At the very end Andrew talks about. ... "what if I could pray that everyone would be saved?" Or us as Christians, praying in faith that all might be saved. But then it sort of hit me… Someone greater, much greater than me has already prayed this prayer! Jesus prayed that all would come to know Him, and we know that He IS the savior of the World.

I think people need to consider what eternity means compared to the 80 or so years we have here on earth if we are lucky. I'm paraphrasing another comment I saw that really hit home about how disgusting a doctrine eternal torment really is. After 600 billion years of being endlessly tortured, what would be left of the individual who died at 80 years old? Would he even remember what "non-suffering" was? It would be like punishing a baby for the rest of their life because you didn't like their first breath. Punishment for eternity, with no hope of redemption and no possible way out is the most evil thing I can possibly imagine. If I was given the option where I could live forever in heaven, but others would be tortured in hell forever, or everybody just dies when they die, I would give up eternity in a heartbeat, to save my fellow man from such a fate. I'm just not that selfish.

Amen my beloved.... I shared the below extract with another thread further up....when the question was asked why Jesus spoke so much about forms of judgement [wheat/tares, sheep/goats, wise/foolish virgins etc] In essence I believe Jesus is giving you the key for this age....for the age to come is His to restore.... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Greetings brother - I lean toward all those verses speaking about.... good v evil light v darkness life v death spirit v flesh inner man v outer man... otherwise when we look at Matt 7:13-14 and we do not take this as prescriptive propositional text [teaching for this life/age....] then the vast majority [>90% will be doomed]....that's no saviour... For instance consider the wheat and tares.... [Mat 13:24-25 NKJV] 24 Another parable He put forth to them, saying: **"The kingdom of heaven** is like a man who sowed good seed in his field; 25 "but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way. All of scripture is spiritual - the Kingdom of God is everywhere and always, we enter by the narrow gate when we believe and forsake all confidence in ourselves and instead believe in His unconditional love....we are one with Him and in Him - God who is all in all, you need only believe to receive blessing. A day is a thousand years to God...even if you live to 100 you will be like 2.5 hours old to God....a new born infant - this is how God sees us and how He asks us to see each other through His eyes.... Be perfect like our father in Heaven....your will be done Father here on earth as it is in Heaven - Everlasting Life.... Blessings my beloved to you and all whom you love....

Universalism was condemned at the Fifth Ecumenical Council as Heresy. That does not mean all people might not be saved. It could be a real possibility BUT to definitively say that all WILL be saved is Heresy and is damnable if one continues to believe it.
@christianuniversalist
@christianuniversalist 2 года назад
@@Dandymancan incorrect. You’re confused about the 5th EC. So the Fifth Ecumenical Council condemned Origen, right? No and yes. No, in that it did not directly anathematize him. As St Gregory the Great would later observe, the general synod only anathematized one person-Theodore of Mopsuestia. Yes, in that Origen is named alongside the heretics denounced in canon 11. The canon does not specify which of Origen’s teachings are condemned, nor do the acts record any discussion of them by the council fathers. Origen is simply included among the anathematized. This is where things get tricky. The others in the list were denounced, directly or indirectly, by previous ecumenical councils and their heresies were well known; but those councils had never condemned Origen. Which teachings of Origen, therefore, did the bishops of the Fifth Council believe to be antithetical to the apostolic faith and to which synod or synods were they appealing? We do not know-neither the canons nor the acts of the council tell us. This point needs to be stressed. We may not assume that because the council fathers condemned Origen by name they specifically intended to condemn his teaching on apokatastasis. The establishment of conciliar dogma requires more than guesswork and conjectural inference.

