I've been playing 2. c4 against the Sicilian (and writing about it) for years. The main drawback is that 2...e5 leads to a closed English and doubles your homework, which is why I gave it up. Also the e6 systems for Black will tear this opening to shreds.
@harrymills2770
@harrymills2770 3 года назад
I would never open 1. e4 for the same reason. it's easier for me to play more thematically and positionally, with 1. d4. I think if I knew a guy would accept the Morra gambit, then I'd open with Smith-Morra, because it's so much fun to play under tight time controls. It can get hard for Black to find something productive, while the piece development plays itself. It doesn't matter if the opponent's seen it, before, or not. White has a real advantage in development at cost of a pawn. Black can respond to all threats and still find his bishops locked up and white looking to attack with the exchange sack in the enemy camp..

@@harrymills2770 I'm always amused at how players not even rated 2500 talk about the first two moves as if they could hold a 0.2 edge the whole game with their marvelous technique!
@raygordonteacheschess5501
@raygordonteacheschess5501 3 года назад
@@harrymills2770 I find pattern knowledge is the key, not time controls. The Smith-Morra is a nice "threat" but my line in the Sicilian (apparently now named after me) is 2. d4 cxd4 3 Qxd4 Nc6 4 Qe3! As solid as any many line without all the homework and it ties in nicely with the Center Game, which I use against 1. e4. I call my line the Sicilian Center Game but Iv'e seen it referred to as the Ray Gordon line, which means some people have been seriously pirating my books (no one here of course) ;-(
@andrewmathematician7443
@andrewmathematician7443 3 года назад
@@raygordonteacheschess5501 Yeah, exactly, you're speaking out of my mind... I applied the thought of Center game to Sicilian - so Qe3 after Jc6 and it gives you very active play, nevertheless it's kinda really sharp because Black has more effective counterplay as he places the rook on Rc8 and it's really sharp afterall. I play it usually on weaker opponents to crush them fast, but I find it much less effective when playing 2150 players on Lichess and whether I'll play it in classical?... Definitely not, it's too dangerous to give Black that many time to realize his strong attack possibilities on Queen side.

It was a very nice video .But it did not cover the trickiest reply by black , namely e5( in the fiancitto line where black bishop resides at g7) ,controlling the square d4 the same way white controls d5.As a result, the structure is completely symmetrical and white has no specific advantage and the game is approximately level. In all these illustrative games black is punished for not controlling d4 by playing e5

Unless I'm wrong the idea here is to guide the game into a Botvinnik English which is a good opening in it's own right, but I don't think black should continue playing it as a Sicilian, we have changed from an e4 opening to d4. I'm usually delaying K-side development and starting with a6, Rb8, b5 and getting things going on the Q-side early after g6 and Bg7. But I do like the Botvinnik english and can see how it could work nicely against someone only comfortable with their familiar Sicilian lines/plans. Nice video thx
@yzfool6639
@yzfool6639 3 года назад
If black should not continue playing it as a Sicilian, then white has achieved one of his aims. As for your plan, white just adopts your strategy with the extra move: delaying K-side development and starting with a3, Rb1, b4, and getting things going on the Q-side early after g3 and Bg2. Completely sound with chances of advantage based on greater familiarity with the position.
@raygordonteacheschess5501
@raygordonteacheschess5501 3 года назад
A strong player as Black will NEVER allow White to do any of this. It's been a long time but I think I covered 2. c4 in The Fine Art of the Miniature. Against anything but 2...e5 you can get a Maroczy Bind with 3. c4 but that runs into difficulty against e6 due to the Bb4 threat. Usually though you can play to a single key position at move 12 but not with d3 for White, d4 instead and go to a Closed English if Black plays 2. e5, which can also arise after 1. e4 e5 2. c4.
@chesslover8829
@chesslover8829 Год назад
Interesting, I came to the same conclusion. After 2...e5, Black can easily stop White by playing normal moves.
