Nobel laureate in Chemistry 2016 Bernard L. Feringa explains why he thinks universities should be playgrounds and how he thinks his students are smarter than he is in this interview from the Nobel Banquet 2016. Production: SVT
There is a bigger flaw in modern education: Fear-based motivation. Let me explain: Students are asked to get good grades from high school onwards. Not getting good grades is big trouble for them. So the only thing that motivates them is the fear of a bad grade. Not a good way to make students interested in the subject and they might start to very much dislike the subject as well. "Universities should be playgrounds": Well they are already playgrounds, just not the kind of playground you will like. But that is something for another topic.
Isn't that dependent on where in the world you look? From what I gathered, that sentiment seems enormous in India for example, but less so in The Netherlands.
