It's very, very unlikely that the aftermath of the Milky Way - Andromeda collision will result in the new galaxy being such a beautiful disk like the one you got at the end. The result will most likely be an elliptical galaxy, like the first few you did. As they collide, they fling stars and gas everywhere and lots of stars are born in a short amount of time, and then they are flung around everywhere. Lots of supernovas are happening because lots of massive stars that die young are being made, and overall you have mass chaos. In the end, the disks are destroyed and their stars scattered absolutely everywhere, and you end up with a kind of ellipsoid like what you see here: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/d3/Abell_S740%2C_cropped_to_ESO_325-G004.jpg/1200px-Abell_S740%2C_cropped_to_ESO_325-G004.jpg But yes, it is super unlikely that the sun will collide with anything. Life on Earth could be threatened in a number of ways though. First, the Sun might get flung towards the center of the galaxy where there is too much ultraviolet radiation for life on Earth to be comfortable. Second, a passing star, while unlikely to collide with the sun, is still very likely to disrupt Oort cloud objects and cause a bombardment of comets throughout the solar system. Third, there will be a lot of star formation happening, and some of those stars will be very massive and become supernovas withing a few million years, so there is a high probability of a supernova in the danger zone. The best outcome for the Earth would for the sun to be flung into the outer reaches of the new galaxy where things are relatively calm. Plus, imagine the view if we got flung from the galaxy. Life on Earth would be fine if it were flung from the galaxy since the Sun is the source of heat for it, and as long as it is still there, Earth will be fine far away from the galactic center, although it would make interstellar travel a pain (granted, we will probably have that long figured out by then).

We might not depend on our black hole... But if we're ever to survive our star we'll have to be able to actually *leave* it... And that'll be hard if *it* leaves behind pretty much every likely candidate of colonization back in the new galaxy as it flies out into space... Basically the long term survival of human kind *depends* on being within a galaxy with fresh stars and planets where we can move once our old ones (including whatever we go to after Sol) dies.

@Anton, you made an error (time 11:33) when computing the Andromeda black hole mass - instead of making it 23 times bigger, you made it 2.3 times bigger, should add an extra zero there.
@MentalParadox
@MentalParadox 6 лет назад
Guys, come on. There is no 'battle'. No galaxy will 'win'. You're thinking of this in primitive human terms. The black holes will simply merge, becoming more massive, and new galaxy will simply have the stars of both Andromeda and the Milky Way. Almost none of the stars will physically 'collide'. You KNOW how much space there is between stars, right?

Sun won't become nova. Nova is happening with white dwarf. It may be called smaller type 1a supernova. But type 1a supernova destroys the white dwarf completely. Nova is just ignition of accumulated plasma on a surface of the white dwarf from other star. So it happens with binary stars. One is normal sequenced star or red giant and the other is white dwarf. White dwarf is sucking plasma from the other star on its surface. As more and more plasma is accumulating on white dwarf, the pressure of lower layer of this matter increases and thus the temperature as well and nuclear fusion starts. As the pressure and temperature increases even more, another nuclear fusion starts, during which the brightness of the white dwarf increases rapidly and drastically. And that is called Nova. It's not even an explosion and the white dwarf usually survives this event. Our Sun will just burn out hydrogen, the core will start shrinking and will increase pressure and temperature due to that and will start heating up the layers above the core, where is still hydrogen left. The fusion of these layers will start and since this fusion is much faster and much hotter, the brightness increases a lot, which causes the upper layers to expand. After this fusion stops, the layers above core will shrink and start to make pressure on the core. This pressure will make brightness high enough to blow away the upper layers of the Sun and creating nebula and white dwarf is left in the center. As for merging Milky way with Andromeda, there is not really high chance that Sun will crash into something during this event.

In my opinion the stars will collide with a much higher chance... with all those unpredictable changes of gravitational fields...
@armysunicorn9630
@armysunicorn9630 7 лет назад
YES! Not only that but there are so many stars- unimaginable numbers upon numbers in both of the galaxies that it is WAY more likely to at the very least slingshot or solar system to shite.
@BustasGirl1
@BustasGirl1 7 лет назад
No not really I mean small foreign bodies will be thrown towards is like it did early in the solar systems formation but that's why Saturn is around and anyways if us humans do survive by then we will almost certainly be at least a kardeshev 2 civilization
@Mandorle21
@Mandorle21 7 лет назад
Nope, almost no collision will occur. You have no idea how much space there is between stars. Of course their orbits around the center of the galaxy will be deviated, but nothing more. The only difference you would notice (if humans are still there, maybe on some other planet) is just that in the night sky you'll see more stars...

Eeeh... It seems more likely that most stars and most things will go through the galaxy merger without much effect. I mean, globular clusters might be highly disrupted, but stars, especially "lonely" ones like our Sun, will probably go completely unaffected. Space is big. Really big... and there's a LOT of space around us.

Anton, I hate to disagree, but according to every astrophysicist I ever talked to, the chance of our sun directly hitting another star is about 1 in 1 billion, & more likely, they would alter each other's course to due to gravitational effects. Also, once the galaxies combine, the suggested shape will be more of a flattened egg than anything.

For those wondering, The Sun will be also going through its Red Giant phase as well and will pretty much be a White Dwarf before the Milkdromeda even finishes forming. The Inner Planets will have been throughly roasted, so we won't have to worry.

The sun will do whats officially called a "type a" or "type 1" supernova. where it kind of falls in on itself, then like a rain drop hitting a pond, it kind of re-splashes back out from that collapse and all but the core will blow itself away. a "Type B" or "Type 2" supernova on the other hand, THAT is the big "Ka-BEEWWWWMMMMM" we all know and love

Its the distances, they're huge. Ridiculously huge... if you were outside our cluster of galaxies, you wouldn't see any of the other galaxies, it would literally be pitch black, not like what you see in hubbles deep field, because that's the telescope collecting lots of light over lots of time, a few photons here and there focused on a small area. With your human eyes, it would be a starless black nothingness, especially in the big void areas of the universe.

Andromeda is Greek for "mindful of her man" and Via Lactea is Latin for "milky way". I propose the name for the new galaxy should be Galatas, Greek for "milkman".

"Stars will collapse to each other" - Most probably they wont. Even though the galaxies themselves will collide, the distance between the starts and the other elements found in a galaxy is so big, they probably wont even come close to each other. Correct me if im wrong though. Im just watching youtube, in not a scientist.

The stars in the two galaxies are numerous and widely vary in size, however, the distance between the stars is far greater. The math says the chances of one star hitting another is virtually 0. When this takes place the galaxies will pass through each other a few time as the supermassive black holes go into a dance go back and forth and then merging into one larger supermassive black hole. Stars will be victims of this dance and some will be ejected out of the collision and will wander the voids between the galaxies. As all this happens the gasses in the galaxies will heat up collide and collapse that can create a starburst. When that happens if we happen to still be here they sky will look like it is on fire. The starburst will creat a massive amount of new star formation. This is a spectacular event and would be incredible to see. In the end both galaxies structures will be destroyed forming a new elliptical galaxy, no spiral arms, and Milkomeda will be born.