It's not enough to be Christian; you have to decide which denominational sect to be a part of so you can bicker constantly with your other Christian "brothers" over minutia. Sad, I'm so over it. I had the same conviction as Andrew in this. I was a hopeful universalist, so I was a praying universalist, and I saw myself following in the practice of Moses who interceeded on behalf of Israel. I knew what I was asking for was something that only God could do but I knew as a good and loving God He would consider my request as His child. In the end I would submit to Him regardless of the outcome because He promises me that Heaven will be a place with no more pain, no more sorrow, no more death, and that every tear would be wiped from our eyes. I didn't understand how God could do this and still condemn many of His created imago dei, but I trusted Him. This is the encouragement that I would give anyone struggling with this belief. In the end it is all about trusting God. Whether you trust God as a Calvanist, Annihilationist, Arminian, or anything else, as long as that leads you to practical obedience to God and turns you away from all sins, including hidden, then keep with it. I know that I had to be given time for my heart to be softened by the Lord through His revelation of Universal Reconciliation in the scriptures and in my life. The worst thing we can do as believers is to be divided by resentment towards one another due to each other's weakness of faith. Whether you perceive my faith as weak for being an Evangelical Universalist, or I consider your faith weak for being anything else, in the end we are supposed to not harbor such resentments in our hearts but instead choose to serve one another in patience, peace, kindness, gentleness, self-control, considering one another as greater than ourselves. May God bless and keep you, may His face shine upon you, and may He grant you His peace. Amen :)

He did great. I still would love to see Brad Jersak and/or Robin Parry. On a separate note, it would have been cool if he mentioned 1) the connection between the "rivers" from the throne of God in Daniel 7 compared to Revelation. There's one river that is BOTH a river of life and a river of fire. (Rivers run into lakes...lake of fire...seems intentional.) 2) along those same lines, Paul says that Christ has his 1000 year kingdom until death is no more, until the gates of hades are no more, and then he hands the kingdom to the Father. If the lake of fire is second death, ECT cannot be true. Only annihilationism or universalism. - Jesse

As an annihilationist, thanks for presenting the fire and river info clearly. I find it one of the hardest to express in a way that someone new to the discussion will get it. Another point to look into is that smoke and fire that "rise forever" in prophecy can be immediately followed by wild animals and plants occupying the area,(Isaiah 34:8-15) so "eternal/forever"l is possibly better translated as unquenchable, as in "until it consumed everything it's supposed to"... This would apply in ETC and eschatology discussions. Also, in Isa.34:9, I noticed double checking the reference that water and fire are connected again, just as you said. I'll have to look into how often this occurs that I haven't noticed before!

Christians have been taught a separation doctrine of sin. If we are separated from God, how is it in him that live and breath and have our being that Paul preached to the Pagans (not Christians) in Athens? If Jesus is holding all things together in him and through him. How are we ever separated from God? Nothing can separate us from the love of God. We were only ever alienated from him in our Minds and thinking that we needed legalism to get back to him i.e. sacrifices, purity rituals, and temples. Jesus came to proclaim the Good news to the poor and broken hearted and to flip the institution religion on its head!

Cameron, thank you for these two interviews. As a universalist, I finally feel represented. Andrew did very well. That said, I would like to still recommend that you invite Robin Parry to dialogue with Chris Date. Keith Giles is a kind and intelligent man, but he just doesn’t have the expertise that Parry and Andrew have. I also want to beg your followers to read three of the books Andrew mentioned: The second edition of (2014) Talbott’s “The Inescapable Love of God” (but I advise *against* having Talbott on for a dialogue… his writing is so much better than his public speaking abilities, and I say that with all due respect and love towards Talbott, whom I appreciate) Reitan/Kronen’s 2011 “God’s Final Victory: a Comparative Philosophical Case for Universalism” The second edition of Robin Parry’s “The Evangelical Universalist”

Erik, I agree insofar as I think Parry has better arguments. But I think Date is within the same intellectual league; he’s just badly mistaken and sort of glued to his denial of universalism. I have to make a better case for an argument for universalism from the abhorrence of ECT because that's actually a pretty strong argument from my view. The argument goes like this. God is love, therefore nothing He does can go against this vital part of His own essence and nature. That doesn't mean we can't go through temporal sufferings, not at all. What is seen as completely terrible suffering, however horrible, can have totally moral and rational ends as far as the effects it has on the soul and so forth. Personally, I see everything in the world as having been made to point us to and bring us closer to God. We often resist this purpose and let things drive us away from God, but that's contrary to the purpose which God created them for. So, I see no problem with temporal suffering. What one can never morally justify, however, is eternal suffering. Of any kind, of any degree. If it's the eternal feeling of stubbing your toe, I don't think it's morally justifiable. Take Hitler. If the punishment is feeling like you stubbed your toe, there still has to be a temporal limit. Maybe it's a hundred trillion years, who knows? But eternal torment just doesn't accomplish anything. It goes beyond righting a wrong, and therefore doesn't have the moral value of righting a wrong. Without some moral or good value or meaning, where by definition suffering would serve no purpose, suffering can't be loving. To sum that up, suffering without meaning cannot ever be loving. It's just not. Now, to be fair now that I think about it, that's not really an argument for universalism. This argument could just as easily be used for annihiliationism, and maybe that's why Andrew doesn't like it. It at least steers you away from eternal conscious torment, which is an important step in solidifying universalism as a coherent Christian position.

