At their recent developer conference Unity, Unity have announced details of the next generation of Unity (which I am assuming will be called Unity 7), as well as details about the ongoing support for the Unity 6.x branch.
In this video we look at the key new features at the core of the next generation of the Unity game engine. Be patient though, this is a ways out.

Unity is tackling everything Unity developers were begging for and barely got a response until now. I can't really think of a better way to handle their horrible past and image. They're not keeping deprecated solutions and re architecture what's needed. Some things in Unity were bare minimum like the animation system and Terrain system. Other things just had a lot of missing or annoying things in their core like ShaderGraph or render pipelines, And they talked about all of it.
@GameDragon2k

It almost feels like Christmas honestly. They pretty much addressed every single issue I have with the current versions of Unity. They way Unity kept adding new features while simultaneously maintaining older ones (BiRP/HDRP+URP, Particle System/VFX Graph, UGUI/UI Toolkit, Input Manager/Input System, etc.) was absolutely crazy. For years it just felt like a hodgepodge of alpha tested features. They really seem to be focused on what users want right now.

Revelation 22:12-14 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. @@GameDragon2k Particle System/VFX makes sense because one is CPU with physics and the other is GPU with more particles, most engines will have that distinction. But yeah it does feel a lot more focused now.

@bnaZan6550 Don't get me wrong. I understand the differences between the two systems. But the workflows are completely different. If you're going to re-tool the entire thing, then VFX Graph should really support both GPU AND CPU. Not simultaneously, obviously but the workflows shouldn't be as completely alien as they are currently. At least, that's my opinion.

Hot info, I was told by a product architect at Unity that Unity 7 / Next Gen is going to have a public Alpha soon, like 2025 kind of soon, he said they're going to make a public statement about it before the end of 2024. The ECS stuff is a good move, have a simple easy to understand and edit system presented to the user, and convert it to ECS in the background, the way it should have been from day one, like you have c# code which gets ultimately compiled to machine code, you'd be mad these days to use machine code directly, which is what DOTS felt like to me

It is a surprisingly good tool, I wish Microsoft adopted it instead of their mediocre solutions (such as WPF). It's like if HTML and WPF had a lovechild and that child was made of the best of both worlds, I'm not kidding. It still needs to mature into a full solution that is applicable for every problem, but I can't just pass over the fact that Unity, a game engine has managed to come up with the best UI development experience I had so far in any framework (for context I did not use the crappy visual editor, they still need to work on that lol).

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they pushed Unity 7 sooner than later. You have to think, Unity 6 has a lot of negativity tied to it right now due to the runtime fee fiasco. Yes, they terminated that, but it still has a sour taste in peoples mouths. The fact that they are testing 7 right now sorta tells me they are planning on a release of this within a year or so, most likely in beta. This would allow devs to get used to the new version along with letting asset creators to port their creations over with a good amount of time. Overall, I like the direction they are going. The main question I am asking myself is was all of this too late? I've personally moved on from Unity due to the long term support for projects and the upgrading nightmare along with online connectivity being forced to use the editor. In the end, what they showed was impressive, it's a bit late to the game (pun intended), but at least they are trying. Finally, Unity's team woke up to the reality of the indie's needs, even the asset builders will have their lives facilitated. Also, a nice set of buffs, such as CoreCLR, under-the-hood DOTS, and the rendering unification, seems to be the way to go. Although 2025 seems a little far, it will be worth the wait if they don't introduce another bizarre plot twist.

The only thing I'm afraid of is this OpenPBR thing and the block shaders, if they go too into it they will once again create some division, yes, PBR is great, but not all games use it, the tools provided should not cater to one type of rendering and, more importantly, should not come at the expense of capabilities like being able to use the tools to do other things, these block shaders remind of the old meta shader language they had (can't remember the name)

They are 100% still in damage control, there's no way it's a coincidence that Unity would announce this right after cancelling the runtime fee. I believe they are trying to sweep it all under the rug so that everyone forgets and thinks everything is good now, that way they can pull the same or similar thing again but this time without much controversy like they'll hope. The trust is gone and also keep in mind that Unity is a public company so they care more about the investors than the developers. Why is the CoreCLR thing so important if most people use IL2CPP? Is CoreCLR supposed to be faster than IL2CPP thanks to JIT compilation or something?
@realtimberstalker
@realtimberstalker День назад
Coreclr has AOT compilation, so it should be able to replace IL2CPP. In addition the new c# versions have better tooling and massive under the hood performance improvements thanks to span. Im hoping unity in their upgrade ditch their current low level stuff like native array to use span and so on.

@@peremoyaserra2749 I don’t mean to remove stuff like burst, though I don’t know if burst would work in core.
