Good review, I recently purchased one of these and I cannot fault your comments. Out of the box the edge was dull. I could run my finger along both edges with no problems. I does have a keen edge though so sharpening it will not be too difficult and will improve its performance quite a lot I would think. Mine also has the stupid bend in it. With the flat of the blade on the " Carpeted" ground and a foot on it near the ricasso. By pulling up judiciously on the pommel you can straiten it, but be careful as it does not seem to be tempered all the way through the tang and bends and holds a new position rather easily. A bit too easily maybe, I am no expert. Personally, I am not all too ecstatic in the purchase, I hoped for a little better, perhaps it is the overpriced Australian market but in all, I am not unhappy with it either. I can train with it and its faults will help improve my techniques. When I lift a finer blade I will notice it and appreciate it more now.

This was a really helpful video especially for me seeing as how I was considering buying this sword and the only things holding me back were the bolt-on pommel and the price I also wanted to make sure I wasn’t going to be buying a cheap mall ninja (or in this case crusader) sword. I have many other weapons of higher price and quality but I think I would like to add this one to my collection. this video was extremely helpful and it was good to finally find a deconstruction of the sword. Just subbed and will be buying the sword soon!

Hey Dave, just wanted to say thanks for a great review. I am a sword enthusiast, but haven't quite had the means to buy an Albion piece yet (lol). I ordered this sword a few weeks ago and just ordered a second, with the intention of customizing it like you have done in another video. For the price point, it really is a great sword and I couldn't agree more with your assessments. Just wanted to personally thank you here in the comment section. You're the man. P.S. I love the music, especially in the cutting test. So epic! Keep sending this man swords!

Seemed a little wordy but if you are not familiar with swords, I think it’s a great review. Wish there was sound during the cut test. Your test was way better. 2 guys did a similar test but I don’t think they were swinging the blade correctly and had a couple of fails. I have 2 of Honshu swords, one them being the broad sword. BudK nailed it and the price is a steal compared to buying one at a RenFest, not knowing what you’re getting for 4 or 5 times as much. Great job dude!

Thanks. Yea wanted to make sure whoever watched this knew what I was talking about but had focus for a beginner's standpoint. There was music but RU-vid threatened a shut down so I cut out the music. Nice you have a couple models, I think for the price Honshu makes a decent functional sword. Yea some people don't know the expectation of a sword or do proper research for cutting so their sessions fail. But that's the learning process so hopefully they learn and improve.

Thanks for this! I was curious about the build & quality of this sword. I'd seen reviews of the katana in the series and was pleasantly surprised that folks said it was pretty good. I had thought the grip was harder plastic by the look of it. Rubber seemsvan odd choice as it's eventual wearing out would be a pain to replace, but it would take a while I imagine. The Windlass Cobra Steel line used rubber grips & if the rubber is similar it's like tires and like I said wouldn't wear out quickly. Also rubber must be nice for absorbing hand shock! It's definitely not historical but I think it looks good for a modern design.

If you hit a wooden chair with it, does the handle break off, like the reviews at budk ?
@DynamoSwordChannel
@DynamoSwordChannel 3 года назад
I don't think so. The sword you're mentioning must have had a weak tang or poor heat treatment. Something not uncommon with any production sword from any manufacturer. Sometimes a lemon sneaks through the quality control inspections. That's why its always a buyers responsibility to check their swords for defects before using.

I like the sword but the hex nuts holding the thermoplastic handle on mine are already loose hopefully not stripped? what size alllen wrench do you use? is t possible to get replacement nuts from United cutlery or Honshu Ive only swung at a few tips of leaves nothing traumatic in use barely have used the thing and its coming apart?
@DynamoSwordChannel
@DynamoSwordChannel 3 года назад
The thread fits a 10mm nut that can be picked up at any local hardware store. I'd suggest getting a locking nut for a better fit. This is the nut behind the hex nut. This is really the nut that matters because it is what holds the pommel to the tang. The hex is a 5/32".

Ya neglected to include the word "Tactical" I really dont understand the use of the word in this case. I was Very pleased with this blade. I had the Training version of this sword before i owned the actual sword and i was a Bit worried that there wouldnt be enough meat on the bone in the way of a Handle but i was happy to discover there was Plenty of meat to be had lol. Ive had my eye on Honshu for well over a year but felt their prices were a Bit High for something sold by BudK. I have been Less than impressed with a Number of their products in the past as well as their customer service staff and shipping department. I had no intention of giving them another Single dollar...and then their catalog arrived in my mail. When i seen this blade on the cover i Instantly fell in Love. I often talk myself out of buying things and this was No Different but i talked myself Into it more than i talked myself out of it. A damn fine sword for its price

I believe it Worth mentioning that I bought the damascus one so if that changes anything I would appreciate advice. Also great video
@DynamoSwordChannel
@DynamoSwordChannel 3 года назад
No as far as I know the sword should come sharp. As far as advice on maintenance and sharpening research on proper sharpening techniques is important. Dont go quick and cheap and get an accusharp tool as it can thin your edge too much and cause potential damage. Get yourself some 3in1 oil and Flitz polish for regular cleaning. Also don't go crazy and try and cutting or experimenting with hard targets like wood for cutting as it will eventually damage the sword. I know I made a few strikes to the helmet in the cutting segment but this was meant as a destructive test and not meant to show regular usage. Aside from that enjoy the sword and if you have any more questions feel free to ask!
@troythomas5702
@troythomas5702 3 года назад
@@DynamoSwordChannel is there anything you recommend for sharpening that is good for swords?
@DynamoSwordChannel
@DynamoSwordChannel 3 года назад
@@troythomas5702 probably the best market sharpener is the Keith Onion Worksharp. Its a bit spendy at over $100 but it is worth it. Aside from that there are two tried and true hand methods one using block and metal wet dry sandpaper and of course sharpening stones. Again technique is what matters so I'd study up on proper edge angles and grits to use either here on RU-vid or a good place with some great sharpening guides is Sword Buyers Guide Forum.

Not really, well I guess it depends on the type. But for you're average cut and thrust longsword/ hand and a half sword, the Honshu is a little too heavy and forward balanced. You hit the nail on the head when you reasoned "inexpensive". As many of the issues or faults to this swords fit and finish can be explained by its price point.

@DynamoSwordChannel
@DynamoSwordChannel Год назад
So the pommel won't come off the threaded tang portion? How did you get the rest of the hilt apart though? Or did you just remove the top nut and now the pommel won't budge? If yes to the second question, then either they hammered the pommel onto the tang end and the port hole was smaller than the thread and now it's wedged tight or they might have used epoxy on the pommel and that's why it won't move. Great review. Just want to point out, using apoxy between the guard and the blade is a bit shoddy craftsmanship. Cheaper yes but shoddy. Guard should be friction fitted but hey, it's what you can expect from a factory and not one hand forged. A few hard swings with a gap between the hilt with nothing but glue to hold, it will loosen and rattle like old bones. If it was me i would weld between the gap a bit, but i dunno how that would effect the heat treatment but it's below blade level so i think it would be fine.
@DynamoSwordChannel
@DynamoSwordChannel 2 года назад
Thanks! Yea I'm not a big fan of epoxy using either but it is what it is at the price point. Short cuts have to be made or everything would be a couple hundred dollars or more. Honestly there wasn't much gap to begin with so the epoxy wasn't really necessary but I've noticed most sub $300 manufacturers tend to glue areas regardless of how tight the fit is.