"Which (view) seems the most likely to cultivate our fears?" Seems like a rhetorical admission that his view does not value the fear of the Lord, which as Proverbs tells us, is the beginning of wisdom. The argument that God is not sovereign in his aseity is nonsense(so Kinlaw is either a heretic or working off an esoteric definition to establish his so-called quandary). Sovereign means 'having the highest power or being completely independent'. God can be supreme by virtue of his true independence beyond the created order or supreme over Creation and sovereign in either case. His supremacy like any of the Divine Attributes that can be descriptive of the Godhead is not dependent upon Creation. To put it another way God's sovereignty simply means there can be no being higher than himself in authority or power.

Amen brother, Pray for all - our flesh resists the Spirit and it is the Spirit that gives life... We are called to die to self [flesh] not to avoid sinning in the flesh but to stop resisting the Father's will - EVERLASTING LIFE. The bonus is that in this age you are blessed incredibly as you live according to the Spirit and believe on Him for love in all and for all... It is the ultimate destination for all by the power of the Spirit - until then let us have compassion, for i too once resisted with disgust the idea of "universal salvation". Luke 13:22 And he went through the cities and villages, teaching, and journeying toward Jerusalem. 23Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them, 24Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able. 25When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are: 26Then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets. 27But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity. 28There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out. 29And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God. 30And, behold, there are last which shall be first, and there are first which shall be last. That's Jesus speaking and I'm positive He knows what He's talking about. I don't want this and I'm sure Jesus does not want this, but yet Jesus said it's so.

Greetings my beloved - yes but what is He talking about... Rightly divide the word... He also said.... [Luk 18:24-30 NKJV] 24 And when Jesus saw that he became very sorrowful, He said, "How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God! 25 "For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." 26 And those who heard it said, "Who then can be saved?" 27 But He said, "The things which are impossible with men are possible with God." 28 Then Peter said, "See, we have left all and followed You." 29 So He said to them, "Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or parents or brothers or wife or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30 "who shall not receive many times more in this present time, and in the age to come eternal life." Clearly distinguishing between the ages...v29 & 30... He also spoke about the same thing in John 11.... [Jhn 11:25-26 NKJV] 25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. 26 ***"AND*** whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?" Is Jesus repeating, clarifying or distinguishing....the word AND is a conjunction between two nouns...two states....two types.... And then of course He also says... [Jhn 12:31-32 NKJV] 31 "Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. 32 "And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all [peoples] to Myself." Now if we read about the narrow gate in Matt 7 [just like Luke's Gospel] you will either read it as prophetic [thus >90% in my view are gone] or you will read it as propositional and prescriptive - how to live in this age so you can receive blessing in this age...the law of love.... Well I believe the entire sermon is a propositional invitation of how to live in this age [in this flesh] - the Kingdom of God is now and everywhere and always.... And then of course we have Paul citing Isaiah when writing to the fellowships in Rome and Philipi about every knee bowing and confessing to the glory of God.... He wont lose one - its not who He is... And for context - to help us understand why we struggle to see as He does.... A day to the Lord is as 1,000 years.... So our average 80 year lives are like a 2 hours old baby to Him - blameless and precious in His eyes.... He wont cast one out.... Blessings to you and yours my friend....

Why would someone look at the philosophical case for a theological position.....? What Scripture teaches us, what Jesus is directly quoted saying, is that the sheep will be on the right and goats on the left. That there will be the weeping and gnashing of teeth. That he will judge righteously on the "Day of the Lord". The arguments presented here in this video seem erroneous considering what we have in Scripture, which should inform us about our philosophical positions.... Also, Mr. Hronich is continuously appealing to love and that "God is love"......My guy, is it loving to excuse sin and to not exercise righteous justice? Because for God to not exercise his righteous and perfect justice would be entirely unloving. This isn't about God saving some and not others...we need to ask the question of why God would save any of us considering how egregious our sins are before and against a holy God. You brought up the analogy of having medicine and only giving it to some children and not others. I don't see how that analogy applies here at all! This is about sin and justice, not the sick in need of medicine. What we need is to become righteous, and since we can't do that on our own, we are in need of God's righteousness to be imputed to us (2nd Corinthians 5:21).

