with the niners. They are big and forceful, they cause havoc in the pocket, they've been pretty good against the run recently, and the 49ers O line is suspect, especially on the right side. To me it's their game to lose, but I would give anything to see the niners win.

Add to that dime is that those were the rookie db’s for the chiefs. Who coincidentally won the Super Bowl as rookies, so they have have 20 games of ‘22 and another 20 games from ‘23, while also being a top 5 secondary this year

Nice analysis JT ! Purdy has the ability to make the plays but the Chiefs DC Spagnuolo has some real athletes to matchup on San Fran. No doubt Chris Jones will be a factor. Those play action CMC pass plays will also be key. Can they match Mahomes ability to escape & make plays ? Shannahan Vs Reed . Can the 49ers stop Pacheco from running them out of the game ? That sailling interception from Purdy in garbage time is an overthrow; as alluded the 49ers probably won't be able to overcome more than 1 turnover in the Superbowl, unless the defense forces their own. And even one pick 6 may be enough for the Chiefs to win. Mahomes isn't gonna gift the 49ers a Goff game, missing 3 or 4 gimme throws. Purdy is a good scrambler, but Mahomes is a top 3 scambler in the NFL 49ers need to bring up speed at the line of scrimmage to help contain Mahomes runs. Otherwise take a look at the 49ers/Bengals game this year with Burrows to get an idea of what will happen running for 5 or 6 first downs......Mahomes even more capable running. And Mahomes isn't looking for just 1st downs on scrambles, he's going for all the yardage he sees. In summary 49ers are in trouble defensively, and its on the offense this game to score and limit mistakes (turnovers) 2-fold. Think 49ers will need a points output into the 30s - and they're capable of it.

Wasn't that Omenihu's first game? Nah. I can't remember who wore #90 for KC D in 2022. Omenihu played from Game 6 until partway thru the AFCCG in 2023-24 league year. OK. It was Tim Ward losing his feet playing next to Malik Herring in garbage time on that nice throw. I'm not sure Ward's still with the team. They were giving him some looks in garbage time, 2022.
