Universal Holsters: Phlster Floodlight & Blackhawk Omnivore

A comparison of two universal holster options, the Phlster Floodlight (OWB version) and the Blackhawk Omnivore. Both of these will theoretically fit any gun that can mount a Streamlight TLR-1. Both holsters are available for the Surefire X300 as well.
If at all possible I would caution against universal holsters. You will be much better suited by one good gun and one good holster, and if your handgun of choice is too hipster to fit any commercially available holsters then it's probably time to take it out of rotation.

I have my omnivore solely for when I first get a new pistol. If I decide I really like the pistol then I pony up for a matching Safariland. I have used the omnivore in day long courses working around barricades and off the ground and I haven’t had an issue with anything getting in the trigger guard yet, but it is a less sealed system.
@JimYeats
@JimYeats Год назад
I think the reason you have the Omnivore still is the main reason it exists. Oddball guns and range use/testing. The omnivore is easily modified though. Add a little polymer panel that extends over the trigger area as needed. Couple of small rivets or holster screws. For $35 bucks its a good option at the very least.

I have a USP45, with the HK parts match weight, and mount a TRL1 onto the weight. I asked around for holsters for it, and every answer that I got was just to make a holster for the HK alone, would require the molds and tooling of $600 for an initial investment, on top of material and time to equal out to an additional $250 for the holster. Instead of spending $850 on a holster, I went out, got an omnivore, cut the hood, drilled and set my own tension screws, and the USP fits into it perfectly, with level two retention on a thumb release, and I only spent 28 bucks on a used omnivore and six bucks on a various set of screws until I got the tension system I want to. Honestly going out to get custom holsters for certain guns is just as expensive as getting the gun, because a lot of custom kydex holster makers, do not want to spend the initial investment on the molds and kit for a gun not everybody has.
@hellcatdave1
@hellcatdave1 3 года назад
There is no reason a DIY holster should cost you that much. Phlster (Phily EDC) has plenty of tutorials on getting started. That quote is ridiculous. And most good holster makers would only need you to supply a dummy or your real firearm.
@ACWells-vi3re
@ACWells-vi3re 3 года назад
@@hellcatdave1 I totally agree with you, however that's me trying to get some type of retention holster. I could probably get a basic kydex waffle holster with minimal to no retention for anywhere between 30 to 60 bucks. However I require something that has retention. That's why I went that far with making my own rig. And let's not even talk about trying to get something in leather. A snazzy, cheap leather holster with a snap retention isn't that expensive, however something that is actual level two retention that does not involve a strap is insanely expensive.

The retention on the Floodlight is adjusted by how tight the screws with the rubber spacers are made. If you want more retention make sure to crank it down. I think friction retention OWB are pretty pointless though. The Floodlight IWB is definitely better designed and much more functional, a must have EDC.

Can confirm USP works better with IWB, and using extra spacers can be made to work in the OWB, however neither fits well as the adapter needed to mount the light adds too much height to the gun and pushes the holster out making it way fatter than it should be.

This reminds me of your battle belt video where you mention that the only reason you'd really need a quick-change holster system is if you're a RU-vidr reviewing a bunch of different pistols. I bought an Omnivore because I my proper holster for my pistol, a Steyr L9A1, wasn't going to arrive on time for a range event. So basically for exactly the reasons you state. Basic range use when you have some strange pistol or a pistol you are just trying for a little while. It's massive and clunky, but it did alright for the weekend I needed it for. Compared to a proper fitted Kydex holster, it's bulky garbage.

Been using my floodlight at the 3 o clock with my SS War Poet with RMR, TLR1HL, and comp for about 8 months now. I do wish it adjusted a little tighter, but it's not a deal breaker with this particular combo. I carry guns with lights, so a "universal-ish" holster is great. It's been hard to find a good retention holster with light bearing for my CZ P07, so I got the blackhawk Omnivore a year ago. I have some gripes with it, but it's better than having to use a fabric universal holster. The lack of trigger blockage is for sure a concern, but my biggest gripe is how easily you can get hung up in drawing the pistol if you try pulling before depressing the retention release button all the way. It will bind up and you wont get your gun out. When I go build a battle belt, I will likely be switching to the T5 Customs level II retention holsters for OWB. They can be ordered with Safariland hardware for easy setup.

I took a Uncle Mikes nylon full-size auto pistol holster and popped out the threading to make clearance for a crimson trace CMR-208, making sure to sew it up at the ends once I had enough room. It worked swimmingly, and with the buttoned retention strap you can run it as a IWB, by securing the strap to your pants' belt loop. It was only like $5 back in the day but today they're like almost $15. Still, a solid choice for such a bare-bones price.