The Gospel: Plain and Simple “But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.” - 2 Corithians 11:3 Ask someone today if they are saved and you will most likely hear responses like these: “I have accepted Jesus into my heart.” Or “I have made him Lord of my life.” “I’ve been baptized.” “I said a prayer.” Sounds all good and churchy don’t it; but it is difficult to de-termine whether or not a person actually knows the gospel that saves them. These use￾less phrases don’t describe a thing about what the gospel is and has left a devastating effect of people not knowing what it is that they are saved from nor how they are saved; which leaves a more serious effect of people ques￾tioning their salvation. Let’s not muddy the simplicity of salva￾tion that is in Christ with vague church sounding phrases that do not communicate anything. But rather present God’s word with clarity and assuredness. So here is the gospel: plain and simple. Sin was passed upon all men by one man Adam, and death is a consequence of this sin (Rom 5:12). Mankind has an eternal destiny of condemnation and wrath - Hell - because of this sin (Rom 6:23). No matter what good works one might do we are still found sinners in the sight of our Creator God. And all un￾righteousness and those who follow get in￾dignation and wrath. We cannot be found righteous for by God’s law we are found sin￾ners (Rom 3:19-20). If we have broken even one law we are found guilty. It is for this reason of not being able to create our own righteousness and being born in a sinful flesh that we need a savior (Titus 3:5). Christ is that Savior, God manifested in the flesh, sinless, died in our place on a cross 2000 years ago. Taking upon him the wrath and judgement that was intended for us sin￾ners. And it is through his bloodshed, burial, and resurrection on our behalf that we are able to have peace with God and forgiveness of our sins (1 Cor 15:1-4, Col 3:14). This good news is unto all but only those that believe in it are made righteous in Christ (Romans 3:22). It is then after we have heard this good news of Christ’s righteousness available to us freely, that we are sealed with the Holy Spirit and we are now part of Christ’s body the church (Eph 1:13) There is nothing that we need to do, no good works that are required, and no bad works that can separate us from our new po￾sition in Christ (Romans 8:35-39). Faith and belief in this information from God’s word is the gospel. The gospel is not accepting Jesus into your heart. The gospel is not making him lord of your life, it is not saying a prayer and it is not being baptized with water. So next time someone asks you if you are saved. Give them the clear assured answer “Yes! And let me tell you why Find more free resources at: www.graceambassadors.com

And more importantly, we'd be saying Jesus and all of the inspired authors were wrong about hell and fearmongering for nothing. Once you realize the truth of universalism, there is no going back. You can't exactly put it back in the box once you realize the idioms and the original language used vs the English translation, etc. And I believe god wants some people to purposely dig deeper to find this treasure. It's hard to deny origins and beliefs of early church members closer to the source material in favor of some new modern interpretation and invention of the word hell to simplify the real names used prior. A lot of the language points to testing (translated as torment) and uses purification and testing of the purity of silver and gold as a metaphor for going through a saving process either during or after judgement (likely after). There is an elect group which get specific rewards and stations who are saved first upon Jesus' arrival, then everyone else is handled in layers. God is letting us use our free will to develop useful skills for his kingdom and "ears to hear." He then draws people to him who he feels are ready now. Everyone else may not be saved till after death. All will believe in Jesus, because at some point, it will be undeniable. The "wages of sin" being death is simply a statement in the Bible about what we would be due if it weren't for Jesus' salvation and had to rely on the law. If you're held to the law, theoretically, you would be permanently put to death with no recovery, but that is not what is going to happen because of Jesus. Jesus gets his victory over you one way or the other and he loses if one of us is not saved. Jesus does not lose.

It's not rocket science 🙄 Lots of people are speaking without really reading or doing any homework. So I'm not going to do it for you, but just mention that if you go to Luke you will find the very question at hand was asked 'directly' to Christ. ie. It was a good question because this person obviously was scared they weren't going to make it as Christ often talked in some sobering confronting language. 'Lord will then only a few be saved? Now this is surely the perfect time for Christ to set the record straight, so please go and read His answer . There is no mention of any one missing out, if so Christ would have said so if this was true. but the fact is 'He did not' the only conclusion you can come to is that the purpose of Hell only serves the Glory of Heaven.

