During the making of our film on the cost of living crisis going into Christmas 2022 (bit.ly/3Xst58D), we spoke to Fiona and Andy from Carnforth. In this video, they explain very clearly the struggles of being on Universal Credit during this very difficult period.
You can watch Fiona's full story here: bit.ly/3Zfa6zW

If this helps and I hope it does, the lady in the video should be eligible for PIP. That should give her about an extra £625 a month, if full PIP is awarded. This does not come off universal credit as it is a separate benefit. I used to be a Community debt and benefits adviser. Please message me if you need any help hon. All the very best.💕

They would have already knew this but people on benefits just love to make their situation sound worse than it actually is I mean I’m use to hearing people complain that their rent is to high or some shit not complain UC doesn’t allow them to live a luxurious life after paying their fucking mortgage

UK has the lowest welfare in Europe. UC is only 13% of the national average wage. Many European Countries are 30% some are as high as 45%. We also have the poorest pensioners. What most people ignore or don't know is that 40% of UC claimants are in work - Tories always gloss over that as it shows how poorly paid people are.
@Change_O
@Change_O Год назад
In Germany too they have poor pensioners. This is because there is no housing benefit or pension credit in Germany for pensioners. If they can't afford the rent from the pension they live in poverty. There's a documentary called Germany's Poor Pensioners.
@Change_O
@Change_O Год назад
Many German retirees often get low paying jobs or collect bottles on the streets to financially support themselves. It's only those that own their own property, that's paid off that are able to live a comfortable life, as the basic pension is good. If they rent it can be tough. Family members often financially support each other in Germany.

They will look at what you are paying towards a mortgage as a kind of savings you are accruing because your home is an asset . It's ridiculous as you still have to have somewhere to live and rent is often more than mortgage payments in the UK. I was saying to my husband on Saturday, having a savings pot and insurances is so important because one may be ok at present but who knows what is around the corner? Not sure why one would bother with a TV license these days, when one can get netflix for 6.99(half the cost per month and cancellable anytime).

First time I have been not breaking even and been going on minus. If I didn't have bit of savings, I would be homeless thanks to UC. I have to pay for private medicines that NHS won't cover. still have to pay rent big chunk going out of UC payment like 80gbp out of 150 gbp I get every two weeks. So half of it is going on council house rent and 70 or 80gbp is left to live on for 2 weeks. Can't imagine what people do if you are renting privately, UC will drive you into serious debt. I got a new job, but it's a terrible fit and driving my mental illness worse to the point I got no energy to cook and eat, also I can't concentrate at all to do the job when having emotional swings. But what can I do

Thanks for all your comments on our film 👍We are glad it has provided a lively debate during these very difficult times for many people. Fiona would like to respond to some of your comments herself: 'Thank you to so many of you for your kind comments and caring. Just to clarify some of the points - our TV license is £13 a month and not big issue for us.. I have been on PIP for some years now (full story here: shorturl.at/dxKM5). We have paid off chunks of our mortgage hence why it is relatively low. Attendance allowance is for people of pension age, PIP for under pension age. I will not be selling up and living in a tent! If you understood Parkinson's at all you would know this is not an option! I paid tax for thirty years and I never wanted to be on benefits. It's not a choice. My choice would be to be back at work. I had friends, felt part of society and I loved my job. Thank you. Fiona'.

And they then live where? Many places you can’t get a rental property for love nor money because you need a reference from someone or a guarantor who is working full time and earning over 21,000. @@Stringbean421 there are rental properties up and down the country for dss claimants. Many in very inexpensive areas. They could live off the remainder of what’s left after they sell and repay. And the dss would cover their rent so they’d be much better off. Also I don’t see the logic if she’s got a terminal condition why you’d care about a mortgage. The only one who’ll benefit is the husband who will survive her. And I find that kind of selfish if I’m honest. The better thing to do is to sell up and have more cash. Should go to the Citizens Advice Bureau. The government says you need a minimum of £73 per person to live a week (seperate to housing). You should not be having that much deducted from the UC. Its good you have your own house and mortgage though - sure you have to pay it from the UC - I have to pay my mortgage of £100 from my UC of £325 (but its better then getting a loan to pay your mortgage, that is just super stressful, if I did that I would never get well, the anxiety and ocd of it all would drive me insane) but you are in a better position then lots of renters who face insecurity, evictions, 50 people fighting over one rental flat, and rents that the housing benefit wont cover. Also do either of you have any old occupational pensions you have long since forgotten about.......like if one of you worked at the NHS or a bank or something and paid into it, even for a few years. They say that there are tens of thousands of peopel in the UK who have small occupational pensions they forgot about. Even if it pays £1000 a year. If you are in a wheel chair you should be able to get PIP. If you need someone to prepare your food for you, help you in and out of the bath, you should be getting PIP.

This is awful. I just wish that everyone in the UK who defrauds the benefits and tax systems would understand that they are directly stealing from people like this who need as much help as they can get. Obviously, many of the thieves who feign illness, use a relatives mobility car, disabled parking badges, claim to have been abused in order to submit applications for cash compensation, etc just don't care, but if we didn't have to pay out billions to fraudsters then people like this would be able to receive more.

Benefit fraud is not widespread. Fact. There is £10 billion of unclaimed benefits each year that people are entitled to but is not claimed due to not knowing this and/ or not being able to navigate the system. Don't forget people. Michelle Mone stole millions of GBP to fund her yacht. The Tories promised unfunded tax cuts to the 1% causing a mortgage crisis, forcing BoE to print more money, when money is printed in this way, only those poor suffer because the cost of everything goes up, while the rich don't notice much because they have multiple incomes from investments.
