Unison Hi-Z (Apollo Twin) vs Standard Hi-Z (Silverface / FireWire) Comparison

Same take with both units utilizing Voodoo Labs splitter, so both the Apollo Silverface (FireWire) and Apollo Twin (Silver) were recording simultaneously to their own Hi-Z input. Same converters in both units. Clocked to the same source. Be sure to use 1080p when watching for best audio quality.
Part 1 - Cleanish guitar comparison

Thanks for this, I own a (non-Unison) FW SF and always wondered what the difference was. It's similar but the true Unison does sound better, seems more "attached" to the input signal. Looking forward to Part II and how Bass sounds (use the Ampeg B-15N).

I used the SVT. The B15N is fantastic, though.

Hi Matt. klasaine (ken) here from the UAd forum. Great video! I don't always hear the difference but I definitely 'feel' it when I play and that has an effect on how I play.

Thanks, Ken! Yes, there are some things that audio examples alone can't capture.

Great run through, thanks for doing this. The difference was not that big that I'll immediately will buy a newer Apollo though :)

All this time I had no idea my silverface quad didn't have the impedance aspect (I can't believe I MISSED that detail) ..... I was kind of pissed, but this vid has helped calm me down, as it's a difference I can live with for now. thnx matt. i'm actually more excited about NAM (neural amp modeler) now anyway ....

The impedance aspect works on Mic, but just not Hi-Z, as you're probably aware, since that technology aspect didn't exist yet. Glad the vid was helpful! One other aspect that may be helpful is knowing that many of the Unison amp sims are in the 1M Ohm range. As a result, using a DI with 1M input impedance and the amp plugin in the insert slot will get a similar result.

@@MattHepworth I checked my manual and the quad has a 2.2M Ohm HiZ ..... My Great River Pre's HiZ is 1.2 M Ohm, w additional loading options. close enough? Thanks so much for your help!

I love my Great River pres and they have great HiZ ins, too. I think you'll be happy with the results. Won't be identical, but will sound great.

Thank you for this video. I was hitting a wall until I realized silver Apollo does not work with the amp emulation in Unison slot. I still use as an insert,but Uaudio kind of put this information under the radar since bringing out the blackface. I still love my silver face . Do you think the upgrade is worth it for the Hiz Unison technology?
@MattHepworth
@MattHepworth 6 лет назад
It really depends on how much you'll be using the amp sims. All other Unison functionality (mic preamps, etc.) are identical. I personally use two Silverface Apollos.

The unison version has more depth and a 3d sound, non unison sounds very flat to me. Great video.

I might be getting silverface terminology mixed up with the silver Apollo Twin. All I know, is that when amp sim is in Unison slot I don't get as much high gain tones as in the insert slot on my twin . Thank you for replying.

Subtle difference that makes a huge impact when stacking tracks and tracks in a mix.

Not if your a good mix engineer. However, I do dig the true unison flavor!

Hey Matt , I notice that on my Apollo twin x that the hardware meter on the front panel doesn’t work when I have a unison amp initiated , but when I remove the unison amp the levels are displayed on the front panel hardware meter , is this normal ? I hate asking you , but you might be my only hope , it seems that the folks at uad are dodging this one by not giving me a response . I appreciate your thought in this and curious if you are experiencing the same thing .
@MattHepworth

I'll let you know. I believe that's the case, though.
@MattHepworth

So Josh, meter should work with Unison initiated. In my testing it looks like it's the ACTUAL level seen at the Unison plugin input (post hardware/impedance changes, etc.), not the level at the Unison's output, though. Since this hardware interaction may pad down the input, you might not see much level compared to what your meter in Console will show. It may also be helpful to know that Apollos all meter pre-fader, so to speak, on the hardware. It's not affected by plugins inserted. Unison is the exception because it affects the input level directly.

Edited the above for clarity.

@@MattHepworth that is basically what uad told me a couple days ago also , Basically the meters are only showing the input signal aka my guitars pickups signal . Which is good I guess if using boost pedals before the hiz as to not clip the input . It would be cool if one could switch to monitoring the input meters to monitoring the output for when setting levels , but it’s fine . Thanks for getting back with me , have a merry Christmas!

Is it really a difference from Unison or AD/DA maybe?
@MattHepworth
@MattHepworth 6 лет назад
Great question! Yes, the difference is strictly Unison, in this case, as the Twin (mk I) has the same converters as the Silverface rack Apollo.

IMO, I do often fall for marketing and with UAD to the tune of ~$2000 right now. But my 62y/o maybe burnt out ears hear only the toggling between channels and no A/B difference after that. Maybe in mixdown/master the excruciatingly subtle difference folks say, will matter, but I think I've been sucked in yet again by hype. I've never been a tone hound though..near perfect pitch but I can't make use of whatever these differences are since I can't obviously detect them.

It's not night and day for sure. I've recorded many great takes through my non-Unison silverface.