And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried, and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’ But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. And besides all this, between us and you a great CHASM has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.’ And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father’s house- for I have five brothers-so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’ But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’”” Emphasis mine.

@christianuniversalist 2 года назад
@@OldThingsPassAway While the story of Lazarus and the rich man is referred to by some Christians as if it were an actual historical account of two men’s post-mortem fates, both the context and the content of the story indicate otherwise. When examined more closely, it is evident that both Jesus and Luke intended this story to be understood as a parable by their listeners/readers. This fact has been noted by a significant number of mainstream NT scholars both past and present. For example, Robert W. Yarbrough (an “evangelical” Christian and advocate of the traditional doctrine of an “intermediate conscious state” between death and resurrection) concedes in his essay, “Jesus on Hell,” that it is “widely accepted that this story is parabolic and not intended to furnish a detailed geography of hell.” He goes on to refer to the story as a “parable” in the same paragraph (Hell Under Fire, pg. 74). But what is a parable? Answer: The word “parable” is a transliteration of the Greek para bole’ (“cast beside”), and is essentially a short and simple tale based on familiar things meant to convey a more profound spiritual truth. As a parable, it is neither literal nor historical; as soon as we try to make a parable literal, it ceases to be a parable, and loses its intended purpose and meaning. Any objection that this story is not specifically called a parable is invalid, since only 11 of the 26 parables recorded in Luke’s gospel are actually named parables by Luke. But what about Christ’s use of a person’s name (“Lazarus”) in this sixth and final parable? Answer: There is no rule that says a parable can or cannot contain the mention of an identifiable person. A named character is simply not the test of a parable. Furthermore, the rich man is never identified by name, which should tell us that Jesus is not simply recalling an actual event with actual people. His use of the name “Lazarus” is not to provide a historical detail, but to convey something that is important to the message of the parable. If one seeks to understand this story literally, however, and as describing the actual historical experience of two people’s “disembodied souls” after death (though the word “soul” is not even used in this passage), one would have to admit that they can be “carried” by angels (though they are often spoken of as being “immaterial” in nature by those who believe in their existence); that they have eyes, bosoms, fingertips and tongues (and apparently nerves if they can experience a burning sensation); that, in spite of the “great gulf” that is said to be between them (evidently so wide that no one could cross it), Lazarus and the rich man were close enough to see and converse with each other; that Lazarus was literally in “Abraham’s bosom” (even though Abraham was said to be dead, buried and sleeping with his ancestors in the grave - Gen 15:15; 25:8). Furthermore, one must wonder whether it is even conceivable that our Heavenly Father would “reward” the righteous by confining them to a place where, for ages, they would have to see the agony, smell the smoke, and listen to the shrieks of condemned souls as they begged for relief while being burned in fire (though exactly how an immaterial soul can be burned with fire is a mystery). For those who have been made perfect in agape love, the very act of having to watch people writhe and moan in fiery torment without any hope of relief would itself be a punishment. Fortunately, since this is a parable, there is no need to interpret this passage as teaching that this has ever been, or ever will be, the case…
@christianuniversalist
@christianuniversalist 2 года назад
What is the context of the rich man and Lazarus parable? This parable is closely connected to the preceding parables Jesus told, beginning in chapter 15. There, Luke tells us the reason for these parables: “Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear him. And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying, ‘This man receives sinners and eats with them!’ So he told them this parable, saying…” (Luke 15:1-2) Jesus then proceeds to give them a series of parables. Each story pertains to the original situation in Luke 15:1-2, to which Jesus is responding. Given this context, it is likely that the parable of the rich man and Lazarus should be viewed in a similar manner. Now, being true to the nature of a parable, all of Christ’s parables were based on things with which his first-century Jewish audience would have been very familiar, and contained recognizable elements of first-century Jewish society, culture and beliefs. Though the “spiritual message” of the parable was hidden to those without eyes to see and ears to hear, it was, on the surface, a story to which his audience could immediately relate. This is a significant point to keep in mind when reading this parable. This means that Christ told the story of the rich man and Lazarus with the full understanding that his target audience (i.e., the Pharisees) would have been well acquainted with the details and imagery of the story. In other words, it was a story to which they could relate, with specific details they would understand and certain happenings with which they would be familiar. But this fact begs the question: How could they have been familiar with a story like this? How is it possible that they could relate the fantastic imagery and details of this story to something of which they were already knowledgeable? There is nothing in the Old Testament that speaks of Sheol (the Hebrew equivalent to Hades) as containing a place of conscious torment for the wicked, and a place of comfort for the righteous. There’s not a word in the books of the Law and Prophets about the grave having two compartments for good and bad people that are separated by an un-crossable gulf, or about angels whisking anyone off to a place called “Abraham’s Bosom” after they die.
@christianuniversalist
@christianuniversalist 2 года назад
In light of what the Hebrew Scriptures taught (and especially of what they’re silent), how could the Pharisees have been acquainted with the content of this unusual story told by Jesus? Jesus knew the Old Testament scriptures, and never strayed from them. Since he certainly didn’t get the content of the parable from anything in the Old Testament, did he just pull the content out of his head? Did he make it all up? Or did he perhaps reveal something to them that was completely new to their ears? No, the Pharisees knew what Jesus was talking about. They were very familiar with the imagery and subject matter. However, their knowledge was not based on anything in the inspired Scriptures. And that is precisely the reason why this fictional story proves their understanding of the afterlife as being unscriptural and of non-divine origin. The content of this story was based not on God’s inspired word, but was derived from extra-biblical sources and traditions that became part of the Jew’s religious tradition after their inspired Hebrew scriptures were completed.