I have an Omnivore and, I use it much in the same way, flat range fucking around. every gun i own with a TLR-1 fits. I threw a True North concepts safariland adapter on it, so its compatible with the QLS system. Never tried the phlster for pretty much the same reason you mentioned. If i'm gonna drop $120 on a holster, its gonna be for one thats actually made for the gun/light combo In my experience the best "universal" holsters are the safariland 578 pro fit series (even though they are not technically universal, you have some widths and lengths to choose from) they retain very well and have excellent protection on the trigger guard. biggest downside? no light bearing options as it locks on the front of the trigger guard.

There's been a lot of moaning about "exposed" trigger on holsters that accommodate a light, especially the wide body of a TLR-1. But not much inspection of what exactly about a holster that exposes any aspect of the trigger from oblique angles offers in terms of safety. If a holster is cut along where the trigger shot is, so the rear is fully visible and the trigger barely enters the holster, I would argue is actually the safest. As it means there is no holster obstruction that could possible result in an ND as the trigger never enters deep enough. And the only thing to worry about then is things entering the holster from oblique angles and then hooking on and pulling. I'm not saying I'm right, but I think we need to inspect the common causes of discharges caused by holster designs good and bad. And I've never heard / seen an incident caused by effectively something entering, hooking on and pulling. But plenty examples of holsters themselves and obstructions in the holster causing problems.

I think it depends on the pistol. If it's something without a safety, like a Glock, then it'd make sense to cover your trigger. Otherwise you should be fine with a grip safety, or thumb safety since the pistol shouldn't fire until you deactivate the safety first, in case you accidentally pull the trigger. It's just a thought, though.

Nevermind (kind of) I was able to pull it with my opposing index finger …. But only at a specific angle and with a lot of effort. .01% chance this is a safety hazard

@@SuperRichyrich11 I just had an omnivore dropped at my front door. There's 3/8" on either side of the trigger, it's kinda negligent. I would expect Safariland is better than this Blackhawk. This thing is going back tomorrow.

I just bought my first weapon light for a pistol so now I get to go through the nightmare of finding a holster that will fit the gun with the light attached. Luckily I have a common enough pistol, a G45, so it should be somewhat easy.

You could probably use the small and medium spacers to fit the HK, you might need longer screws though.

Holsters for light bering Beretta's are harder to find than you'd think. I managed to find a Safariland model that has no retention, but does have a locking hood, and it indexes on the slide, so it'll fit any light or none at all, but it was a pain to find it.

Will they work with lights?

So just try to add a large and small spacer at the same time-- and your USP will work.

safari land gls is probably the only universal holster i would use. its only like 50 bucks with lv 1 retention. cant put a light on but its covers all the important safety bases that id gladly carry a light separately for.

I'm rocking a 92X Centurion w/ TLR-1 in my Floodlight, and it works good. The retention sucks ass, but I'm willing to deal with that for an IWB holster.

Phlster Floodlight shines as a gamer holster though since WMLs are allowed now.

I have an AIWB phlster Floodlight and It is great for concealment so I can't really weigh in about it's OWB counterpart but I do have an omnivore for 2 gun matches. I would agree its a cheap holster, but I'm poor and it'll do for now until I can afford some better quality gear.

Can't forget the armadillo concealment xfer! Been rocking the OG kydex one for years iwb and it actually works well even for skinny people like myself. It can "technically" be OWB (the V2 specifically) but I wouldn't really trust it tbh although it would be cool with a suppressor in theory but I haven't ever tried it own let alone with a can. It is pretty legit tbh I know raven has the vanguard and it seems to be the same but I haven't had any experience with that. I just wish the xfer worked with DCC clips that's the biggest downfall imo.

I have the omnivore with the universal (no light) attachment and it completely covers the trigger guard. I guess it depends on the specific gun

I have a kydex. It keeps things from hitting the bang switch; that's really all I wanted. It stays in my bag. I don't want to open carry and I don't feel like CCW'ing a G17L

Since the philster floodlight uses spacers to adjust retention, you can go to holster smith or holster builder and get bigger ones. While your at it, I guess you can try to build your own custom holsters.

Did that for a own for my Springfield EMP, shits cash. For 40ish bucks I had a semi custom owb holster made for me that's pretty solid. Just wish they did safariland hole spacing on their owb's. Just tick the boxes asking them to finish it, and order your belt loops.

does the holster give the gun some play room, as in not rub the pistol and leave wear marks?

I have the omnivore because I've struggled to find light bearing paddle holsters for competition, it's not very good and required work to even be functional
@ghosttheoremproductions5469

For less than the cost of those holsters you can set yourself up to make custom kydex holsters to fit whatever you need. You can't easily make belt/molle/vest/etc attachments but those are easy to buy and add. It takes some trial and error but kydex sheets are pretty cheap.

As someone who was both the IWB and OWB Floodlights: if you want more retention from the pHlster, make it tighter. It's pretty simple. That ending was gold. It's what I want to do (and sometimes DO do) every time I see someone open carrying.
@brandont65

Keep in mind that open carry may not be the ONLY carry. It's not smart. Plus my wife carries concealed, that would just be a bad day