Why would Jesus say about the right hand sheep, the left hand goats? How many ways does Jesus need to say it over and over to make it 100% clear that some go in to the furnace and are burned and some are gathered in to the barn? These people can not possibly be serious. I wonder why they don't just go get a different religion instead of making a cult and keeping a Bible around?

Not a Christian but interested in the philosophy on this. That verse could be interpreted as hyperbole for the regret (woe) one would feel when eventually receiving salvation. Such hyperbole/metaphor is common to the style and writing of the new testament. Eg. You must hate your parents compared to your love for, Jesus cursing the fig tree, etc. If you take everyone's words literally the bible is incoherent from a literary standpoint, and the way the gospels are written it is clear they employ a loose, frequently non literal style in dialogue, the order of events and the content of events.

As a former Christian, hell is Likely first hurdle that a Christian might ponder. For me, it’s the issue of time in hell that hit home. I like astronomy and placed the problem of hell into timeframes. The sun will become a red giant and I will be still in hell. The earth’s core will burn through all radioactive material and I will be still in hell. White dwarves will cool to black (universe is so young these don’t exist yet) and I will still be hell. The largest black holes will radiate to nothing and I will still be hell. The universe will expand to nothing and my time in hell has just begun. Universes will be born and die and I will still be in hell. So what did I do to deserves this? Not holding a belief merits this punishment?

I want to add more on hell aside from the infinite, timeless punishment. The punishment isn’t really because of sin. Some atheists behave worse than Christians yet some atheists behave better. Under Christianity sins are forgiven so sins alone are not the path to the jail cell. What sends a person for torture is a lack of belief. Accepting a belief is outside the control of a person. Evidence either merits acceptance or it doesn’t . I can’t force myself to believe in Bigfoot or that rocks have souls. I can’t force myself to believe prayers are effective when I know they are not. So people are sent to hell, forever, for the inability to accept a thought, a belief. They can’t think in a certain way thus are doomed. Hell is like a runaway version of Orwell’s 1984 thoughtcrimes. A simple thought or lack of a thought dooms a person .

I get wanting to have differing perspectives on your show... it is simply curious you are treating a theology that is clearly outside of Christian orthodoxy as a possibility for Christians to consider. I suppose that I am a hopeful universalist...because I have prayed that all would be saved. The trouble is that I am not God and universalism makes God a LIAR. Because God is not a LIAR and is the only GOOD he cannot stand sin in his presence. More specially we cannot exist in his presence. And sinners don't get unlimited mulligans after we die. I think Andrew is guilty of about 9 types of heresy. Andrew makes God out to be a LIAR. Andrew ignores that God is holy, holy, holy. Andrew has created a god of his own likeness and supposes that God Almighty can lie about a need for repentance. Andrew reminds me of the theologian in CS Lewis The Great Divorce that was in hell, but didn't even know it because he could need worship a Holy God that punished sinners. I pray that Andrew repents of this heresy, because there is such a greater judgement for teachers.
